This is streets ahead of the $140 packages at dealsdirect or similar.

  • +1

That is a really, REALLY good deal…

  • I have been looking at buying a guitar recently however i was just going to buy a starter kit acoustic for around 200-300$.. This deal is very tempting! Do you think i should go with this or stick to the acoustic… I am a complete beginner ..

    • +3

Well if you want to play Kumbuyah and other hippy classics, buy yourself a folk guitar….

Buy this. Its a decent choice.

      • Silly question.. But.. Can you plug headphones into the guitar or amp? My current living situation isn't to great for blasting my terrible learning attempts..

        • It says "Aux in Headphone out" for the amp.

        • Every practice amp I've ever seen has had a headphone jack, most likely you'll need to buy a 1/4 inch plug adapter though, I think they're about $3 or something, You can't plug headphones into a guitar directly.

    • -2

You will want an acoustic guitar, but you only need either to learn.
I would be inclined to recommend an acoustic to a learner, but this looks like a good deal…

      • So tempting!.. Why are you be inclined to recommend the acoustic?

        • I think it is ok to learn on either, Epiphone are a good brand, as you get better upgrade until you end up with a Gibson/Fender :)

        • +5

Mainly because I learned on one, as did every player I know!
An acoustic is ready to play any time to pick up and practice/noodle about.
It is a little more exacting - you need to be stronger in your left hand - so I can imagine it would be hard to pick up an acoustic for the first time after learning on an electric.
That said, the skills are the same.

        • Thanks for your replies guys.. Do you have an acoustic recommendations? Are the starter kits by the likes of Yamaha any good?

        • +2

I agree with what mskeggs said. I have seen people start with electric guitar and they did miss a lot on the basics of guitar but that is from my experience only.

As for acoustic recommendations, I cannot say anything. Probably best to search guitar forums. That's always a dilemma that beginners face. I would say start on a crappy guitar but that really depends on how you want your art to be.

Re starters kits… My first electric guitar was/is a Yamaha pacifica, one which I reckon is on the same level as the ones in the starter kits. It's a light guitar and not a bad guitar overall. If you are looking at getting an electric guitar, know which styles you wanna get into or you might be really disappointed. If you meant acoustic starter kits, all the entry level Yamaha acoustic guitars are good value for money. Then again, that is just my opinion.

        • Good points, but another consideration is that some people who start learning on a steel string acoustic guitar give up for these same reasons. While you do develop better technique, it's harder to learn as you need to build up the strength. Some people seem to find nylon string or light gauge electric guitar a bit easier to learn on, especially kids IMHO.

        • +1

There is no reason to learn on acoustic unless you enjoy acoustic music, if you buy an acoustic and want to play rock/metal, you're going to be bored very quickly and less inclined to practice. Electrics can be played to suit far more styles than an acoustic, so imo you're better off committing to a decent electric than 2 mediocre guitars.

There is also no reason to buy an acoustic because of 'thicker strings to strengthen you hand.' If you want to increase hand strength, then you can put higher gauge strings on your electric.

Brute strength is far less valuable than proper posture and technique which can be learned on either.

        • "Brute strength is far less valuable than proper posture and technique which can be learned on either."

Not on a Les Paul style guitar. There's a reason many people call the original solid and heavy Gibson Les Paul "the Back Breaker" ;)

But go with whatever guitar you feel like. The advantage with acoustic is you can play anywhere easily, and the transition time between switching to electric seems be less than vice versa, but choosing something that interests you and keeps you practising is the most important.

        • quote " if you buy an acoustic and want to play rock/metal, you're going to be bored very quickly and less inclined to practice."

I think you'll find a lot of successful rock guitarists, especially lead, have classical training and learned scales, modes etc on an acoustic guitar.

        • +2

Yamaha is a good brand also for all budgets. I've owned 4 Yamaha's (bass, 2 acoustics & electric) over the years and they're all great instruments.

Back on topic, this Epiphone pack is a very good deal.

