  • i find it hideously slow. i would go nuts trying to use that all the time

    • It's usually not this bad, they are just under load from the large amount of signups at the moment.

      • So, how much cost is involved in a sign-up?

        • There is a free account, that is free for life, you can upgrade to paid plans if you want for more resources/speed

  • I'm a bit puzzled…

Is this a generic VPS, or just a variation
that provides access to Koding's tools, etc.?

What is lost after the 2-hour past logout
VPS switch-Off? (Does it affect only gamers?)

Where is the best intro to VPS's & Koding's
    [variation] VPS?

    TIA

    • Oh, and how does the 250 TB come into it?

      • They are giving away the bonus space until they reach the total of 250TB.

    • They provide a VPS running Ubuntu 13.10.
They have extra stuff they provide to make things easier but it is still a base ubuntu install to start with.
After the timeout the VPS shuts down, you don't loose any data but it wont be accessible until you log in again to boot it back up.
Koding have a bunch of tutorials and helpful hints once you sign up.

      • So, it's a VPS between an OzB-user's computer & [one of] Koding's computer[s] running Ubuntu 13.10, but no more, right?

        • +2

Since you said 'between' you may be confusing it with VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

A VPS(Virtual Private Server) is a 'complete' computer that you can access remotely. Usually it's purpose is to deliver services eg a website, database etc. In this deal they are providing it for the users to login remotely and develop (web) apps in. The deal is targeted at developers who do not have the ability to run a development environment at home.

A VPN is designed to bring remotely located network infrastructure and make it appear as if it was located locally.

        • I think you're right… (blush)

Now, does this mean you could only develop for, eg, Ubuntu 13.10 (& compatible) target computers?

        • No. The development products listed (PHP, Ruby, Java etc) are all platform independent (I think). That is, they are able to run on any operating system. Also, since they are all (again, I think) web languages they are designed to run on a server and deliver a user experience through a standard web browser to a client.

So for example; you could use this service to develop a Ozbargain 2.0 website, an alternative to facebook, or something original.

If you need an original idea, here's a freebie; track bargains by location and overlay it onto google maps. Any true ozbargainer would find this information invaluable when choosing their next house/suburb ;)

  • Signed up with bohdans referral link. Did not realize there was referral wiki.

    • Thanks, I crossed my link out and made it more obvious to use the wiki.
