GetFlix - Access Netflix and Hulu Legally - 17% Discount with FB Like

820

Here's an Aussie grown service, similar to Unblock-Us and Unotelly, which rather simply allows you to circumvent the geoblocking that USA services put in place to restrict their services to USA residents.

End result, once you follow the set up procedure (have your PC, router, or media playing device point to the Getflix DNS servers), you are able to fully utilise US and UK internet streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, BBC, ABC, ITV, etc). See here for the currently supported services:
http://www.getflix.com.au/services/overview

I recently switched from Unblock-Us to Getflix and to my mind there's been no difference at all, which is to say it's been working perfectly, and it's cheaper to boot at AUD $2.95 p/mth where as the others are about US $4.99 p/mth.

Tack on a simple FB like, and you earn a 17% discount for life. Pretty awesome all 'round really.

      Netflix:

      Internet Connection Speed Recommendations

Below are the internet speed requirements and recommendations for playing movies and TV shows on the Netflix website.
*Note: Internet speeds listed represent Download speeds.
0.5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for DVD quality
5.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
7.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for Super HD quality
12 Megabits per second – Recommended for 3D quality
      HD Video Quality
Movies and TV shows we have available in high definition will play in 720p or better with a fast enough internet connection. If you would like to view high definition titles whenever they are available, be sure to change your video quality setting to High on the Video Quality page.

There are 4 data usage settings to choose from:
Low (uses up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Medium (uses up to 0.7 GB per hour)
High (uses up to 1 GB per hour, up to 2.8 GB per hour if watching HD, or up to 4.7 GB per hour if watching 3D)
Auto (adjusts itself automatically to deliver the highest possible quality, based on your current internet connection speed)

    • +1

I didn’t actually answer your 720P question. Compared to say a 1.2-1.6GB MKV 720P, it is better.
I would say similar to a 2-2.5Gb 1080P MKV file. Broad terms I know, but I think you will know what I am saying.

      • Thanks for the useful info.

Won't be "legal" if the TPP gets passed through.

Good point, unfortunately banning geo-blocking would be the least of our problems with this agreement.

  • +1

Getflix is good. I get slight better netflix quality compared to unotelly

    • +2

The DNS configuration should have zero bearing on your connection quality.

    • +2

Getflix only redirects on authentication, after that you are connected directly with their servers. It won't give you a better or worse data rate than you what you already have.

  • +2

Probably stating the obvious for most folks, but if anyone has a good friend/family member with Foxtel you can always ask them to allow you to setup your device with Foxtel Go using their account. Each account allows up to three devices, so it may not be any impact to them.

I did this with my parent's account, and now running it on my HTPC. Aside from some intermittent application issues, it seems to be working pretty well.

    • With Netflix you can have streaming to two devices at once for $8 per month, or four devices for $12 per month.
If you have a friend that has Netflix, you can offer to piggyback on that.

    • Foxtel Go isn't on any set-top box or equivalents though is it? Hell, it's not even on 90% of Android mobile devices yet.

I can't see Foxtel making Go available for easy streaming to a TV as it'd so obviously lose them revenue based on their business model. As an option on a PC/iDevice it's a goodie but not viable for folk who want their telly on the big screen unless they want to make an HTPC and mess around with an interface that's a little clunky. Netflix can be used on an AppleTV or Chromecast so is a bit easier for non-techies. I pray for the day Foxtel Go appears on my Android devices but don't hold any hope out for being able to cast it to my TVs even when it is.

    • Yep, been doing that for months. Love it, free & legal

    tpb

    • +3

I just stopped using them for good.
The one service you don’t talk of as my primary now, and Netflix for convenience.
tpb do not have it all.
The misses wanted to see the TV show Medium again (glad I don’t have to watch it) and I could only find SD files with low supplies.
Netflix has them all in HD, and she can stream it easily into a bedroom.

I'm sorry snuke, I wanted to upvote this and instead accidentally minus'd it. Now it won't let me undo it.

        • +4

          I'll live.

      • -2

I'd rather tpb than have to pay a third party to bypass a streaming OD network that I have to pay on top of to get in my country.

There is a service on XBL called "Quickflix". I've been thinking about giving them a go for $14.99/month…anyone have any experience with them?

Edit: they do look to be a bit behind with what they have, but I don't know how quickly all this stuff would come out on Netflix anyway and older stuff doesn't bother me so terribly…

        • +1

I have used Quickflix for, wait for it, DVDs, remember them, but never trialled streaming outside of previews.
The app on PS3 crashed every time you exited it, I haven't bothered downloading it on PS4.

I remember that most of their shows topped out at 700mb, so far smaller file size and therefore quality than Netflix.
From a recent comparison review I read, Netflix had the best quality stream, ahead of Hulu and Amazon.

