  • Goodguys has it for 98$ + 2$ postage at ebay as well

    • In Australia, the convention is to place the dollar sign ($) to the left of the numerals.

  • What's good with this?

    • +1

Better screen resolution and build in light.

I have it over a year and very happy, although lately I didn't read it much.

      • Also, integration with pocket is amazing, not to mention ability to run android if you're a tinkerer

        • +5

          integration with pocket

… I know this is something I could google and find out it's an app or a service or something… but it really just reads like a marketing way of saying it fits in your pocket.

  • Price is much cheaper than at Bookworld. They are selling it for $159. Better grab one before they start whinging.

  • great price! I bought one at the start of the year from JB for $149.

  • Any eReaders I should choose over this? I have a Kobo Touch, but would like to upgrade to a lit screen.

    • Thanks OP. Just bought 2 after price matching OW. Great bargain @$93. I even bought one for myself. Shame they don't have the sleep covers. Oh well…merry Christmas to me….and to OP…and fellow OzBargainers.

    • +1

      not at this price

  • This or the Kindle Paperwhite?

    • +2

I like this since the only books you really need to convert are the ones from Amazon. You can buy books from basically everywhere else and just put them on it. Calibre is a must though.

    • +2

don't overlook the sony ereader. I've owned a kindle a kobo and the sony and the Sony is by far my fav. Although Kobo is probably second, with kindle lagging way further behind!

    • I would say Paperwhite 2, but you won't go wrong with this glo's price

    • Kobo Glo definitely
You cannot borrow ebooks from the local library with the paperwhite.

  • Wow - nearly bought one on Sunday for $149 - ran out of time shopping though. Thanks OP

  • OW have dropped the price, no more 5% off, crafty!

    • +1

I still get the 5% thanks to my discount card. ;)

That would be $93.10. But I bought Kindle already.

      • OW discount card? which card? or are you talking about ING 5% off paywave? come to think of it, 5% pricematch discount + 5% off with ING paywave=$88.20 huh?

        • +1

          Staff discount.

  • +1

Ooh this is a very good deal. I only bought the Kindle Paperwhite a few days ago on DJ and they haven't shipped it yet.

Had I known it would be this cheap, I would have waited. :(

    F##$%#$%#$KKK!!

    • +1

      right there with ya buddy

holding a shiny new (expensive) paperwhite 3G

edit: checking up on this the screen and the CPU of the kindle is way superior
(no expandable memory and you have to use calibre of whispernet for other stores books however)

TL;DR I'm alright with the paperwhite - no buyers remorse

      • Well they haven't even shipped mine yet, with no ETA.

I like the Kobo supporting more file types. There are things you can't do with mobi that you can with epub, so I'm not even sure a conversion will fix that.

      • Paperwhite is great but you cannot borrow ebooks from the local library

  • Price matched at JB HiFi Adelaide St Brisbane about an hour ago. Looked at the print of the GG page and said "no problem".
    Sticker price is $159.
    Thanks OP.

  • Bought 1. Thanks OP

  • Thanks op, now I know what I'm going to use my gg $40 games voucher on. ;-)

  • This looks like a good deal. People may wish to also consider the iriver story HD if there are any left. The Goodguys were selling them on clearance for $69. The iriver has great resolution like the kobo but no light. It's also great for just reading and not having to deal with Amazon's proprietary nonsense. So I guess it depends on how important a light is to you and whether you can find any left.

with a really good eBook app, I can read comfortably on a ~5" phone wherever I go.
if you have a tablet, ie https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/127261 you can easily use it as an eReader. why bother to have some many things? esp. when you travel??

    • +7

When reading for really long periods non backlit devices are easier on my eyes also the very long battery life on an ereader makes it preferable.

    • +1

I read on my iphone sometimes (e.g. on the train) but it pales in comparison to the experience of reading on the Kindle. E-ink is far superior for extended reading periods. Also, when traveling the lack of charging required is awesome (e.g. 2-4 weeks per charge).

    • +3

I read about a hundred books on my iPhone screen before I finally caved and bought a Kobo Mini a few weeks ago. The screen is much easier on the eyes - the difference is night and day. e-ink is much more comfortable for reading.

      • That and the iPhone's screen is a tiny substitute for a book.

  • can someone fix the link, it's not working.

    • Working fine here on chrome

  • Amazon has a one-day sale on the regular kindle for $49.00, might be a good alternative considering the primary function of an e-reader is to read!

    • Regular kindle is okay. But having a light is much better.
I had the K3 with the lighted cover.

I have the kindle paper white (japanese).

It is much more convenient with a light. The external cover light was okay - but the kindle light is much better and convenient.

I would get the Kobo instead of the Kindle Paperwhite, given that it's cheaper and its pretty easy to get epub books.

  • +1

I strongly recommend getting a reader with a back (front?) light. Whilst the argument 'but a book doesn't have a backlight blah blah blah' is true, its awesome not having to have an external light on to read. backlight is consistent, always available, never obnoxious. Read next to your sleeping partner without disturbing them, or on an airplane etc etc.
tl;dr - get a paperwhite or a glo, dont be suckered into something with no backlight.

  • +1

I have both the Kindle and the Kobo.

    My thoughts:

Kindle: much better CPU, faster response. Downside: can only buy from limited sites (range is good). Much easier interaction in terms of book downloads to a computer (eg: if you buy via computer rather than through the Kindle, its much less hassle to put the book onto the Kindle)

Kobo: slower and sometimes you need to wait a second for a response. Benefits: apart from wider range of sites, I can borrow Kobo books from my public library. Which I do frequently and I suspect will do far more often than physical books in a year or two (once the range is a bit wider). You have to deal with the Kobo computer interface and Adobe digital editions DRM.

So: if you only buy books, then the Kindle is better. If you can borrow books from your local (or school) library, then Kobo just for that reason, although the interface to get the book onto the Kobo takes a bit of hassle.

(I know you can convert or get pdf books etc if you have a Kindle but that adds steps)

For $98 the Kobo is a winner.

Just received an email from Kobo this offer should now be available from all retailers as Kobo have dropped $30 off the price now the official price is $99.95 available at JB, Collins, Big W, Bing lee, Angus & R, Bookworld, Hardley Normal

    • The current RRP is $159.99 so how is $30 off the RRP now $99.95?

      • -2

A very good question teach me for not reading the email thoroughly the $30 price drop is on the Kobo touch not glow. The touch has gone from 129.95 to 99.95 makes me wonder if The good guys have got there wires crossed and applied the new price to the wrong product.

  • JB Chatswood Chase also price matched + did a deal with a Nexus 10 (saw this deal on Lasoo and thought WTF?!)

Bing Lee didn't want to match however…

  • +1

    This deal is still on.

And since Officeworks have now raised there price to $146 again, you can now get it with the 5% price match for about 93$. Picked one up today for Xmas.

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Ere…

  • Expired. Too slow. Who would have expected the price to go UP on boxing day?

  • +1

Bought this and returned it. People who missed out shouldn't feel so bad imo. The screen is good, better than the original Kindle Paperwhite I would say. Performance is awful and the interface is frustrating. I would wait for the Kobo Aura HD to come down to a decent price, or pick up the latest Kindle PW. The sluggishness just killed it for me.
