Sony Xperia Z Tablet 16GB Wi-Fi – $399 Click & Collect DSE, or + $2 Shipping TGG

230

Been fishing around for one of these for a while, waiting for the price to drop a little to fall within my profligately-challenged spending habits.

I missed out on the similarly priced offering from Shopping Express a little while ago, which included the $200 voucher thingy but not shipping.

Not entirely sure if this really constitutes a "bargain". It's also on sale at TGG for the same price (+$2 shipping on their ebay store).

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-SGP311A1B-Xperia-Z-10-1-16GB…

However, Kogan is showing it as $619 + shipping. $468 at Harvey Norman.

There are rumours of a new Xperia tablet in the works, so perhaps Sony is slowly lowering the price on this current model. Its specs seem certainly better than the more expensive Samsung Note 10.1, anyway.

  • You have delivered but it says available in store only.

    • Hmm good point. I've updated.

  • Thoughts on this as opposed to a nexus 10? Or even the Ipad Air 32gb (different price point, but happy to stretch).

    • Wouldn't recommend a nexus 10 atm because the new one is about to be released.

      • +2

It's been "about to be released" for a while now.

      • People have been saying the new nexus 10 is "about to be released" since September. But there's been no offical word one way or the other from google or any manufacturing partner. I would not use the phantom of a possible new nexus 10 release as justification for anything.

Top notch tablet. In my opinion, still one of the best android 10 inchers out there.

      Reasons :
      - Thinnest and lightest 10 incher tablet.
      - Dust and water proof.
      - Sony interface is a more mature and light look and is close to stock android, unlike Samsung etc with all their bloatware.
      - Solid screen, not the highest resolution at 1920x1200, but that's still over Full HD. Plus it uses Sony's Bravia engine, producing good colours.
      - In my opinion, it has the best build quality. Second only to the iPad. Almost every android tablet has a cheapy plastic feel to them.
      - Has an IR blaster (can control a load of different devices from TVs, stereo systems, to projectors as a universal remote), which has actually been very useful.

      • But most of all, the reason I went with the Sony over the Nexus (These were my 2 main choices), was expandable storage. Especially for a 10 inch tablet, where you have to take advantage of its media capabilities, the Nexus 10 with no Mirco SD card slot was the main factor for me.

Ipad is what you expect. Feels smooth and fast, top quality screen, top quality build quality, massive apps library, but of course its mostly up to the price and OS you want.

How is it for android updates? Sony has a delightful reputation of leaving users in the dust with firmware updates a lot earlier than other device oems.

        • +1

It was just updated from 4.1.2 to 4.3 at the end of December 2013 and still gradually rolling out this month (along with the other Xperia Z-related 2013 series devices). For future updates, it will likely be in the same boat as the other 2013 Z-related series.

Sony has made some major improvement in rolling out updates for their 2013 devices and shown support for the opensource community/AOSP.

Apple warranty is pretty good. My iPad 3 had an issue where no sound was coming from the built-in speaker. Apple replaced it - no questions asked. My iPad was 6 months out of warranty.

So if price is not an issue go for iPad.

      • Except for user experience. Its got nothing to do with price.
Not everyone enjoys being locked down by Apple or use iTunes.

Android/Windows gives users choices. Something which Apple thinks is limited to storage size options…

        • Don't get me wrong. I am an android person. The iPad is for my kid. If my samsung tablet were to break, I will be running pillar to post to get it fixed. With Apple there was no such issue.

  • are there even stores with any stock??

snapdragon S4 pro can run WP8 perfectly smooth but guess that may not run android 4.1 that smoothly cos android take up more CPU and RAM than WP8

    not 100% sure

    • That's BS!
      Runs it perfectly.

Decent price. Makes it less of a toss up vs the Nexus 10.

Personally, I had the nexus 10 and went for a Vaio Pro 13.3 and haven't looked back (refurb $800). Gets tons more productivity out of it.

  • I have tried it a few times in different shops and did not find it very smooth, especially the browser.

    • +1

Yeh, that's mainly due to the widgets that are pre-loaded on the home screen. Unfortunately, they make the home screen stutter a bit, but once you get rid of most of them, it runs very smoothly.

This is a problem and fix known to all users of the tablet (hopefully)

  • How does this compare to Asus T100? I know these are in diferent classes but really at the similar price.