        • Okay…

          700mb for how long a film/episode?

Did you notice a difference on the amount offered/how quickly they offered it from it being aired/released?

        • Both, tv episode and move. The max file size I saw for a movie was 1GB.
This was over a year ago though.

No idea about releases, I never looked that closely.
I think they have Game of Thrones they day after US show it, and similar for other HBO shows, but that is a premium charge.

I am sure they have actual factual info on their website.

        • Well yeah, but it would be rose-tinted info.

I shall check out reviews - thanks for your help, snuke.

  • what regions are available on this?
brazil? sweden? canada? all these regions have great movies on them for netflix, i'll switch if it has good region switching…

    cheers,
    Ben

    • US & UK.

      • +2

Yeah I just signed up to the trial and noticed this. Unblock us offer 11 separate country configs. Probably not a big deal for most people but on occasion we have swapped from UK to Ireland to find a few different shows on netflix for instance. The price saving is nice though.

      • +2

According to their Facebook page they're adding Canada, Mexico and some Nordic regions soon

  • +1

I recently switched from Unblock-Us to Getflix and to my mind there's been no difference at all, which is to say it's been working perfectly, and it's cheaper to boot at AUD $2.95 p/mth where as the others are about US $4.99 p/mth.

Except for the fact they only support 2 regions when Unblock/Unotelly support all the Netflix regions. Might not seem like much but you'd be surprised how much different content is on all the different regions. That to me is worth the extra few $$ a month to make Netflix just that much better value for money.

    • From Getflix's january 2014 email update:

      "What's Next?
We'll be adding the Canada and Netherlands regions to our Netflix region switching option in the next week or so. We'll also start adding support for Amazon Prime, M-Go, Vudu and Redbox Instant."

      • +1

And that brings it to what, 4 out of 11?

With the amount of different content on different Netflix regions, saving ~$2 a month isn't worth it for me.

Once they bring in more regions, and have a handy mobile site like Unblock-US has (m.unblock-us.com), which is awesome for easily updating your IP address and region, then I'll think about switching over to them.

        • +1

No worries (I upvoted your comment), but it is worth it for me. I don't bother with region switching, I don't have the time to watch enough content to bother with it. So getflix saves me a couple of bucks a month for no loss of utility.

        • +1

That's true, using moreflicks.com helps when trying to find certain things so you can see what's on the other regions.

Plus changing it a few times a month stops it from being 'stale' in content.

The main reason I haven't changed from Unblock is due to their mobile site. It nasically acts like an app on my iPhone. I'd of gone to Unotelly if they actually offered the same thing, it seriously is so damn handy.

    • +1

Most VPNs cause massive delays or drops in download speed.
These simple DNS options can have no negative effect.

  • I'm such a pathetic pirate. Through this thread, I only just learned you can watch Netflix in Australia. PATHETIC. I'm going to hijack a dingy now to make up for it.

    • +2

I'm going to hijack a dingy now to make up for it.

Not necessary…IIRC Abbott's about to start giving them away! ;)

  • Are you able to switch regions with this service, like you can with UnoTelly? Like, switch from UK Netflix to US Netflix and so forth?

    • From their january 2014 email update:

      "What's Next?
We'll be adding the Canada and Netherlands regions to our Netflix region switching option in the next week or so. We'll also start adding support for Amazon Prime, M-Go, Vudu and Redbox Instant."

  • Unotelly.com and better than unblock-us and includes a free worldwide (any country) VPN too!

  • I am almost going to get netflix turned off on the basis that the DNS service I'm going to have to pay for soon will cost almost as much as the service itself(I use tunlr.net which will expire in just under a month).

Would anyone on this forum be up for helping me build our very own free DNS reroute service?

EDIT: http://tunnelto.us/ is free! and will be a nice replacement for tunlr.net when I've run out of my last free month. It's been a please tunlr.net and I truly appreciate what you've done but I won't be paying a cent.

    • +1

$12/year really isn't that much for what they are doing. Considering they refused donations while they were small I'm pretty sure they aren't looking to make a fortune. I personally will keep using the service.

      • I didn't realise the subscriptions were so cheap. I thought they would be the same price as unblock-us which charges $5 a month.

  • If you want to save money, buy a netflix 12 months giftcard. You can usually find sellers on ebay that sell them for $35-50 aud range. Which could save you more money than this deal. :)

    • +2

DON'T do that. Most of them are legitimate codes though bought with stolen credit card numbers.

      • What if, they steal my credit card, buy the gift card, then I buy it via eBay for less than I already purchased it for without my consent?

What if I had actually taken mind altering drugs to justify my lunacy?

