This was posted before but Bing Lee didn't have much online stock. It is back online now so I thought I'd post again due to the recent popular NEX-6 deal. Mods, if you think this is a dup, please remove.

They also have the 55-210mm zoom lens as well for the same price but the 50mm is optically a much better lens.

I have tried the online negotiation thing and both lenses came down to $185 without too much hassel.

  • Darn it, i was trying not to get this one and save up for the SEL35F18B… you're making it hard for me!

get the 35 - its a fkn fantastic lens.

i've got the 35mm and trying to decide whether it's worth grabbing this too…

      • I was thinking if I had the 35, I probably wouldn't use the 50. Group shots are quite difficult with the 50.
If the the 35 was this cheap I'd pick it up. But looks like it is around high 400s
Cheapest I can find is here for $472 delivered.

It seems to be $426.80 from VideoPro
          http://www.videopro.com.au/p-6139-sony-sel35f18-black-35mm-f…

I use the kit zoom most of the time for general snapshots and video and use the 50mm when I want the 'wow' factor. The 35mm is good but it's a lot more expensive than the 50 1.8. A cheaper alternative would be the Sigma 30mm f2.8 but you give up OSS and an extra stop of light, amongst other things.

        • "I was thinking if I had the 35, I probably wouldn't use the 50."

yeah good point… the 35 is more versatile. if you google "which lens should i buy for my nex?" - the majority say to get the 35.

the 50 with crop factor is around 85mm, the 35 is around 50mm.

          guess i'll leave it :)

        • Yeah I agree the 35mm is more versatile. The 50mm is more ideal for portraits.
Anyway, it's a cheap prime that gives fantastic results for the price.

        • If you are motivated to change lenses it might be worthwhile. I usually can't be arsed changing them.

Buy here for $399 Australian stock. http://www.digidirect.com.au/camera_lenses/sony/e_series_len…

I bought one yesterday in their Melbourne store and the salesman offered me $375 after I asked. Bought it on the spot!

        • Awesome find Vietsoldier, thanks!

      • The 90-110mm lens (35mm eqv) is range of choice for doing portrat shooting?

  • My favourite lens for my NEX-6. Now I need a deal on a wider prime.

    • If you can afford it, the Zeiss 24mm is incredible. It's expensive, but I have had it for over two years now and it's barely left my NEX-7.

      • Yeah damn expensive. How do you find it without OSS? Do we need OSS?

        • My only experience with OSS is on the Tamron 18-210mm. It worked beautiful well, and for a superzoom lens it was totally useful.

On the other hand, 24mm is a relatively short focal length (even at the effective 36mm after the crop). Plus it's max aperture is f1.8 so you can bump up your shutter speed with plenty of room to open it up. It still takes lovely clear photos wide open. These things together mean that OSS is really not needed.

It's just a very, very good lens. The only negative I have for it is that it's bigger than prime lenses for other systems (about the same size as the 18-55 kit lens for the NEX line). But this just seems to be the nature of the E-mount primes. It's the best lens I've ever bought and if it had been available sooner, I probably would have half the amount of glass I've got now.

  • what's the cheapest for SAL35F18?

  • Also seems like a great price for the 55-210 zoom lens.

I have an a7 so waiting for some of the full frame E-mounts to become more reasonably priced. Some of these prices are making me consider getting the cropped lenses.

Don't buy that zoom lens, not sharp at all. I sold mine 1 week ago for $200 (only've used 1 month). Get the SEL50mmF18, it's a deal.

      • It's sharp enough for many applications and a good compromise for anyone wanting a zoom tele lens. Plenty of detailed tests around to show its pros and cons. For $199 new it's a bargain.

    • A little off topic, but how are you liking your A7?

      • Never mind, megaamaid. In the last hour and 20 minutes I've researched and convinced myself to buy the A7+55mm prime. Grey import, the pair will land about $2500. Now to sell my NEX-7!

I'm not really making much out of it yet, only had a few weeks. I've come from an a55 and I'd been a little hesitant in fully jumping into the a-mount. Turned out to be a good thing because I’m going to be investing in the e-mount.

Have the full frame a-mount adapter, a pretty good 17-35 full frame Minolta. Crappy (very) 50-200 tamron and the kit lens 28-70 so far.

Menus take a little getting used to, but there are lots of things to like about the a7. You'll love it

  • How does this compare to the Sigma 30mm F2.8?

    • Simply: much much better.

      • Hang on, which is better? The Sony or Sigma?

        • Well he said this, so I was talking about the Sony 50mm.

        • Have you used the Sigma 30mm 2.8?
They're not very comparable due to the FL and aperture difference but the 30mm is an excellent lens.

The Sigma is actually the sharpest lens for E Mount unless something changed in the last few months:

Don't get me wrong, the Sony is a good lens (with bonus OIS) but don't discount the Sigma because it's third party. Over the last few years they've made some of the best lenses available for any system (35 f/1.4, 18-35 f/1.8, soon 50 f/1.4)

Edit: in case it's unclear, this is a reply to plmko

        • I've used both the sony 50 and sigma 30, the sigma hands down is sharper and smaller. The plus for the sony is the OIS and fast 1.8 aperture.

The sigma 30 is more a cheaper alternative to the sony 35 which is much more expensive.

        • the sigma hands down is sharper and smaller

It better be for a shorter focal length lens with smaller aperture!
I doubt you would see the sharpness difference unless you were pixel peeping?

        • I wasn't pixel peeping, it's just sharper, even when you stop down the sony 50. Sigma lens are known to be big on sharpness.

  • The sigma has received rave reviews as well. Roughly priced the same as the Sony.

    • I'm looking at the Sigma too. For that price, it should be good value. Only concern is the lack of IS.

      • shorter focal length and smaller aperture - doesn't give you as good background isolation or defocusing of the background.

  • After all this discussion, I really want a SEL35F18
I love bokeh so I think I need the F1.8
This is in regards to a comparison with the Sigma lens.

  • Sweet deal. I'd get it if I didn't just buy the FE 55mm (although this is a better buying you don't plan on going full frame).

The 35mm f1.8 would probably be a more useful lens though. That'd be my pick if I was getting my first prime.

As for the 55-210mm, I wouldn't call it soft (it's so easy to throw that word around nowadays) but I will say that it's not as sharp on the long end as it is at other focal lengths. I have the Olympus 40-150mm which is much sharper at the long end and if I didn't have that, I probably wouldn't be bothered by the performance of the Sony 55-210. It's not a bad option if you're shooting with a NEX camera and I've been happy with the results.