        • I didn't say it wasn't possible/beneficial; Just that the average person learning as a hobby, (simple songs and open chords) would prefer to just learn the styles they enjoy.
If you're prepared to commit the time to incorporating theory and scales into your playing then you'll improve regardless of your instrument choice.

        • You want a solid timber guitar, not a plywood one like the Yamaha starter kits. I think that Cash Converters disposes of Australia's entire GDP in guitar form each year, they get so many bloody guitars that sometimes they let quite good ones go for a song.

Check the cross section of wood near the sound hole. If it is solid timber and the fretboard and pegs are in good nick, go for it.

Electric guitar is a very raw instrument and a lot of people find they need other instruments to back them up, all be it pre recorded. Acoustic gives such a full sound and stands on it's own much better. It really does depend on what sort of music you will be wanting to play but acoustic would get my vote in most cases.

      • You can get a nice electric-acoustic sounds with the right effect module.
Zoom, Pod etc have nice factory presets.

  • Omg. Very good deal.

  • Nice… though there's no room in my house for another guitar, (un)fortunately. The guitar by itself is on sale for $246.

  • +2

Nice! Grab this guitar and a copy of Rocksmith 2014 for your preferred platform and you'll be up and rocking in no time!

Look cheaply made but great deal at this price. Still does wonder in skilled hands. And here's an interesting video comparing Special II with a real vintage Gibson Les Paul (a $3000+ guitar).

swedish guitar nerd says eehhh not so good.. :P

    • +1

Epiphone have been making cheap guitars for decades, since $350 was the lowest price for a starter guitar. I imagine they are being killed by the Chinese no name imports, but these have reasonable quality control. I have seen quite a few in the flesh over the years, and they have all been quite serviceable. I can't say the same for the no names.

    • +1

      thanks for the link.
his review sounded pretty positive to me.
said it was cheap but over all not too bad 8.2/10.
      and thank you swedishguitarnerd :D

How the hell is Epiphone an Unknown brand??? They are owned by gibson since the late 50s (prior to which they were Gibson's no1 competitor) and have produced some absolutely epic guitars. They are best known for their signature archtop hollow body electrics (which asre still awesome), but also make cheaper versions of gibsonś best known models.

    • Like the ES 335 dot version of the Gibson model. One of the sweetest sounding electric guitars I've played.

  • op "At this price you can get an unknown brand "

I wouldn't call Epiphone an unknown brand. Even John Lennon in the late 60's with the Beatles played an Epiphone on some tracks.

Like mskeggs, I too have played a few over the years and considered them good.

    Fantastic deal.

    • +8

@mycosys @Frig I don't think rlkk is calling Epiphone an unknown brand — that would be a pretty ridiculous statement as you both point out — he/she is saying that at this price point you can get an unknown brand, but this Epiphone would be a much better option.

      • Fair enough. +

  • One question though… didn't Allans/Billy Hyde go bust a year or so ago?

    • +1

Yep I was thinking this too but pparently they got bought out by Gallin's at the last minute. Seems legit so they shouldn't do a runner with anyone's money.

      • Gallins Group only purchased the naming rights from ABH (at a fraction of what they actually offered for he whole company before it went under), not the complete business. They then took as many of the old properties over to keep the location etc and started again.

ABH, Gallins Guitars and the Musicians Pro Shop's are all owned by AMI who is the importer of Gibson and Epiphone guitars.

In any case, this is a good deal for a decent brand name guitar!

allansbillyhyde with a good deal? what is this madness?!?!

time for you ozbargainers to all get one and make use of them free guitar ebooks you've all been collecting!

  • +2

OK bought. Just yesterday my 7yo was saying he wanted to be a rock star when he grows up. He's a good singer, but I told him he needed to learn an instrument as well. He said electric guitar. Done. (I got it in sunburst as a tribute to my favourite guitarist Joey Santiago)

    • won't this be too big for a 7yo? My 8yo is also wanting to learn guitar and I hesitate to get him one due to size issue (and how fast he will outgrow one!)

      • All the more reason mate, all the more reason.

  • Thanks OP. Just bought one for my little guys birthday..

