I used to shop online at http://www.electusdistribution.com.au/ which is the wholesale arm that supplies jaycar stores - most savings were well above 5%, more like 10-20% off if not more for many items. If it's just an ABN - that's easy and free for anyone to setup :)
Not sure what the criteria are but worth a look if you were considering spending $500 at jaycar to get $25 back.

    • As well as Electus Distribution, there is also https://www.soanarplus.com. All three companies are owned by the same man, and all have the same part numbers for the common parts they stock. Soanarplus are a little different though, they are more of a "serious" electronics supplier - you can't buy toy helicopters from them, but you can buy industrial computers. I reckon about two-thirds of their stock is common with Jaycar and Electus, and for the common items, their pricing is the same as Electus.

For both Electus and Soanar, you can't get pricing until you have set up an account with them, and you need an ABN for that. Pricing is as good as described by Locutus_of_bris, sometimes even better. For example, a large gel-cell battery (part SB1699) is $189.00 at Jaycar, but at SoanarPlus it's only $120.96 + delivery + GST = $147.36. That's almost 22% cheaper. If you bought two, the shipping cost stays the same, so the effective discount is now over 25%, and the Jaycar price didn't include delivery.

    • Just out of curiosity would anybody be kind enough to check the price of this: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0452&CATID=88&… from electus? I'll have to buy from jaycar because I have no acn but the ozbargainer in me wants to know …

      • I was checking all my old comments, and just noticed your query. I only have a Soanar account at the moment, and I've just checked their website. Sadly, they don't stock any amplifiers. In fact the range they stock seems to be getting quite small, I just tried a few parts at random that I've bought before, and I had difficulty finding something that they still stock!

  • Much better off getting a trade card and getting 20% off to start with
stuff 5% off for every $500 you spend - I love jaycar but thats piss poor

    • Absolutely agree. I've had a trade card for over 10 years and have hammered it purely for the instantaneous convenience Jaycar offers over my usual method of purchasing tech goods (online & direct from China).

I posted this as it may be handy for those OzBargainers who don't have an ABN. Ah well, not to worry ;)

"Points expire after 18-months" - this seems to be quite the dealbreaker here. I'm not sure if I ever spend over $500 in any 18 month period at Jaycar.

    • It's not going to be useful for everyone. I get asked to buy a lot of stuff by my relatives - a TV antenna here, a roll of speaker cable there, a solar panel for a caravan - it all adds up. I like Jaycar's wholesale arms better (see comment above), but if I am only buying a single item under $100, the shipping cost of the wholesalers often nullifies the discount. So I usually buy single items from Jaycar rather than from the wholsale arms.

Trade card discount must have changed, Mycosys…

I used to be a regular customer of Jaycar, but not for any 'business' related purpose.

Enquire nicely, even in the absence of a relevant ABN, and you might find yourself in possession of said trade card. Takes you to the next level quantity discount, which equates to a saving of about 10%. Only if you buy enough of the same item to take you to the next quantity discount would you save 20% (or thereabouts), overall.

Most Jaycar prices are outrageous, and while you can more often than not find an identical or equivalent item online for a fraction of the price, some items are difficult to find. Also, occasionally, you need a specific item immediately.

    • I bought 8 SLAs the other day. The trade card didn't do anything - the guy said it only takes you to the first price break - if you buy 1-3, you get the 4+ price. But if you buy 4+, you won't get the 10+ price. Seemed kinda silly for a trade card, as trade people usually buy larger quantities anyway!

      • Unless the terms as regards the trade card have changed, you were led astray.

On dozens of occasions, I would buy an extra 1 or 2 or 3 of a given item (if I could vaguely justify it) (I now have a ridiculous quantity of heatsinks as but one example) in order to get to the 10+ discount. Never any issue. Always checked the receipts to make sure that the right discount was applied.

I also bought batteries on that basis on a couple of occasions. Again, no issue. Not SLA's, though. Maybe they're specifically excluded because of a lower profit margin? Jaycar would know that to sell any to alarm panel installers and the like that their prices would have to be at least a bit keener than on their other stuff.

        • Unless the terms as regards the trade card have changed, you were led astray.

It's the computer that assigns the discount after the trade card is scanned, so maybe SLAs were excluded, or something has changed. I'll try again with other items and see how it goes. I can't remember what discount I got for all my previous purchases.
