Hey @Scrooge - at no time is/has there been a minimum balance limit - you can keep the account at $0.00, the deposits are just to make sure you don't get charged the monthly account keeping fee (as well as obviously qualify for the bonus $100).

Since opening the account I deposited my 2k each month in and back out of the account as soon as it cleared (to be captain literal, I set up automatic transfers to happen 3 days apart so the 2k may have sat in the account for a day or two).

Got the SMS, checked balance, have transferred the bonus $100 out now and closed the account (can be done via phone, just be prepared and resolute). I had already done a 2k transfer for April to avoid the $5 account keeping fee which made it simpler/easier to close the account.

Personally, I gave it a go and was willing to keep the account open if it was a better experience - I cited the monthly account keeping fee and not liking their internet banking as reasons for leaving which are both true. Up to you if you want to give a reason for closing the account but be prepared for some backlash & hard-selling, they will try their utmost to keep you.

Just spoke to ANZ and they have confirmed that the $100 is not Interest and doesn't need to be included at tax time. The rep even advised to check the "Interest and Charges" section of Internet Banking where it won't appear either.

    • Thanks.

  • Lame. Need to come to branch to close the account.
Second lame. Just been told this account doesn't give interest.
Wow. No interest but they charge monthly fee. No wonder bankers are rich.

They just gave you $100 tax free and you're complaining about lack of interest. :)

      • i didnt complain about the $100 :)
no seriously, in general. there is an saving account without interest but with monthly fee.
go figure who will run and put their $$ on it…

        i believe still thousands…
        thats why banks makes money…

    • I cancelled mine over the phone. There is no need to go to a branch.

    • Needing to goto the branch for everything is very lame. Took me about 20 minutes at a branch yesterday just to identify myself. Not impressed ANZ!! Y u no identify me online..

  • finally closed my account.

even gave me 25c of interest.

  • I opened the account on the 3rd March when it was posted here and forgot about it, i. e. did not read the email properly that I have to go to a branch to do an identity verification. No mail or reminders received until the 17th April when I received a text message reminding me to transfer 2K on the account by 30th April to receive the $100.
I transferred immediately and did an ID verification at the branch, however I still have not received the $100.

    Anybody else waiting?

    • I got the text too

      • Have you received your $100 yet? I'm still waiting…

        • Not yet, I verified myself and deposited $2000 on 24/04/14. and signed up for online around the 24th or after.

  • Opened in late March. Deposit the money. Verified in branch last week. Used the ANZ app. Still waiting for the $100

    • Received the $100 today

I got mine a couple of weeks ago, and my wife on the same day.
I closed my account this evening, and she was very friendly about it and happy to close it, though she did try to get me to hold onto the account she wasn't pushy about it.

For the sake of saving people time, the direct line for account closure department is 1800 155 261 and they are open 9am-7pm monday to friday.

  • Just closed mine. Was waiting on the line for sooo long. Funny she didn't even ask why or try to get me to keep the account. Guess they've been ozbargained too.
