Sydney Opal Card Unlimited System Wide Transport for $2.50 on Sundays

360

Opal card holders across the entire Sydney Transport network can now enjoy unlimited transport across the network for only $2.50 on Sundays thanks to a new brochure now being distributed and available at rail stations.

The 12-page brochure Opal Card Customer Roll Out (TfNSW General T1 RAIL 14.01.14) - promises unlimited travel to Opal users for $2.50 on Sundays.

Page 4 of the brochure - see pdf image - says:

Sunday $2.50 Travel Cap

A $2.50 cap on Sundays applies to Opal card customers - travel all you want on any mode of transport and pay no more than $2.50.

Theres no mention in the brochure of any exclusions or restrictions to the above statement so it obviously applies to network
wide train, bus and ferry services.

Any attempt to fine anyone relying on this widely distributed brochure would simply not stand up in Court.

Opal cards must be loaded with a minimum of $40 so its a lot of Sundays of fun ahead.

Thanks to Sydney Transport's marketing team for making it clear that Opal card holders can: ''travel all you want on any mode of transport and pay no more than $2.50'`.

Previously only pensioners and travellers with children could get unlimited travel on Sundays for $2.50.

  • Used mine today. return travel to Manly, then bondi junction and then chatswood all for $2.50.

Bus: You can not use the card on buses, only 3 buses in Sydney have this system at thie time (bus number 333 to Bondi junction and bondi Beach is one of them). Most buses in the City now have the card reader but non of them work now.

Train to Parramatta: you can not use this card for any where that is not supported by a Opal card reader, like paramatta, but you can go there by ferry.

  • Thanks gsrt22

    Exactly the problem:

The misleading advertising - published, promoted, advertised and endorsed by an agency of a Minister of the Crown - using commuter and State funds - says:

Page 4 of the brochure - see pdf image - says:

    Sunday $2.50 Travel Cap

A $2.50 cap on Sundays applies to Opal card customers - travel all you want on any mode of transport and pay no more than $2.50.

    ALL = entire network.

The above limitations gsrt22 describes are exactly the problem.

    Its misleading and deceptive advertising.

A commuter cannot then be fined for relying on their false statements in their advertising.

"travel all you want on any mode of transport and pay no more than $2.50"

… is a very clear overt promise.

Regardless of all the other rules.

It must be honoured, or compensation paid to anyone who has bought an Opal Card after relying on that statement.

  • Isn't this kind of included if you get a weekly ticket or is the OPAL system a whole new kettle of fish?

    • A weekly ticket only covers your travel within the zone/destination that you have paid for.
The $2.50 Funday ticket allows travel over the whole network - ie outside the zone/destination of the weekly.

    • Plus you need a kid for Funday. Not for Opal.

      • To be more precise you need a kid who is related to you. You can't just borrow one of your neighbour's kids (well not unless you are related to that neighbour).

        http://www.transportnsw.info/sites/en/tickets/terms-conditio…

Family Funday Sunday tickets terms and conditions
        • The travelling group must be related by family and include at least one adult and one child aged up to 15 years (or 16-18 with a current NSW Senior Secondary Student Transport Concession card)
        • Every family member aged 4 or more must purchase a ticket. Children aged 3 or under 4 free.
        • All tickets must be validated each time you use a service, using the ticket barrier gates at train stations and ferry wharves, ticket validation machines on buses or by presenting your ticket to the bus driver or the cashier on board the ferry or light rail.
        • Tickets are only available for use on Sundays and are valid until 04:00 Monday morning.
        • Family Funday Sunday tickets cannot be used on some event buses, charter services, Manly fast ferries or other private ferry services, or NSW regional trains services.
        • Tickets are non-transferrable.

        • That's ok, I don't think my neighbour would like me borrowing his kid. Well, some days he tells his stroppy kid that he might get lent to me and that shuts him up instantly. :)

  • anyone can help me the explanation about this " Weekly Travel Reward
After 8 paid journeys in a week*, all journeys after that are free to customers."

example if I travel between st Leonards and central 4 round trip off peak in 2 days. is that mean after i made 8 travel journey, i will have unlimited travel on train and other mode of transport?

single off peak st Leonards and central is $2.31, so my total cost for 8 trip is $18.48 for a week i have free travel, anyone can confirm about this?

