Don't think it can be unlocked. But still a pretty good price for a mp3/media player at ~AUD $56 bucks.

Look at the description below. No longer works.

From what I have read, you currently can't unlock it yourself. I think if you stay with ATT for 6 month, then they can unlock it for you.

Personally, I am just getting it as a toy/media player.

      • A good device, but Unlocks are no longer possible. AT&T have stopped all unlocks (even third party's) … no one can unlock these devices.

        • +2

People said that about the PS3 and other such devices. What can be done digitally, can be undone digitally. :/

        • True. There is always hope that in the future unlocks will be made available again : )

Good device to use for apps and with wifi.

  • How does one ship from Amazon to Australia?

    • mmm.. enter your Australian address? They usually ship by iParcel which gets forward to Auspost for local delivery.

    • +2

You choose eglobal and you can see what items can be directly shipped to Australia. If the item can't be shipped to Australia directly, for a fee you can use a forwarding service such as Price USA.

I just received my Intel SSD from Amazon. Took around 2 weeks.

    • It's usually around 7-8 days most of the year (to Melbourne). I think it's taking slightly longer now due to the holiday season. I buy a lot of things from Amazon and only during Black Friday and holiday season I notice that the packages arrive on or after Amazon's shipping estimate date. Rest of the year the packages arrive 3-4 days before the estimate.

Usually a week for me to Sydney, too.

For my most recent order two weeks ago, there appeared to be a delay of a few days in shipping the items out and Amazon ending up upgrading the shipping to DHL for free (rather than the standard iParcel) without my prompting. :)

        • +3

Yeah Amazon's awesome. One of my ordered items dropped 30 bucks a week after I ordered and they refunded the difference. It takes a long time to build the kind of customer satisfaction and trust that Amazon currently has.

  • can this locked phone access app store through wifi to install apps?

    • Yes, it's only the network setting that can't be unlocked. All other functions over WiFi work fine.

      • +2

Then it could be used as a portable satnav. :)

  • How does Nokia Here Drive work on Nokia 520? Do you get to choose which country you want (e.g. Australia) or the phone you get already set the country for you?

    • +1

You just download the maps for the country you want. Australia maps is 200MB roughly.

      • You are referring to Nokia Here Drive+?

        • Have faith young padawan, that's what you asked, that's what he said, I can confirm it

        • My Lumia 520 that I bought from AT&T has HERE Drive, not Drive+, and I had to pay $20 to unlock countries outside of USA.

        • Same… so we don't get the AU Here Drive with the AT&T one.

  • you can get cashback with Fatwallet as well :)

    • Are you sure this is eligible? I might be mistaken, but Fatwallet seems to indicate only the following categories on Amazon have cashback at the moment: http://www.fatwallet.com/Amazon-coupons/

      Jewelry & Watches 6.0%
      Amazon Local 4.0%
      Clothing 4.0%
      Shoes 4.0%
      Luggage 4.0%
      Kitchen & Dining 2.0%

      • sorry for my overlook, this deal has no cashback from fatwallet. I saw this deal on fatwallet homepage as well.

  • I'm not in the market for a media player but couldn't you get something that isn't a phone with more storage? …

    • +1

It has a microSD slot so for an extra ~$55 or so, you can add on another 64GB.

  • +1

    Devil's advocate… If I wanted a phone based media player… I'd use my android. Saves spending $56 if I don't have to

    • +1

Good for Kids or other's that don't already have/want/need a smartphone

  • So it's just a prepaid phone?

    • +1

It's a locked phone. Which is different from prepaid, because prepaid phones can be unlocked for free eventually but this phone is locked for eternity, since you can't contact ATT.

I guess if you plan to go to the states then it'll work for you as a phone and navigation device, but it'll have limited uses in Australia.

      • Agreed. It is only worthwhile if you have no plan to use it as an actual day to day phone.

        For example:

        • You just want to play around with Phone 8
        • You want Nokia Here Drive navigation software

The main issue is that there is no third party currently willing and capable of unlocking this phone cheaply.

    • In a way yes. Except you can only use it with a at&t sim.

  • I am using HP veer from AT&T, and unlocked it with a code bought online, it is possible that this one can also be unlocked with a code?

    • Different type of lock, see above.

  • would this be a good device to use as dash cam?

  • This is perfect since I'm planning to head to America in a few months. I'll just buy the at&t prepaid sim to use it with this phone. Thanks garratt!

    • or you could just use your current phone and save 56…

      • Then you won't be able to take advantage of receiving free SMSes from back home. :)

  • Can someone show where it's been said that a 3rd party can't unlock this phone?

    • +2

No, because noone has said that it can be unlocked?

  • Sold out.

Fire sale because the 525 superseded this.

    • Still available at this price; you just need to select Amazon.com as the seller (in the seller list on the right) rather than a third party. Amazon's current status for this item is: "Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we'll deliver when available."

      • +1

Now seems to be sold out; Amazon's status is now: "This item is no longer available from the seller you selected." :)

  • dang, needed a phone for the us next year…

  • I think AT&T will unlock it for free after 6 months, right? You just need to activate the SIM that comes with it and after 6 months, fill in the unlock request form on AT&T website.

    • That's what it says on the AT&T unlock page. The full terms are here:
      https://www.att.com/deviceunlock

    • You just need to activate the SIM that comes with it and after 6 months

The problem is, you have to keep it active. A $10-$24 refill expires in 30 days, $25 to $99 expires in 90 days, and $100 or more in 1 year.

I'm not sure if the 60-day grace period is counted though.

  • what a nasty telco for subsidising $20 wholesale from Nokia on the least cost model they ban all unlocks, very very nasty. ACCC will not stand for that.

    • Their unlocking policy is bad, but I don't see our telcos selling a locked Lumia 520 for $39..
