PS VITA Wi-Fi/3G Console $169 @ DSE

880

I went into my local DSE this morning to purchase the Vita/Killzone bundle posted by theearth a few days ago, only to discover they're selling the console unbundled for $169. Strangely not advertised online, but this was the price it scanned through as.

Nothing I can find suggests that the unit is locked to Vodafone (although a Vodafone sim is included). Furthermore, the game Wipeout 2048 is included when you make your first Vodafone recharge (minimum $10, http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/wireless-internet/mobile…), so not a bad deal if you aren't on PS+ (it's currently US$13.49 on US psn or free with PS+).

    Dangerously tempting

  • But for another $30 u get killzone isn't better?

    • My memory is fuzzy, but Killzone was 19.99USD on the US PSN store.

      • +3

I picked it up for $9 on the US PSN store in January during a sale. Bargain
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130335

        • Damn. Have my psn on au. Any chance to switch to us?

        • +1

You need to make a new US account. Once you get an US account. Look up the process to change vita region to US.

    • Not if you don't want Killzone.

    • +15

      Sorry but you're wrong.

The quality of handheld games in general is excellent, far better than the past. Its the mobile gaming sector that is shovelware/microtransaction central.

      • +3

also this is a great deal if you're immersed in the 'sony ecosystem'

ie. have a ps3/ps4 and subscribe to psn

you get the same game on all 3 platforms + cross save capability for one low price (LOL)

      • -4

Already replied below but not sure why I'm being negged for an objectively true statement. I'm not saying handheld games today are bad, I've bought 2 vitas. But objectively speaking by either sales of handheld or the quality and output of handheld games neither handheld can stand up to the PSP / DS generation, even if you adjust for the time that both have been out.

        • +1

Well the vita can play psp games and i have a DS/3DS and I prefer the vita over them.

        • You are being negged because you are stating your personal opinion as if it is a fact.

      • microtrans…what?

    • +2

      Disagree

      Uncharted Golden Abyss
      Hotline Miami
      Wipeout 2048
      Spelunky
      Soul Sacrifice
      Gravity Rush
      Limbo
      Guacamelee!
      Tearaway
      Dokuro
      Killzone

And most are on sale for a couple of bucks at times if you have PS+. Not to mention all the PS Classics/PS Mini games. Hell, being able to play Final Fantasy on a portable console is enough to sell this alone

      • I would argue that at the same point in its life the PSP had a better library than the Vita. I think the gap, if it exists at all, is less for the 3DS, but the Vita is now a niche animegame handheld in Japan which is a bit of a shame.

Compare Namco's Vita output to the games it put out PSP. Do the same for Squeenix and Konami. I think that dedicated handhelds are on their way out, killed by Japan's obsession with (bad) mobile games like KanColle and such. Corporations will go for low hanging fruit and these low risk, low capital requirement mobile games are a far safer bet than developing real games like Crisis core or another handheld MGS / Ace Combat.

I'm not arguing that the output on handhelds today is bad, just that it can't compare to the DS/PSP in terms of output or broad appeal (see sales, both are worse than their predecessors).

        • "the Vita is now a niche animegame handheld in Japan which is a bit of a shame"
And this is what the psp was, that was why it was popular.

        • +1

This is a bargain site, that's why you got negged. Go to Gaf to spew your poison if you must.

        • Lol. Never thought I'd see a GAF callout on OzB.

        • you can play psp games on the vita! what is your point? lol

      • Tipping point for me was the recent FFX HD remaster. Its a beautiful game for its time and reminds me what is good about gaming. And to my suprise most other games i've played so far (7 of 9) have been brilliant and well worth the money/time.

      • -1

Same games people have been bragging about for months. Do any publishers actually still support this platform? Shame for such sexy hardware.

    • Why would you complain about resolution and then call it a shadow of its former self? Also only mobile games rely heavily on touch controls, the games on 3DS and Vita are quality games that actually use proper controls. I own both a Vita and 3DS and they're fantastic, they offer an experience as good as home console games do now.

    Great price! buy it!
I bought the $199 16GB Mega Pack Deal, then sold the Mega Pack for around $35 so works out very similar and bought a 64gb mem card for ~$95. Awesome console, mine is sitting next to me just updated to the new firmware 3.10 (now you can put 500 app icons) so well worth getting a 64gb mem card and PS+!

