  • bought an Imation 320gb from officeworks 5 months ago and it died a couple days ago (just suddenly went in the night, bloody thing), and returned it today for a refund and almost got one of these. Wanted to research reliability first though - anyone have any idea? I've had a western digital portable 500gb die on me in 3 months too, and an internal seagate 1tb die in under a year…so I dunno what to try anymore, pretty much every modern drive I've bought in the last however many years has died on me, blah. Will update this comment when if/when I get a chance to research the reliability of these

      You either have bad luck or You dont take care of your stuff

        the former I guess. Both the WD and the Imation portables were never dropped, they were barely ever even moved. Always made sure to properly disconnect them in windows before unplugging etc. I do use utorrent, and I had only fairly recently started down- and uploading directly onto the Imation, which makes me wonder if that was a bad idea. Otherwise I dunno. I know I'm unlucky ie the failure rate of these things isn't that high; my folks and brother both have WD portables and my brother's 320gb has lasted about…5 years now? and it has been dropped and he never disconnects it properly hah. My parents treat theirs well and it's been going a couple of years (use with a WD media box.) I dunno, let's hope I'm luckier this time but it gave me pause today before just grabbing another one randomly - esp the cheapest on the shelf

    • FWIW those Imation ones are just bog-standard Seagate 320GB SATA drives connected to a controller board. You have killed both of the major players, WD and Seagate.Lol. Maybe something else is going on? Have a stonking subwoofer under your desk? Dodgy USB port?
      Gotta be something.
      There are all kind of "died on me" too. Did it fail to spin up?

      • I actually discovered recently that one or more of my front USB ports might not be up to scratch, when using a microphone to record through it. It was temperamental as hell, and the problem doesn't seem to be anything to do with the mic itself or the connection on that end. So now I'm wondering if maybe you're right. I know it's not good for HDDs to be disconnected while writing to them, or even suddenly while reading from them, but could have one or a few occasions of that have corrupted or destroyed the drive such that it isn't readable or even identifiable anymore at all?

        • Sure, only takes one messed up power down to stuff up the MFT. Be a mess after that.
          If if will fire up at all try deleting everything and formatting with Easus or Paragon.

    Isn't this a better bargain?

    Toshiba Canvio® 3.0 1TB Portable Hard Drive TB110AK3BA $79 at Officeworks.

    • I actually bought one this morning but decided to refund it after I saw this.

      Granted I won't get one until Monday but it's worth it IMO.

      • It is a good deal from ITEstate but compared to the OW deal:

        • Not the same brand;
        • Wait for delivery vs immediate drive down to OW;
        • Need to include postage outside of Sydney Metro (OP is from Melbourne);
        • ITE's quantity limited to 60 (mentioned in deal, is it true?);
        • Convenient after sales service from OW should you need it;
        • I was trying to highlight a better deal from the same (or a similar) shop with a same method of purchase;
        • Monday 27/1 is a public holiday, you will be lucky to get your ITE delivery before midweek.

        And I don't need to remind regular OzBargainers to pay with their ING Orange Everyday Visa Debit card and Paywave for an additional 5% discount ($75.05 final price), do I?

          If you live in Sydney you can go and pick up from IT Estate.

  • We're starting to see 1TB portable drives at similar price point: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130835
