Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.
You can also get the Sunday paper delivered in the $1 subscription too, but that reverts to $4.50 after the promotional period, which I think is pretty good value anyway

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).
Oh, and we won’t charge you a cancellation fee.

    I'm from Sydney and I subscribed for digital using OP's link. i.e. VIC's. Should it be alright for the gift card to send as I'm from Sydney.

      You can sign up to whatever site, they all lead to a News+ Subscription. The only limitation is home delivery, should still receive the Gift Card nationwide.

        that could just be in relation to the paper delivery, as im sure the gift cards are being sent out separately via mail, and not the same method as the paper delivery? so only digital would be available where the paper isnt normally delivered?
        the T%C are way to broad.

    Where does it say this? Does the renewal happen in 3 weeks as to prepay the entire next month?

    Also, does it mean you would have to cancel on the 18th (5 days before renewal on the 23rd) to avoid the renewal fee

      Found the renewal date: It is found in under My subscriptions —> Manage Subscriptions —> Manage. Then listed under NEXT PAYMENT DATE: Mar 23, 2014

      Still need to know when to cancel though if I subscribed today, Is the 18th the last day to do it? Some ppl have listed the 21st

      This is how they have calculated the savings amount of $76.00 in the statement "Worth up to $76^".

      It has nothing to do with the Rebel voucher.

    Ok I signed up. Should be a good way to end my tenancy at my current place, free weekend herald sun for 3 weeks.

    My money is on (based on past experiences (PLURAL)) that I'll be lucky to see one weekend paper show up at my door. The delivery guys are contractors and they are shithouse.

    I'm making a note on my calendar to cancel on the 21st of March.

      Will wait and see if Rebel Sport gift card arrives within 14 days and if it does I can then recommend that a family member signs up for the offer at the end of the month which will then cover access to the news websites for April.

      Only stipulation so far is that it has to be a new subscriber (new email addy) so only way to know is if the gift card arrives.

    If you select PayPal payments I believe you can cancel the payments directly in PayPal (So you may not have to wait for Herald Sun staff to do it)

    going by how popular this post has become, i'm getting a weird feeling those $40 gift cards maybe "slightly delayed" thereby forcing people to allow the system to automatically renew your subscription, given that if you cancel right away the card will also be cancelled at the same time as well, could get nasty here in 2 weeks, depends how much Herald Sun love there is

          It's more an ethical issue than it is a 'terms and conditions' issue. Not saying I frown upon either those who are making multiple subscriptions OR just one subscription with the intention of cancelling… but it does seem pretty obvious that this 'deal' wasn't designed with the expectation that everyone will sign up simply for the free card, then cancel within that same month.

          Whether it's allowed or not isn't really my point - it's whether that's a conscientious move on our part to get something for essentially nothing when the idea is for genuine long-term subscribers to be rewarded.

          Playing devil's advocate here :P I hate big business, I don't have much respect for Murdoch, and I don't think we're evil for taking advantage of things here… but you can see what I'm getting at, right? Concept-wise.

Not to mention they have auto correct addresses which most likely means they will check the multiple people who reside in the one address and if they see the likes of to many i think a smart person would check the cards / accounts they paid with in order to proceed or not :D

      Kelly (at rebel robina) confirmed you can use two in the same transaction. Didn't ask what the limit was.
      On a related note Ebgames can use up to 7 different payment methods in the same transaction.

      Login to your account, go to FAQ section from left hand menu, and you will find the "contact us" page. Choose "cancellation" from the drop down list and submit.

        If your payment fails, we’ll shoot you an email and ask you to update your details. Your subscription requires payment approximately 5 days prior to the commencement of each billing period, so you should have plenty of time to make the updates.

        If we don’t hear from you, we’ll keep trying. But, if we don’t hear from you after a while, we’ll simply cancel your subscription.

    Typically I'd refuse to give money to any Murdoch paper, but since they're giving me more back than I'm giving them, I've made an exception :)

    Btw, has anyone figured out how to cancel the subscription? Is the only way to call or email them?