  • Just bought two.
    Fantastic.

why did i come to this page……………….. whyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

im in such a big dilemma right now………. i've got 2 acoustics, i dont NEED an electric.. but the price and FREE delivery is such a big 'buy it or regret when ur on the bed thinking' kinda deal…

Other sites are selling this pack for the same price. I don't think it's worth $549 as stated.
    zzounds.com/item—EPILPSPIIPPEB
    samedaymusic.com/product—EPILPSPIIPPEB
    americanmusical.com/Item—i-EPI-PPEGEGL1-LIST

    • +1

But those sites are all US$ aren't they?

    • Yeah, looks like US sites

      • My point is this isn't worth $550, Amazon has it for $150 aswell. Edit: Wait nevermind that's without the pack, sorry.

    • $549 is probably a stretch but this deal is a pretty good for Australian stock.

This is probably one of the best bang for your buck guitars around. Thought about picking up just the Guitar when I was in the USA for US$150 on Amazon.com (they won't ship it to Australia) but bringing it back would have just been a hassle.

Epiphone have a number of factories around the world with slightly varying quality control, didn't see where this one was coming from (probably China) so quality could be a little variable, but for $199?

Cheapest I'd previously seen (just the Guitar) selling in Australia was $199, with this deal you get the Amp and accessories too.

  • Fantastic deal. What better way to annoy the neighbours on Xmas Day?

    • learning to play a violin

      • Bagpipes. Trust me.

  • This is a pretty damned good deal. I started out on a crappy $200 guitar amp package 20 years ago (an Onyx strat copy) and this is miles ahead of that. Hell, I might buy this just for a backup.

As a heads up, if you walk into a music store and can't get a massive deal on a guitar, your are doing it wrong. I just picked up a standard Squier telecaster for my nephews first guitar. RRP something like $450. Without trying got the guitar, cables, strap, capo, bag and intonation/action set up for $430.

13 years ago, got my s/h Led Paul for $2500, down from $3500. Instrument prices be crazy.

    • Bought my electric from Venue Music 20 years ago over the phone. A Jackson, but got stolen a few years later :( anyway I just casually asked whether they can give a better price they instantly >10% off…

Just make me wonder how big the margin is from the music stores.

      • In Asia, as far as I know for guitar we've got 27% margin from distributor.

  • Just put in an order, damn you OP!

For those who ordered, was your delivery fee also "TBA"? If I'm not mistaken, it seems as though this item is too bulky to qualify for the free shipping (I'm definitely hoping this isn't the case though).

  • +2

I highly recommend Rocksmith 2014. It has changed my life.
I just bought the game bundle with the guitar included, great value. Just play through PC and have no need for an amp.

    • Yeah I bought it when it came out on PC and grabbed an Ari STG (in candy apple red - it was the only left handed guitar I could readily grab).

Since then I've sunk nearly 50 hours into it and am a point where I can play a good number of songs at nearly 100%. Easily my favourite gaming purchase in forever!

      • 66 hours for me!

  • +1

Great value and shows what Chinese manufacturers can do - for comparison I bought a package (no tuner tho) from local brisbane Guitar Brothers a GT stratocaster style and Marshall 10 watter for $299. The amp is a howler and the GT is an A grade copy of a Fender 62 reissue complete with whammy bar. Built quite well and plays definitely well enough for learner to moderate. Here's the link if you are local and fancy spending $100 more + for compare http://guitarbrothers.shop033.com/p/8729936/electric-guitar-…

For a learner $199 is a great way to get started!

  • +1

I can't play guitar at all. But the price is so tempting… Hmm….

  • +1

Never played a guitar in my life, just bought this. Thanks OP

    • Same! Zero guitar experience, will grab a copy of rocksmith as well. At least, now I can say I own a Les Paul.

      • No. You own an epiphone Les Paul copy >_>

        • +1

Lol, oh, but but but that's what it says on the box.

  • Nice. Bought the epiphone les paul junior (guitar only) from these guys earlier this year for $89 which has been pretty great, though have to admit I haven't really used it much bar a fair few rocksmith sessions.

