Deal:
I know Herald Sun has had the $1 for 28 days subscription for a while now, but until 31st March 2014 you can also get a $40 gift card to spend on whatever you like at Rebel in store or online. The gift card is sent to you within 14 days of subscription, giving you plenty of time to cancel. If you dont cancel, it then reverts to $4.00 per week.

You can select any of the 4 subscriptions, which start at $1 - this includes the digital only bundle. You will receive a $40 Rebel Sports gift card

Based on the terms and conditions on the subscribe page - the rebel gift card will be sent out within 14 days, so presumably you could not cancel your subscription before then if you intend to.

You only pay $1 now via credit card or PayPal. Your subscription will renew in approx. 3 weeks. Based on registering today, my renewal is March 23rd and I would be charged $16 based on the plan I selected.

According to their FAQ's (once registered), their cancellation policy is as follows:

How much notice do I need to give to cancel my subscription?
Your digital access will be cancelled within 5 business days, but home delivery may continue for up to a further 5 business days (those of you in WA should allow up to 10 business days for deliveries to cease).

      AFAIK, yes. In your acc. click on faqs & on that page will be a query box w/ drop down menus. Choose 'Cancellation Request' & fire off an email to them. Takes 5days processing so do it/allow 5-6days leway before the 23rd just in case so you don't get charged.

      Also you can cancel the re-occuring payments on paypal and according to their faqs (Herald)

      "What happens if my payment fails on my subscription?

      Please note that if you are not the person who paid for this subscription, then this answer does not apply.

      If your payment fails, we’ll shoot you an email and ask you to update your details. Your subscription requires payment approximately 5 days prior to the commencement of each billing period, so you should have plenty of time to make the updates.

      If we don’t hear from you, we’ll keep trying. But, if we don’t hear from you after a while, we’ll simply cancel your subscription."

      agreed but technically if you cancel shouldn't it be a negative loss on their part? I mean yes they're purchasing the GC's at a substantial discount on the hopes you forget to use them but surely they're paying more then a dollar right?

      More likely you would assume working days. If at earliest they post out Mon 3rd, you'd expect to receive it around Thu 20th. That's really cutting it close.

      NB. Still need to cancel by 18th at the latest to avoid renewal, but by then the cards would've already been sent out (hopefully).

          Yea just saw that someone asked the same question as I did lol didnt see it cuz its was negged! Yup sure looks like someone has confirmed that! Thats dodgy as cuz when I googled it the link that show up has an asterisk on it and says that it only applies to the $10 subscription. Oh well its a dollar!

          It's actually a Caret, it reads "^Based on 4 weeks subscription to digital + 7 day delivery" and that relates to the statement "Worth up to $76 dollars^"

          The * relates to the terms and conditions at the footer that read "Rebel $40 Gift Card To take up the Rebel Gift Card offer you must subscribe to a News + Digital or Digital Bundle subscription. The Rebel Gift Card will be sent to you within 14 days of purchase of the subscription."

          So a $1 subscription is OK

    If you cancel after 2 weeks I wonder whether they have to refund you 50c as per their t&c of the cancellation policy. It says that you are entitled to a refund based on a pro rata amount of the prepaid service, which would be 2 weeks at 25c each haha

    Seems like they have shot themselves in the foot here.. what were they thinking? surely they can't cope with all these $40 vouchers? I would guess around 95% of people will cancel after one month.

      Lol may be 10000 new subscriptions , so 200~250K max considering bulk discounting from Rebelsport , may be even lower or free for News, with free advertising to rebel.

      Its like pocket change for News Limited, 1 Million $ they can just get in a minute showing advertisers their growth of subscribers in March :P. They are earning 10 times what they will give us, its a business. They dont think like us and they know we run for freebies like these :D, on top of the 10000 who subscribe at least 100s of them will forget cancelling and there you go. Some might even like and keep the subscription going.

      Master distributed more than 20K , $20 Gift cards to us, whats the problem. There is lot of money they budget for marketing. They dont shot themselves on the foot.

    It says you must give them 5 days notice to cancel, which cuts it fine with how long they may take to post the cards.

    HOWEVER, if you paid by paypal, what's stopping you from cancelling the recurring payment plan via paypal on, say, the 22nd (well after your gift card should be posted). If they can't withdraw it from paypal, tough luck, it's cancelled. No 5 days notice required. I'm guessing the 5 days notice is for their phone/web cancellation through "my account" on the news+ site.

    I'll probably still cancel on the 17/18th.

    I reckon this is gonna end in tears. They'll come out claiming that the first link was a misprint, and that it only applies to digital + 7 day subscriptions, as per the other link that's been posted.

    I reckon we'll get countless posts here of people screaming about false advertising, of how they're legally required to honour it (which they're not for a mistake), and of how it was all a scam to get info.

    I'd be shocked if no one receives a gift gift once they figure out people are just taking advantage of their GC. Best way is to wait till a few do receive it then join the crowed to be safe.

    Ok, just signed up to the $1 one. Hopefully will get the gift cards soon.

    Personally I do use The Age website for my daily mail but I'll give the HS a crack now.

    Also, for those who find annoying that 30 articles per month limit on The Age and SMH website, just remove the cookies or better yet, follow this guide and you will not need to mess around with the cookies ever again…

    For those who read these sites on their iOS devices, either read it in 'Private' mode (I think it is an iOS 7+ thing but maybe on iOS 6) or remember to remove the cookies every so ofter. I prefer Private mode as mass removing cookies also removes some useful ones for me as well.

      You know you can browse in private / incognito on any common browser.

      Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N

      Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P

      IE (don't use IE you noob): There's a button somewhere

      Mobile Chrome (Android/probably iOS): Menu > New incognito tab

      However it is probably easiest to follow that reddit post if you view it on that computer often. I'd prefer ABC news, personally :P