To give you an idea of how good PS+ and Vita is, I got PS+ US subscription when I got my PS4 for really cheap and I already have 8 playable Vita games to play from it for PS+ (along with the PS3 and PS4 games) and most of them are big titles. And the sales are fantastic too.

    • do you prefer your 3ds or vita Cyrax?

      • Vita, games focused more for adults and it ties well into the Sony ecosystem

  • +2

If you've got a PS4, the $170 is almost worth it for the Remote Play ALONE

    • +1

Remote play is very good from my experience; Resogun.

    • Wow you have almost sold me. Forgot about that. Does Infamous Second Son have remote play?

      • Yes

      • I played it using remote play last night , it still looks amazing on the vita which I was surprised by, however in more chaotic parts of the game it did struggle a little and I had to pause the game for 10secs… but never lost its connection.

Although it worked fine infamous needs the big screen for the full effect… But Yeh I was Damn impressed by it.

  • +1

I am thinking of remote play my cousin's ps4 over in Hong Kong, with the time difference I can play an hour or two after work before he gets home HAHAHA.

Also works as a second controller!

    • Also works as a second controller!

I have heard this also, is it only available on certain games?

      • I am pretty sure it works with all games, but the obvious missing R2 and L2 would be replace by the touch pad on the back along with some other buttons placed in different areas. (same as remote play)

It is not suppose to be a full replacement of the dual shock but I guess if you only occassionaly have guest over, it saves you having a controller unused sitting around most of the time.

        • how well does it work with the ps3?

        • Not that well, I can't really tell, but youtube reviews mentioned it wasn't really made for Ps3 so it can be laggy.

Don't trust me though, I did a very limited research days ago when the 199 bundle popped up.

    • Remote play from hong kong is going to be incredibly laggy, so don't get your hopes up.

      • Loll yeah I don't think it will be that great outside of the house…

  • OP, I would remove that Myki card number if i were you.

    • +2

It's just a throwaway I had in my wallet - not registered and no credit :)

      • Fair enough then :p

  • +1

+1 for the fancy work with pen & MyKi.

  • Bargain PSP!
Myki card credit vanish = priceless

  • Price so tempting, but havent been into PS VITA, can it be jailbreak at all with custom firmware?

  • +1

If you've been wavering on whether to buy a Vita it's a good time, as the second gen with comparatively crappy screen is due anytime.

    • +5

But also with longer battery life, onboard storage, micro USB charging, and of course thinner/lighter. I can deal with a slightly worse screen.

      • +5

The OLED is a big difference.

        • To some.

      • +3

The onboard storage can't be used in conjunction with a memory card. You either use the 1gig onboard or a memory card, not both.

  • +4

    I already own a 3DS XL… don't tempt me!

    • +1

Do it! I bought a Vita months ago and just bought a 3DSXL days ago. Just to be sure I don't miss out any big games on either consoles. Do it!!!

  • Very tempting! Is it worth picking up without a ps3/4. I do my gaming on PC but this would be handy for the 3 hour daily commute! Any good games out for it? Was a big fan of Socom on the PSP!

    • +2

to be honest i wouldnt have gotten one if i didnt have the ps4, the remote play from what i have read is good and it helps me out at home when the tv is being used.

PSP was great though :) i agree socom was really good… i haven't followed whats great on vita.

    • I don't use it with the PS4, but if you own a PS+ account, you get instant access to 6 Vita games.

      • yes it is worth it. games are really cheap during the psn sales.

      • im trying to get US PSN+ but so far havent been able to purchase it hehehehe

    • I never used mine with my ps3 and had it for over a year before I got my ps4 and loved it so definitely don't need the ps4, but if you get one in the future then that's just a plus :)

  • I have booked my bundle from DSE yesterday, picking them up later today.

Since it is a bundle that was made up by DSE, I think they will allow me cancelling on the game.

I will inquire whether I can just grab the 3G/WIFI console only if its $30 cheaper and report back later tonight.

Perhaps someone can confirm that this is Australia wide?

The little big planet PS Vita + 4GB memory card bundle is also selling @ $199 on DSE website if anyone is interested.

  • +1

Price matched EBgames $199, they were all out of 3G so I managed to score a Wifi with Killzone game (not a bundle so the game is separate).
Good deal, now I need to sell the game

  • Anyone know of any good deals on the memory cards?

    • Ebay has the 64GB ones from HK for about $112-$115.

DSE online (click and collect only) has little big planet + PS Vita wifi + 4GB memory card bundle @ $199 if you don't need massive size storage.

