HALF PRICE Maasdam Cheese Wedges or Slices $9.49/kg at Woolworths (Save $9.50)

310

Maasdam is a traditional, semi-hard Dutch cheese made from cows milk. The most characteristic feature is its ‘eyes’ (holes) that make up most of the cheese. The cheese was created in 1984 as an alternative to more expensive Swiss Emmental cheese. It is a high-fat cheese with a minimum of 45% fat. Although similar to Emmental, the moisture content in Maasdam is more, making it suppler. Nearly 15% of Dutch cheese production is made up of Maasdam.

It ripens faster than other Dutch cheeses, being ready in four to 12 weeks. The outside shell of the cheese has smooth, waxed yellow or naturally polished rind similar to Gouda. Inside the pate is a semi-firm, pale yellow with big eyes. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, buttery, nutty taste with a fruity background. If eaten young, it tastes delectable with a sandwich or as a snack. Satiate your taste buds by melting the cheese on casseroles, soups or fondues.

Maasdam cheese has all of the traits of Leerdammer cheese except for the brand name, which resides exclusively with Le Groupe Bel. It pairs well with White Zinfandel, Lager, Pale Ale, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chianti.

I've learnt more about cheese in the 2 mins it took to read the above than in my entire 40 years! Well done on the blurb (unless it was shamelessly copied from woolies) :)

Trust me, Woolies wouldn't go to all that trouble.

Just a slight pity you got the decade wrong - was created in the 80s, not 90s. I clearly remember my mother being rather annoyed at a local deli for selling Maasdam as Emmental in the mid-late 80s, I left home in 1990.
        Nice work tho.

It's the bubbles of nothing that make it really something.

    • +1

Make sure they don't charge you for the holes by weight. ;)

  • Nice… my daughter loves this "holey-cheese". Tastes almost as nice as Jalsberg

Jarlsberg is fantastic in a roll or samwidge with turkey and cranberry sauce

      • Jarlsberg is still $10 per kg OFF at woolies, so $19.90/kg. Wife bought a few wedges.

Just had Rice cruskits with turkey, cranberry jam, Jarlsberg, avocado and ground pepper for lunch.

    • Maasdam is great for toasties too

Thanks for the education TA but i prefer my kraft singles plastic cheese.

(Lol fishing for neg votes :p)

    • I just buy the home brand singles. If you're going to eat processed cheese you may as well do so cheaply.

As i understand it this Masdam cheese is produced by the company Frico. They also provide cheaper cheeses such as the dutch smoked round cheese, edam wedges etc. http://english.frico-corporate.nl/frico-products?steID=2&cat…

In 1898 in flookamadookland six dairy factories formed the Foundation of Frisian Cooperative Dairy Export Association. A difficult period during the 1930s economic depression spurred The Association to re-brand and a change in name followed; Frico - a joining of Frisian and Cooperation.

Frisian cows being nice to each other should make for a satisfying cheese.

Do they speak English in Flookamadookland?

      • +1

They speak Frisian in Freisland, Despite it being the nothern part of Holland, where everybody else speaks Dutch, except the people far south down Maastricht way who tend to speak Flaams instead.

  • This cheese has gone from $7-8 kg when it first appeared here (last year) to $18 kg. Not $9 at my local Woolies (Tas are separate I think dating back to the Rolf Vos/Purity days maybe).
