GoDaddy was complicit in helping a hacker steal Naoki Hiroshima's twitter account by letting the hacker have multiple attempts to guess 2 of the last 6 digits of the owners credit card. (Paypal gave the guy the last 4)

Sorry but GoDaddy will NEVER get my personal information, even if they were giving services away for free.

Does PayPal get your personal info? Good thing there's no sacrifice in avoiding GoDaddy apart from forgoing the occasional $1 domain deal, and plenty of equal or superior alternatives (NameCheap, Gandi, etc.).

      second this..

    • I'm a namecheap man myself. Two-factor auth as standard (annoyingly its via SMS rather than an app) makes it worthwhile for the security concious / paranoid.

They've got a special running on the 5/2/2014 for 'Move Your Domain Day', coupon code NCMYDD for cheap transfer (USD4) and HOSTWITHNC for 75% off hosting plans.

      https://www.namecheap.com/campaigns/2014/moveyourdomainday-f…

EDIT: On top of this, their standard pricing is pretty damn cheap and they have a decent interface for domain management, DNS hosting, cheap (free for a year) whois privacy guard, etc.

is a good write up on what happend
      and this is the aftermath

      godaddy's responce was
"Our review of the situation reveals that the hacker was already in possession of a large portion of the customer information needed to access the account at the time he contacted GoDaddy. The hacker then socially engineered an employee to provide the remaining information needed to access the customer account. The customer has since regained full access to his GoDaddy account, and we are working with industry partners to help restore services from other providers. We are making necessary changes to employee training to ensure we continue to provide industry-leading security to our customers and stay ahead of evolving hacker techniques."

  • also does not work for .com.au domains

Do not use godaddy for any domain that you wish to actually use, as there is no telling when they will screw you over.

Have there actually been any incidents of them "screwing over" customers who renew their domains in a normal timeframe? I've had some domains with them for 10 years and never had an issue as I'm sure have 99.9% of their millions of customers. I'm not saying that they are the best company in this market - I think Namecheap are better - but they provide a decent service with a pretty good control panel.

  • If you're not in favour of shooting elephants, avoid GoDaddy, big game hunting in Africa is a fave past time of the CEO…

    • lol. When I was still in Uni, my IT Lecturer use to bitch about GoDaddy and elephant killings like no tomorrow.

These people have a record of stealing people's domains, of supporting just about every threat to net freedom, even of having their CEO hunt endangered animals. And whatever you do dont search if a domain is free, then come back later, they have a record of buying them so you have to pay more.
Just no, their prices dont even include privacy so they arent cheap anyway.

go with namecheap, or name.com, or barbados registry - so many options that wont screw you over

http://domainpricemonitor.com/ is down atm but normally has a handle on the best coupons

  • Not worth it - just go with more reputable company.
