  • how does it compare against the rx 100?

    • +1

RX100 real pocket camera, quite good in picture quality and fast focus. Own one and missus really happy for pocket size and picture quality.

NEX 6 has more option for interchange lens. $509.15 is good price

you can google RX100 vs NEX 6 there is some good preview there
      http://snapsort.com/compare/Sony-Alpha-NEX-6-vs-Sony-Cybersh…

      • +3

You forgot one important difference - sensor size.
        RX100 is only a 1" sensor (surface area 116 mm2), NEX 6 is APS-C (surface area 368mm2).
That makes a big difference in terms of low light performance and also if you like shallow depth of field photography.

        • +2

Don't discount the rx100 in lowlight if you're only going to use the slow kit lens with the NEX6.

        • +2

Yes and no. With the kit lens, both cameras are similar in low light - The RX100 is f1.8 at widest/fastest. Nex 6 kit is f3.5 at widest/fastest. So the sensor size advantage is lost on lens speed. However, you always have the option of getting a faster lens with the NEX.

Also, the snapsort score for Nex 6 is artificially low because it did'nt include the kit lens in the NEX 6 score. If you add up the lens scores properly the NEX 6 wins.

  • that's a crazy good price!

  • As per other recent threads, the NEX-6 is basically superceded by the better A6000. However the A6000 is $950 so obviously you'd be saving a lot of money with the NEX-6.

    • +3

A6000 is newer but not really better in everything, the viewfinder in A6000 is far worse than the Nex-6. For almost half the price of A6000, Nex-6 is way better value.

    • +2

By checking up the reviews about A6000 and compare the specs with NEX6, around $450 difference really makes A6000 not attractive at all IMHO.

    • Difficult choice. There are a lot of improvements with the A6000 but are they worth $400 or so?

      A6000

      Pro:
*24mp vs 16mp. Not hugely important.
*Much faster AF with twice as many focus points. Haven't seen many low light tests but regular lighting the AF is much quicker. Could potentially be worth the price difference.
*Alpha series menus. Much improved over NEX.

      Con:
*Lower EVF resolution. HOWEVER some say its colours are more accurate and detailed so maybe this should be a pro?
      *More expensive.

      • +1

The AF could be a clincher.

I've had a NEX5 for almost 4 years and just got a NEX6 a few months ago. On both I am underwhelmed by the AF, especially the speed - but otherwise I have been very happy.

        • That's exactly why I went for the α6000.

The premium I paid was a lot less than what people are quoting above, so it was worth it in my opinion…

The new AF spans approx. 91% (height) x 92% (width) of the sensor versus approx. 47% x 52% on the NEX-6, so the sensor is almost completely covered by AF points. Additionally, there are now 179 phase-detect AF points and 25 contrast-detect points. I haven't had a great deal of use yet, but the autofocus does seem quicker and more flexible than the NEX6, and it certainly is better as the light dims, although like many cameras as you approach total darkness it starts to struggle. The AF actually seems to show up weaknesses in the speed of some of the lenses ;-)

The lower resolution EVF isn't as obvious as you might expect, and subjectively it actually seems better for focusing, because it offers more visible detail and it undeniably provides far better colour accuracy.

Another change that you didn't mention was the menu system - many people seem to prefer the α6000 default menu system.

(Even with all of the above I am finding myself using the RX100M2 more because it is 'pocketable' and I can take it with me everywhere)

  • +4

Combined with this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/135335 to get a $50 JBHiFi gift card.

  • Great camera, I bought one in London when it first came out and it's accompanied me through many countries. Very good price considering I paid 900 Pounds on release!!!!

  • Pretty cheap, grey is around $650-680

  • Wow Crazy price for beast Camera, I bought it in JAN this year Sony NEX 6 +Triple kit with 16-50 + 55-210mm + 50mm F1.8 , with free 16GB -Sandisk extreme pro 95MB/s 633x(worth$50 grey market) & Free Sony Original Bag (worth $50 sony website) Entire package for $950 - Not to mention Australian Stock phewwwwwww
Since then i have been called NEIGHBOR'S enemy owners pride ;-) among the mates , have seen mates suffering carrying those dumbbles sized cameras and making their biceps to achieve some good photography results .
DSLR Sensor is epicly powerful and produces amazing pictures. Very happy with my purchase!!!

  • I can also vouch for this camera. Bought it for $760 during the last JB sale. It's a fantastic camera.
The only thing I miss compared to my previous m4/3 (Panasonic GF3) is lacking the ability to select the focus area via a touch screen. The excellent focus peeking makes up for it though.