    • Yes, after 8 trips, unlimited travel … on the Opal network.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132094#comment-1820684

      • ok let said this is my regular travelling pattern, i have completed the 8 paid journey between central and st leonards, then i need travel from central to Wollongong, my question is it my travel is free as well between central and Wollongong? thanks

        • no because wollongong is not on the Opal network.

        • ok let said i travel from central to hornsby. do i still need to pay after i met my weekly travel reward?

        • its mean the system won't be fair, the people that live closer will paying less amount for the unlimited travel.

Example people live in newtown and work in the city, and if this person travel during off peak, his single off peak would be $2.31, to get unlimited travel on the network where opal can be use $2.31 * 8 = $18.48

Compare to a person that working off peak from hornsby $3.29*8 = $26.32.

the other question is, if you have achieve your 8 trip, is that mean you can use other mode of transport such as ferry and bus?

        • Yes, you can use ferry and bus … on the Opal network.

    • 1 paid journey = 2 taps between different Opal enabled destinations.
So 8 trips total = 16 'tap ons/offs' between destinations (regardless of mode of transport; train/bus/ferry).

    • Only a shame one cannot earn the perk Sat-Sun to realise the benefit Mon-Fri.

academic for me as I have not transited the sys™in years anyway.

  • Start0900 Off0910> Mon

    J1Off1011 OnJ2 -$02.31
    J2Off1122 OnJ3 -$04.62
    J3Off1233 OnJ4 -$06.93
    J4Off1344 OnJ5 -$09.24
    J5Off1455 OnJ6 -$11.55
    J6Off1606 OnJ7 -$13.86
    J7Off1616 Fnsh -$17.16+2.16

    Start0640 Off0650> Tue
    J8Off0751 End. -$17.31
    Anytime On-off>Wed-Sun
    J9Off0852 -$17.31*Rwrd

•So as I perceive it you might <5d unmetered Opal +most of Tue
•Handy if Mon is a Public Hol. or else scheduled a flex.9-to-5-ers

Could xfer Journey7 -OnJ7-to the next day if that $1.14 fare 'Capped,' were not counted..then regular $2.31. As it is, the template would be tight, with any time spent delayed eating into the 77 minutes projected Opaltime.

  • Good news. Opal will be rolled out & active in most of Western Sydney by next Friday (28/02).

Very soon, won't have to queue for a ticket (good for scrambling onto trains already stopped at the platform). Just ordered myself a card.

  • opal weekly rewards has the loophole

the cheapest single off peak trip train is $2.31
the cheapest bus single trip is $2.1
max paid fare with opal is $15

your task is to take bus that accept opal card, jump from one bus stop to next bus stop for short trip till you hit your 8 trip target to met your opal weekly reward, if you can hit in 1 day, you only paid max only $15 (2.1 * 7 = 14.7, your 8th trip only cost you 30 cents, so total 1 days is $15 and the rest of the week is unlimited)

seriously this system is not fair.

    • seriously this system is not fair

Unfortunately I don't think its meant to be. It's merely an [attractive] incentive for you to adopt using the Opal system (if avail where you req. it). So until its fully rolled out everyone still using paper tickets will get the short end of the stick, which is just till Q4 2014. During transition, paper ticket system will still be in place though for who knows how long or they force everyone on it at a set date.

So leech it all you can for what it is atm as its highly likely they will revise the T&C…

    • "So Joanna, I understand you want to work Tue-Sat instead of Mon-Fri, mind if I ask why?"

"I want to ride the buses for a couple of hours on Mon and get free transport for the rest of the week."

      "Uh, forget I asked…"

Actually I should ride the ferry to Manly one of these Sundays.

      • i work monday - friday.
for people that able to travel with bus for short distance if they can hit 8 trips in 1 day, then the rest of the week is free, compare than people that lived far distance, they need to pay more for their 8 trips to get that unlimited travel for the rest of the week.

  • I think might buy a bike and pedal my way around, consecutive two local stations, tapping my way, surreptitiously , in the twilight. Advantage to the 'burbs. Come soon already T4 Eastern Illawarra i want my bonusr3w4rds.

    • Know any stations that are not very far apart?

    • 1.7k..& in a clean 4min work; \o/.