    • +3

      Depends what you're after.
The XTZ is a better media consumption device with its higher quality screen and portability. This thing is freakishly thin (6.9mm) and light(495g!!!!). This was the biggest difference I noticed vs other devices.

T100 initially opened with much hyped fanfare (mainly over its price), but imo its cut too many corners. Have tried out the keyboard and you really don't want to be using that thing for anything beyond small emails. Pros are that its cheap and runs windows with a touchscreen. Cons: Everything else (screen, keyboard). If you want a sort of all in one but does nothing particularly well and is portable with a great price to boot then the T100 is a decent buy.

Otherwise I'd get the XTZ for the better media consumption (reading, browsing, movies). Or fork out the extra couple of hundred more and get an ultrabook.

  • no hdmi out is deal breaker for me

    • It has HDMI out over a MHL cable. I use it all the time on my HDTV, but the aspect ratio is a bit off.

      • Do you get videos stuttering while using a MHL Cable?
I get stutters while playing HD Videos via my MHL Adapter (not a MHL Cable).

Aspect ratio is fine for me though.

    • What do you use Hdmi for?

Asus t100 is better than this and was 400 bucks as well. Also full windows 8 and ms office.

    • +2

Different markets, this is water resistant and very nice screen for multimedia. T100 mainly for work / study

    • Different market. IMHO Windows 8 automatically rules a tablet out of contention.

  • I can't find any stock in Melbourne anyway. This is a very nice looking tablet. I have located one in Narre Warren(Good Guys) that I will pick up tonight. Even on ebay you pay around $340 for a used one.

    • Highpoint got stock

  • I was looking at this last year as i'm on the look out for a 10 inch Tablet, then i head good things about the Nexus 10 but didn't like the thick bevelling around the edges, then of course the rumours started about the new Nexus so thought i'd hold out a little.

Well as we all know its still all speculation but i've waited this long now so will wait a little longer, i'm in no rush to get one so if it doesn't come out anytime soon then i may pick one of these up if not the newer version if or when it gets released.

  • Can anyone comment on battery life?

    • +1

It's not the best out there, but it's more than enough. All the reasons that Giteau mentioned in his post more than make up for it. I get 3 full movies at least (with Wifi turned off, mid brightness), and with moderate use (which includes say one TV episode on average a day) I charge it once every 3-4 days, if even that.

Unless you've bought into the Apple ecosystem, this is easily the best 10inch table out there, all things considered, imo.

  • Hmm… tempted to replace my ageing Xoom with this. The lightness and thickness, plus fullHD screen are definitely appealing. but, I don't know if the Xoom is worth replacing yet!

    • +1

If its a xoom and not a xoom2 then easily worth it, it will blow it out of the water

      • You realise Xoom1 was the dev-friendly version, with pretty much identical specs to Xoom2? That's why I haven't replaced it yet - it's so damn good. Custom ROM, overclock, there's been no real reason to upgrade until.. now… :(

So you have a newer tablet, definitely big upgrade from the first generations?

        • +2

dont know about dev, but using them side by side the xoom was slower, perhaps it was fixed with os upgrades

i use all sorts of tablets for my job, ipad 3/4/air, various windows tablets, various samsung tablets. The xperia is so much better.

Go to jb or somewhere and just pick it up and check the screen and weight that should be enough to sway you.

        • Damn you Mikinoz with your persuasive arguments!

        • Sorry :)

  • Interested in this
Can anyone recommended accessories - case, screen protector etc
Particularly interested in a Keyboard &/or dock

    • Incipico case is very good, leave the screen protector on it that comes with device, the dock is charging only. Havent bothered with a keyboard.

  • JB Hifi @ Broadway refused to price match.

  • +1

Harvey Norman priced matched this for me today. :)

Finally found a use for the $400 of gift cards that I redeemed from my credit card points last year just 3 days before Google cut the online price of nexus 4 by $100.

Next step is to find a case.

  • Thanks, found stock in Good Guys in Malaga, WA.

Got it with an 8 Gb card for $407.

The tablet itself is a work of art, light enough to hold with one hand, which I didn't expect for the size.

It also came with Sony offers, including 5 films, but they have to be redeemed by the end of the month.

  • Expired :(

  • Guys - I bought one of these but am having buyers remorse after a week as I don't really need it
If anyone missed the deal I would be glad to on sell a virtually new one at a discount
