I hope Malcolm Turnbull is an ozbargainer

The NBN project was probably done using Monster branded fiber optic cables.

      • +14

I was told that the Monster brand fiber cable is superior because it has gold plated electrical connectors and less electromagnetic interference than cheap, no-name fiber.

    • Of course he is, he virtually invented the internet in this country!

      Tony A

      • Thats probably why his speeds at stuck at 56.6 kbps

It depends on the deal. Or more specifically will the deal benefit Murdoch?

Don't believe the bullshit about saving money it's all about saving Murdoch's business from those evil bastards who want to give us the freedom to choose what we want to watch, when we want to watch it.

Of course Ziggy has no conflict of interest at all as those millions of dollars worth of shares he's got in the half owner of Foxtel won't influence his decisions at all…..

of course its about saving money.

about saving that poor starving asshole from losing his money on foxtel.

I wonder how much Telstra pay for this stuff.

    For NBN weekend DIY project?
    Give my NBN back Tony!

    • If you do anything that competes with NBN, you're cherry picking the rich customers and affecting the financial integrity of the NBN as a whole… Just ask TPG.

Only 10 drums available? Bugger, I needed 15…

  • +5

What on earth would anyone who uses oz bargain need that cable yet alone that amount of it! i almost fell off my chair laughing.

Considering NBN is not yet available to everyone, And probably wont be for a very very very long time how would this benefit anyone. Having this in house would mean you would need to invest in euipment that makes this useable. Fiber routers, switches, network cards..

Yes I agree @ 50cents per meter is cheap, but is 1km of cable realistic? Maybe we should all buy this and finish laying the Fiber cabling in the streets thus completing what the Gov should of years ago. :)

Dont underestimate the ozbargain spirit - I expect you will be able to spot 10 people around the country tommorow morning digging a 1km trench from their property to the nearest telstra box. DIY NBN! Just need a deal on a high vis vest so nobody asks any questions as you patch it in.

You're actually forgetting a very important part of using fibre cable - terminations. DIY fibre termination isn't really "a thing". You need expensive equipment before you can even think about splicing it!

  • +1

Get them before they are Brodened

  • +5

My house is one street away from NBN (and will probably be about 10 years until I can get it in my street) - if only I had the splicing skilz :)

    • Ask to borrow somebodies fusion splicer.

At this price, it only costs $425,000 to have fibre-optic powered LAN party between Sydney and Melbourne.

    • +2

      LAN party?

      • +4

LAN Party. No, it does not have anything to do with politics.

          What about lemons?

        • +12

where can i vote for this LAN party? :)

        • +2

I Love a good Ol' Lemon Party!

      or WAN party.

And who will be paying for DWDM to carry the light that far?

  • Based on the money NBN Co spend, I thought fibre optic cable was about 1 Million dollars a roll not 500 dollars.

Must be very small meters if you can pack 1000 of them into a drum.

Hope you're good at fibre terminations:

    • Could do it with my eyes closed

  • I'd buy it just to own a kilometre of something

If you laid all your blood vessels and capillaries end to end, they'd reach about 161,000KM in length.

i call BS, i recon you would probably get no more than a couple of meters before you would end up a blob of dead meat and blood on the floor. happy for someone to youtube it and prove me wrong tho :)