    • $89? I wish I could get one for that price! Guessing that was a sale?

The lowest I've seen is $169 at Harvey Norman

  • +1

    Well done, ozbargain.
    You win again.

  • Which colour looks good? I just cannot decide.

  • Thanks rlkk. I have always wanted to give it a go and this deal was something I couldn't refuse. Thanks buddy.

  • +2

Anyone know how long this deal will last for? Keen on getting it but don't want to rush into it and regret spending $200…

  • I do not think the postage is free. read the email confirmation , it says they will call us

    • The terms and conditions on their site state: "We include FREE FREIGHT for all orders over $45 but do not include tuning, delivery and transit insurance for acoustic pianos and large digital pianos. The delivery surcharge for the transit of pianos and large digital pianos will be shown separately at the checkout before orders are placed and the freight value will be displayed as “TBA”. In these instances you will be contacted by an Allans Billy Hyde representative within two (2) working days, providing you with a freight quotation. Until this quotation is agreed by you, you are under no obligation to continue with your order, and a full refund for any monies already paid for the ordered product will be given if you do not wish to continue with your order."

Free freight for all orders over $45, except acoustic pianos and large digital pianos. Doesn't say anything about not including guitars.

  • impulsed sunburst………. gg ozbargain.

    gg.

  • Kept getting errors on the website when attempting order, oh well, great deal nonetheless.

  • I have played since a kid and am now an old fart ( but would still really consider myself a hack )
I have a Maton acoustic, but sold my Gibson Les Paul Custom years ago to pay bills :(

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Jr ( single humbucker) a couple of years ago so i can muck around with my son.

For what it is , it is a surprisingly good guitar.

I can only imagine this plays as well, and sounds even better.

A great deal by my books….

    • +1

I too am of the 'OldusFartus' generation and have two Maton guitars ( That makes me twice as much a hack as you!) but I've never had an electric. My wife has now bought me this electric guitar for Christmas. I have saved her a lot of bother and heartache by helping her find a gift. Now I only have to find a way to get her to pay for it!

  • +1

I bought the guitar a while ago using a deal posted last year. How much would the stuff Asides from the guitar would normally cost?

  • I am a left hander and been meaning to learn guitar for a long time. Should I get this??

  • deal appears to be over. can't find it anywhere

  • Good find btw OP

  • Is the deal still going?

  • looks like the deal is finished. cant find anything on their website

  • Bugger, I was holding out until I had a good look around but it does seem to be gone. Looked to be a pretty awesome price too for what it was. Will have to keep looking around for my Rocksmith guitar now.

  • Just rang the Allans music and they said it's been Ozbargained!!
So no more stock left… missed out this time
    But Good find OP

    • Managed to get the order through on the link above.
      Thanks.

    • Me too.. cheers RKazza!

  • Saw it last night.

Finally managed to convince the missus (at that price) that we needed one.
    Just went to order and…
    Nooooo!

  • +1

Hey all I went and had a look around billy Hyde in Blackburn this morning and saw at least four of these packs at 199$.. Couldn't resist so I got it.. If you are kicking yourself for not getting it last night you still have time! Cheers guys

  • Guys I just cancelled an order, maybe they will relist one in stock.

  • I missed it - damn, but that may be a good thing as I've already got too many guitars (or so the Mrs. says …)

    Cheers

    Richard

  • Just got a call from them confirming my order (I had entered the wrong cc expiry date). Great service so far.

Now all we need is a deal on Rocksmith and we'll be… erm… rocking.

    • Does Rocksmith teach you how to play?

      • Rocksmith 2014 has many technique tutorials which are actually pretty suprisingly good from a video game - they cover often used techniques including palm muting, pinch harmonics; it's almost like a teacher for a fraction of the cost. I have friends who have resorted to using RS2014 to learn guitar and the progress made is considerably amazing after a couple of months.

In any case - it's a much better solution as compared to working out how to play the guitar from YouTube or books.