  • I'm really excited about this deal!

  • +1

Great camera. Bit slow in start-up and navigating menus however, which prompted me to recently switch to OM-D EM5 Micro 4/3 camera as the handling and speed is better. I however felt the pictures on the NEX were slightly better quality.

Perhaps before buying, ask yourself if you will buy lenses as the Sony E-Mount lenses are a tad expensive and tend to lack selection compared to other systems. Also, if you don't need the Electronic Viewfinder, you'll probably be better off saving a few hundred by getting the NEX-3, which outputs the same great image quality.

Aside from that, great price! Got mine for around 600 on eBay 3 months ago.

  • Good price.

  • what lenses are good for this?
    -camera newb

  • It doesn't have Touchscreen but have Electronic View Finder (EVF). IMO, I feel touchscreen is quite convenience to view/zoom pics and menu selection.

    • Has more than enough buttons and dials to make access to your most used settings a breeze though. The EVF was the deal breaker for me, although it's a bit of a power hog.

Great price for a very good camera, >$100 less than I paid at JB's only a couple of months ago.

  • +1

Was just looking at buying one of these or the RX100.

Would anyone have recommendations between the two, purely based on image quality and taking into account the current price of the RX100 being $150 more than this?

    • +2

Isn't the RX100 only $548.25 at JB in the same sale?
      http://www.jbhifi.com.au/photo/digital-cameras/sony/cyber-sh…

See the first comment above for comaprison link, just don't forget the NEX 6 score didn't include any lens scores.
For me, if you are not going to get additional lenses, the RX100 is preferrable because it's small(er) and the lens has longer reach.
But if you think you'd like to get additional lenses in the future to expand your creative options, then the NEX 6 is definitely the better camera.

      • Wanted to get feedback from ozbargainers. I feel those comparisons are a bit outta touch with the real world sometimes.

I'm looking at the RX100 mark ii.

Good point on the lenses. Thanks!

        • I am a fan of the RX100M2 - it is so small that I can carry it with me everywhere (and actually take shots I would otherwise miss), and it produces better pictures than many of my friend's SLRs. I have DSLRs, but since getting the RX100M2 I find I use them less.

Also, whilst some would consider the NFC/WiFi remote control that was added to the M2 to be a gimmick, I have found it to be genuinely useful for a number of applications including group photos (where you want EVERYBODY in the picture), night shots, 'surprise' pictures, etc

If you can get a good price on the M2 (I ended up paying about the same as the M1 at the time), I would hope you will be as happy as I am with it :-)

    • +1

They are two totally different cameras.
I have an RX100 (got it got for ~$500 a while ago) and Pentax k-5 (which is somehow closer to NEX-6).
      I'm happy with both.

  • Snatched one, thanks OP!

  • NEX 6 is an excellent camera (I have one), but also end of life; the a6000 is out, but that has a worse viewfinder… go figure.
NEX 6 is in a totally different league (better) to the RX.

    • Its end of life for all NEX cameras, but the e-mount lenses are still compatible with the new alphas and the old NEXs, that's one good thing about it, as long as SONY sticks with a-mount and e-mount and doesn't release another mount.

    • I am really surprised you think the α6000 viewfinder looks worse than the NEX-6 - everybody I have shown it to thinks it looks better, with much more accurate colours, and more discernible detail for focusing ?!?

  • Thnx OP.Got one in-store.

  • Do JB HiFi sell grey imports? I picked mine up today, only had Hong Kong and Arabic instructions inside. Not that I need paper manuals, but just suspicious. I was trying to check what comes in the box.

This kit doesn't come with a camera body or camera lens cap, which kinda sucks. Also no battery charger, have to charge from the camera via USB into a powerbrick which is supplied.

But otherwise, pretty good value camera!

    • Did you get an open box camera? mine came with 3 instruction booklets, chinese, Arabic and English. the box should also come with a $30 mysony voucher for way overpriced accesores on the mysony store.
usb charging has its pluses and minuses.

      • yeah my box was opened, i was going to question it, but it looked like it was new and wrapped properly inside when he took it from the cupboard. didnt get any voucher either. thx for the heads up!

  • Bought a NEX-3n last time… just wondering if it's worth selling my 3n and get this one? much improvement?? or waste of money ?

