I use one of these all the time and love it. Was getting wrist pain after using a standard mouse for 20+ years. The trackball mouse got rid of any pain.

      yup ditto story for me

took maybe a week to get used to using it and about 3 months before i stopped randomly grabbing it and trying to move it across my desk like it was a mouse wondering why my pointer wasnt moving…. old habits die hard.

well worth the ~$70 i paid for mine.

  • Some of the CAD guys use these at work; I cannot fathom how you can find them more accurate for precision pointing.

Yes they have more sensitivity and a greater range of motion but most people's thumbs are far less muscularly dextrous than their fingers and far less utilised for such intricate movements.

The three-button layout though should be adapted to non-trackball mice because it's quite useful and intuitive.

      I also use one…right now!
It also got rid of my wrist pain!

You just adjust the settings so you can move the pointer from side-to-side and up and down in a single thumb movement.
You can't accidentally bump the mouse and hence move the pointer.
I find it much more accurate and far quicker than a 'normal' mouse.

I switched to one of these a few years ago because of RSI. At first, I was not very accurate with it, and I just lowered the sensitivity. I increased it over time and now I am as accurate (probably more) than with a regular mouse. I use it on a high resolution monitor also, and it is much easier to move across the screen than with a regular mouse.

It is like anything else, it takes a little while to get used to, but not too long.

I also use this exact mouse at work and home.
While it is an excellent mouse, it will also stop people using your PC as they find it too hard to use the mouse. Win win if you ask me ;-)

    • thank god for CAD Snaps!

  • It is $44.42 AUD

Used a trackball for about 14 years now, and for some reason I have the same Microsoft trackball still working after 11 years of daily use.

  • Good price, i'm tempted!

  • Anyone play games with a trackball mouse? I'm in the market for a new mouse, and this has caught my interest. I also browse the Web and YouTube - a lot.

    • +2

I used to play fps like quake and rts like SC with a trackball, it was fantastic. None of that 'run out of mousing surface', enables you to do non-stop spin moves (ala The Death Blossom from The Last Starfighter) in fps, also scrolls around maps faster than standard mouse as you don't need to 'pick up mouse, place left, move mouse right'.

Bought one, will get back into it, thanks op.

Anyone play games with a trackball mouse?

yes. i call it tickle the mouse ball. smiles innocently

      • yup i game with mine as well. its a lot harder originally caus your so used to a mouse but after a while you get used to it and it ends up at least as good as you were with a mouse

        • So what was the point of switching? Unless you were prone to sore joints/cramps or something. I could see it being okay for casual/single-player gaming when you don't want to feel like you're strapped into a cockpit and super tense, good for casually moving around in a game like Sim City or something where there's no real need for laser accurate hand-eye coordination, but in a multiplayer FPS/RTS type scenario? I'm not sure I want to go through those first 900 deaths until my trackball skills are where they need to be.

        • So what was the point of switching?

joint problems/pain/probably rsi from 20-30 years of using mice. ive also been using ergo/bent keyboards since the mid 90's for the same reasons.

im not what you call a hardcore gamer but i do play fps/rts mostly as well. what my mate who talked me into getting one does is has a mouse for some stuff and the TB for the rest. hes early 20's and does programming and web stuff and finds the TB much better to use in most things but still likes to game with a mouse.

  • For $55 at my local ARC, I'd rather get it there at my own convenience and with a local warranty as well.
Also a tad bit upset at amazon at the moment, it took them a month to send out the v-moda headphones listed here a while ago.

I have 2 on my desk at the moment, 1 for my office pc and one for the laptop. Makes working on a train or in bed a breeze as you don't need a mouse friendly surface. Would great for a media center pc setup too as you can use it on your knee while on the couch. Great on a presentation lecturn as you dont wont hit your notes. Seriously the applications are endless.

Took a couple of hours to get used to it. Now I love them so much. Tempted to another as a spare, not that I have had the slightest problem with either. To clean the ball, the stick the back of a pencil or your little finger in the whole under the ball (base of the mouse) and the pops out. Wipe out any any dust and goopy build up (dont use a trackball while eating bbq shapes - ew!) and pop the ball back in. Your good to go. The battery lasts for ages too and its just a single AA. So get some LSD rechargeable batts from hobbyking that get posted here all the time.

Seriously, get one. Your wrist will thank you!

    • Any input lag issues with the wireless on the mouse? I avoid wireless mice in general, as I notice a huge difference in response latency, even with top of the line gaming mice.

      • +1

None, it is instant. If it has gone into 'low power mode' when you leave it for 10 minutes it might have a blink lag for the first fraction of a second, but in everyday use it is exactly as fast as wired one.

I use mine in video prod, gaming, graphic design, browsing, writing etc. Just so nice. With this and I run dragon naturally speaking if I do a lot of text entry, wrist pain is such a thing of the past.

        • None, it is instant.

i have also used cordless mice since the 90's… i have NEVER* experienced any lag… ever… but people complain about it constantly..

          maybe its a placebo effect?

*never apart from when they go into sleep when you havnt used them for a long time

  • tempted - ahhh bought!

    • I was looking at the product description which reads:"Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S."

I'm thinking of purchasing also. Did you get any emails saying the item can or cannot be shipped to AUS?

      • Nope - just ordered as per normal - except my BILLING address is set as US
Got confirmation email they are shipping to my NSW address

      • my order was just shipped. both AU billing and shipping address.

  • Is Kensington SlimBlade TrackBall (5 year warranty?) any better for FPS games such as buggy BF4:

    http://www.kensington.com/kensington/us/us/p/1444/K72327US/s…

My Steelseries Sensei mouse (AWESOME !!!) died from being dropped too much and I can't get the hang of the Saitek Cyborg MMO 7 (http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/mmo.htm) that I got to replace it (too awkward and heavy - even with tool removed from back).

    Please Help :)

    • I'm with you on the Saitek Cyborg. I've got the R.A.T 7, basically the same deal just with a few less thumb buttons and man it's hopeless. There's no arch in the shape of the mouse so my palm just kept sliding off the back and my fingers sprawl out way over where they should rest and unless you have the palm rest on the very last slider position (where it wobbles), it just doesn't fit my huge hands. The button pressure was also far too sensitive, I kept double-clicking inadvertently.

The swappable rests all suck apart from the default ones and the adjustable length/width is a gimmick.

Even the "Precision Aim" button under your thumb which drops the DPI down to whatever you need for as long as you hold it, it seemed like a really good idea, until you realise that in fast-paced FPSs you really don't have time for that. It also gets you too dependent on having an aid, and makes you use your fine motor control less.

This mouse is $45 at MSY. Yeah that's if you don't mind visiting an MSY store but you do get local warranty.

  • Question for you trackball aficionados.

Have you tried finger-mounted trackball mice (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-910-000806-Trackman-Marble-Mo…) or free-standing trackball mice (http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K72337US-Orbit-Trackball-Sc…), and are they preferable?

    • nope this is the only trackball ive tried, bought it on the recommendation of a mate.

but the thing i like about the thumb ball is that usually your thumb does little more than help hold the mouse on a regular mouse and these use your normal fingers for left and right clicking. feels more like im used to i guess.

  • Anyone received theirs yet?

  • mine arrived yesterday
