Who is John West?

Today, John West is a brand famous throughout the world.

In the early 1800’s though, John West was an ambitious migrant from Linlithgow in Scotland who went on to chase gold seams in California, mill the giant timber of Canada and Oregon and most importantly, export salmon to the world.

The first fish John West processed were salted, packed in barrels and shipped from Oregon’s Colombia River to California and then on around Cape Horn to nourish the hungry workers of Britain’s industrial north.

Seeing the potential – and being the inventive and ambitious Scot that he was – John West not only co-founded the Westport Cannery, he devised and built his own automated can filling machine to get it up and running.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

John West has been a fixture in the kitchens of Australia for the best part of half a century and today is one of the nation’s best loved food brands.

  • Today, John West is a brand famous throughout the world.

His brother Adam left his mark in history too…

In the top 3 WORST tunas

    • +7

considering they only stock about 5 brands of tuna at coles, does it also make it into the 'top 3 BEST tunas'?

      • +2

"Top 3 Worst Tuna" according to who?

Having a quick google on canned tuna takes you to the Greenpeace website.
They certainly arent listed as a top 3 worst tuna there.

        Source please?

IGA/Foodland sell local tuna brands, Tasmanian canned tuna is only about $2 when on sale. Much better buy then this if you using it for a family dinner/guests. But I accept john west is ok for daily salad.

  • Thanx op :-)

Is this nation-wide? It's not in my local brochure for QLD metropolitan areas. Also not in the NSW metropolitan brochure. It does show up in the Melbourne brochure.

Please edit post to indicate which area this is for.

  • there is also managers specials.

  • What do you call a fish with a tie?

    soFISHticated

  • I have always wonder who John West is.

  • The coles tuna is 90c and is pretty good!

    • splurge and get the Sirena. You might change your mind!

      • I actually bought Sirena on sale in coles a couple of days ago (forgot to post though) it was the sirena 185g which was about $2 from memory (limit of 6 iirc)

Blind testing around the work mess room using Safcol, Greenseas, John West and Sirena gave the trophy in a unanimous points win to……..

    wait for it……

    Sirena.
On special at Coles this week. So worth the extra 25c per can.

  • The problem with the cheaper tunas seem to be the flavourings. Sirens are the best at this.

  • Not on offer in Coles Surfers Paradise, most likely the whole of QLD

  • Did you know it is possible to purchase 0.02c gift cards? When you pay 5c it will round it up as free and change will be 5c. 500, 2c gift cards will give you $10, so basically you are getting free $10 gift card.

  • And the rest, as they say, is history.

It IS history, John West (Aust) is owned by

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplot

    http://vimeo.com/45726263

(John West in the EU etc are owned by Thai Union Group, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_West_Foods)

    • Yup, most of the tunas are canned in Thailand, it can be seen from the back of the can. I think perhaps most of the tunas come from there too.

  • Still perfer Sirena 95g at $1.2 each

  • John West tuna is cat food. Do yourself a favor and buy Sirena, it's a bit more pricey but you will definitely notice the difference in quality

    • I agree about John West but Woolworths Select is better in my opinion.

It's in 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil not a Sunflower and Extra Virgin Olive Oil mix like Sirena, John West and others.

The flavored Tuna's have more tuna too in Select than most.

  • Canned Tuna… what can I say.

I used to eat a lot of it but then I found out about the high mercury content. Try this calculator: http://gotmercury.org/article.php?list=type&type=75

And what about the can? Well cans are lined with a lacquer that contains BPA.