    • NEX 6 has something great that NEX 3N does not have:

      1.mode dial, function dial

      2.wifi and camera apps

3.high res EVF (that's the killer)

      5.much faster shutter speed

      etc.

      • And also:
+ PDAF (Phase detection auto focus), 99 focus points.
+ Stronger built in flash for Nex-6, GN 6 at ISO 100.
        + Better res LCD
        + Hotshoe (MIS)
+ Wider range ISO (up to 25600)
+ And better video (up to 60fps 1080p)

    • +1

IQ will be near identical. I don't think it's worth upgrading at all unless you really need the EVF and don't mind losing the 180 flip screen for it. Certain features on NEX-6 are gimmick like higher ISO range (still unusable) and PDAF (poorly implemented, won't make a dramatic difference unlike the a6000).

  • Noooooooo! Just bought an RX100 grey import two days ago. :(
Had I waited I could've spent $30 more to get local stock.

    Bum bum bum.

    • RX100 is 'pocket' camera which has amazing picture quality for its class. Nex-6 is EVIL cam, which few of its lenses can beat RX100 IQ.

Still, purchasing RX100 is not a big mistake if you don't want to spend money on more lenses.

  • Very tempting, considering I have a gift card and a Canon 650D collecting dust (though perhaps that's a sign not to buy one!)

    • Probably why it's collecting dust… can't be arsed to lug a dslr around…

Ever since switching from DSLR to MILC I tend to take my camera out and use it more.

      • Bought it yesterday, though was only display left, they are sold out around Perth. Sadly had to return as most of the accessories were missing but got it sorted, though couldn't get any sealed boxes.

  • I have 5N with external EVF, and decided to upgrade to this and sell 5N.

  • spotted this deal. Not sure how much shipping is though.
    http://www.diamondscamera.com.au/sony-nex-6-16-50-55-210mm-t…

    • $100 cheaper than the TED's deal a while back. Though I prefer 35F18 lens compare to the 50F18

  • WHaat do you rekn abt the 5D mark III… $2970.75
and it's local store, so less fuss for warranty purposes.
anyone know if canon has an upcomming replacement?. or should I just take the dive?

  • Damn, that's a good price.. got mine at $679 last time round. (Been secretly dreading how quickly the price would drop on it with the A6000 release, 25% in 2 months it seems….) Great little camera though..

  • Does the 16-50MM Lens have zoom capability?

    • Yeah zoom up to 50mm, or 75mm on 35m equivalent. Still not as zoomy as the 55-210mm lens, but zoom nonetheless.

  • Got the D7100 body only for $1100.. Not a bad price for local stock.

  • Took my NEX 5R with 18-200mm zoom lens for Europe travel. That was the best decision I ever had! Amazing crisp quality of zoomed images from standing, even ornated ceiling inside dimly lit basilicas etc without flash. I sympathise fellow travellers who had to lug heavy DSLRs.

    • +3

Some people still believes only melon size DSLR produces crisp quality image, if only they open their melon size eyes to see the results of NEX cameras.

  • Sold out online. In store pick up online now. my local JB had it for $699 (less 15%) so the online price is much cheaper - you'll need to show them the online price to get the deal…

  • awesome price

  • Bought the Canon 70D with 18-55mm kit for $1251 (extra discount on top of the 15% as I mentioned some place online in Aus who could do it for $1145 with Oz Stock (I think)). I'll also be getting an extra 10% via duty free when we go on holiday in a month.

Now to find some cheap UH-1 Sd cards for it and a cheap but decent tripod.

  • Got the second last one from Werribee Plaza JB Hi-Fi, they have the sale price $665 displayed but was told they're $509 when I asked. The nice lady even took the 15c off :)

    • that's extra saving of 0.03% . Well done! :-)

  • Picked one up from JB in Springvale. Had the Sony 3N which I sold for $320. Plus im travelling O/S next month so will claim the TRS. So in effect this camera cost me around $450.

$130 to upgrade from the 3n to the Nex 6. Bargain.

  • -2

    Is the flash strong enough?

I would think the only point of having a big lens unless you are taking pictures of wildlife or landscape during low light visibility. Most of the other DSLRs have this large flash bulb.

    • Sorry but you are not quite right.

    • perhaps spend a bit more time reading photography basics…

    • not sure what you mean, but the flash has GN ratings of 6 for ISO 100. This is pretty high compare to other built in flash on other mirrorless cameras.

  • Anyone got the camera from this deal and….ugh well, wanna sell it??? :P
    Shot me an pm please
    Wayyy missed this out