        • +2

          Now my heads hurt

        • "What if, they steal my credit card, buy the gift card, then I buy it via eBay for less than I already purchased it for without my consent?"

Then you sure screwed them. Take that, stupid theeves!

        • +1

I bought a Hulu card from eBay. Worked fine, three weeks later an email from Hulu my account has been banned permenantly and they wanted to know where i got the voucher.

I emailed them, saying I bought from Ebay. No reply. ever.

what they do on eBay is get good feedback from someone who buys the cheap subscription, activates it, goes back on ebay going "yeah awesome seller, great feedback, netflix/hulu works awesome"

then a few weeks later the hammer comes down.

        • I bought mine from a seller who had 1000's of user feedback and the account was created in mid 2000, so I doubt they gonna risk their seller rating selling stolen cards. Of coarse if you buy from new sellers with little feedback you increase your risk of running into a dodgy seller. Plenty of people buy without ever a problem and the advice has been given out here in previous hulu/netflix deals.

        • A link to this seller would be greatly appreciated by all.

        • I don't know how to find sellers in my eBay summary beyond 60 days, is there a way?

Anyways quick search on eBay reveals this guy selling them
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Netflix-12-Month-Gift-Card-95-88-…

eBay I think is a pretty safe way to buy them, it would be unlikely I think if you buy from seller that has plenty of feedback with an account created years ago to be selling stolen ones. Of coarse their account could get hacked I suppose..

        • I save the purchase emails from ebay in a folder for future reference.

I saw that seller earlier and have it watching.

  • You could just use XMBC, and use OneChannel… It's 100% free, great movies and shows… I'm not the tech one in my house so can't tell you much more then that sorry. But it's great :)

  • I use Smarty DNS with Roku. Works Great…

I bought it using their New Year Special. $27 USD for full year.

  • +1

This might seem like a silly question but how do so many people use this with the rotten broadband speeds we get in Australia?? (I get 2 Mbps tops)

    • And I thought I had it bad getting 5 Mbps 2.5 km from exchange…

    • +1

Set your Netflix quality setting and your expectations to low.

    • Not sure where you are based. But I am in a Melbourne Suburb about 1.5 Km from exchange, and I regularly get

      • ~15 Mbps with wired connection
      • ~13 Mbps with wifi connection

      I use ADSL2+ from TPG

Here are my speed test results … http://www.speedtest.net/result/3230047517.png

    • Lots have crappy internet, lots have average, lots have great. Lots of lots.

  • Ive been using getflix since they first started, was it bit rough at first but after some awesome customer service i was up and running, cant recommend enough

This is NOT legal, even if I wish it was.

    • +1

So please point me to where it's illegal?

      • -2

it is illegal. this country signed the FTA with America and as such we got their ridiculous (profanity) laws.

there's also the TPP hanging its dirty greasy head around the corner.

breaching a companies T&C isnt illegal, but streaming copyright material in a country it isn't licensed definitely IS..

    • +3

"This is NOT legal, even if I wish it was."

It is not illegal. That means, yes, it is legal. Until tested in court, saying it's not legal is purely speculation.

    • +2

This is NOT legal, even if I wish it was.

I can see your future, down voted into oblivion.

  • Been using getflix for a while and highly recommend.
This deal has been around for a while

  • have been using getflix on their free trial for past few days. working great. i suspect my internet speed is the reason for shows to buffer occassionally.

Can anyone tell me which is better - hulu or netflix. I like watching the latest tv shows and movies.

  • Will changing my routers dns to getflix increase my game ping?

    • Sure, why not.

    • +1

      I have found no difference.

Edit, I just ran http://www.pingtest.net/, no difference really.
      I tested multiple times
It was 1-2ms worse for Ping, a 1-2ms worse for Jitter with Getflix DNS OFF for 3 tests, then back to the same result.

      • Thanks for this :)

  • +1

I just managed to get the 17% discount for a Google+ +1 by emailing Getflix. I don't use Facebook so that wasn't any use. Will subscribe once my trial ends.

    Looking good so far…

    • +1

      Nice thinking 99.
I don’t use FB either, but I have a fake account set up for reasons just like this.

  • I just signed up to try it, seems to be getting lower picture quality than I was getting on unblock US. My interweb speed sucks though, hurry up nbn!

  • i will still be sticking to hma vpn (http://hidemyass.com/vpn/r11726). The speed is decent and I have encryption. THe problem with DNS is that the you expose all the data to these guys. I dun wanna get hacked, but thats just me.

    • I found HMA to be appalling. Slow as hell, very unreliable getting a decent server.
      $50 not well spent.

  • +1

Works well… I watched my first episode from Netflix through it last night. 14 day free trial is good for validating that it works! And $2.49 ongoing fee once you've clicked 'like' on Facebook is good.