      • Thanks mate, I'll look into the 64gb card, need that space for all the ps plus games

        • Try superufo for a 64gb card. I just bought one from them for about $100.

  • Good deal. Might be last chance to get OLED screen.

  • YoYo Games just announced that you can build your Game Maker Studio games for PS3, PS4 & PS Vita - so this couldn't have come at a better time!

Am I the only one who finds the Vita uncomfortable to hold for long periods? I think it has something to do with the low position of the sticks AND needing to use the L and R buttons regularly. It's not a natural position for my fingers and a bit of a stretch. On the PSP I tried to use the D-pad as much as I could.

    • yes :)

    • +1

I couldn't use mine for more than 5 minutes without getting hand cramps. I bought one of the "grip" things that make's it more like a console controller shape, but still get cramps after not too long.

  • damn, went to DSE in gawler place (SA) and no stock of it :(.

    • the one i checked has stock but $199

      • which store did you check? DSE.com.au says all stores are out of stock in SA :S.

  • is it worth getting the 3g model?
deciding wether to get the base model 3g/wifi for $169 or the little big planet + 4gig card or killzone combo

    • I personally didn't have a choice, but I've been told these days people just tether to their phones anyway
But I've never been an adopter of separate data plans, I own an Ipad with 3G capability and the only time I used it was when I moved house and it was a temp internet replacement

    • is it worth getting the 3g model?

No. You can't play games over 3G, so there's really no point in having it.

  • would jb-hifi willing to price match this?

    • I called JB Hifi, they wouldn't price match it unless it was on their website. No stock anywhere for DSE :(.

  • +3

    Got an even better deal.

    $169 for 3G/Wifi unit + Killzone mercenary

Chatswood store, NSW. That was their last unit though. Should have seen the look on the guy's face when he scanned it. :P

    • any chance of uploading the receipt else where the link is not working for me!
      thanks

      • It's the same link. Try pasting it in to your browser.

Aww, I was expecting that picture to be a picture of his face.

    • So did you just go in there for the bundle, yet it scanned out for $169? or he just gave you the killzone game out of frustration? lol.

      • Haha. Nope. I saw the original post and called them up to see if they've got any in stock. They told me they've got one left which was the console+Killzone bundle. Asked him for the price and he said it was $169. Was totally not expecting the game to be included in the deal. Took a long lunch break and went there hoping I hadn't heard the price wrong. Was a different guy when I reached there, but they had kept it aside for me. :)

        • Am picking up 2 of them later today, may the force be with me on this one.

          LOL.

    • I got similar deal with you.

$184 for 3G/Wifi unit + Killzone + Little Big Planet.

I got it at Cannington, WA store. It may their last unit though. But worth it to check with them.

      What a deal! :)

    • I went to jb (hornsby, Nsw) and asked if they price matched. They said yes so I told them the deal you got. The guy had to ask his manager if he could match it. 5 minutes later he came back saying they will do it. Crazy good deal, thanks man.

      • I think DSE system is running error.

If you buy a vita, which scanned at $169. The killzone game will scan at $0. It wasnt the case with the little big planet.

I bought 2 consoles, 1 with Killzone, another with Little Big Planet. Whilst the Killzone scanned at $0, the little big planet is still scanned at $29.98, the guy was a bit confused and ended up marking down the little big planet to ZERO too. And obviously I keep showing my innocent poker face through out the checking out process :).

For some reason, the console was supposed to scan in at $169 and the game at $30. But just didnt scan it properly for Killzone.

    • WOuld you mine reposting the receipt with the date so i could try my luck to price match jbhifi for $169 includeing killzone.

  • Thanks OP, picked up 2 @ $169 :)

  • Managed to price match the PS Vita console for $169 at JB Hifi Adelaide Street. Speak with Andrew if you want to get one. Also, it seems that Dick Smith Carindale is the only store in Brisbane that has stock.

    • here is to hoping they still have stock/price match after i'm done with this meeting.

      • Good luck.

        • +1

Could you plz upload the receipt from jb hi fi? Cheers
Edit: They just had wifi one so didn't get it.

  • +2

got the wifi one for $169 @carlingford DSE…didn't have the 3G one or the bundle

no stock @DSE parramatta…got them to check in other stores..very few available around sydney

    • Was there more than one at Carlingford?

      • Didn't ask them…but when I checked @ parra…they said carlingford had 3 in stock of which I got one
