looks like it does not have good reviews

Don't waste your money on this. It'll most likely die on you just as the warranty runs out like all Ryobi. Ryobi is a piece of junk

Spend $80 more and get something that will seriously last you, and is made in Japan with 5 years warranty.

    http://www.karlsmowers.com.au/newshop/products/2278/Echo_GT2…

There was another shop selling it on ebay for that price too, but they seem to have run out.

    • Agree Ryobi is J.U.N.K

However, I do not agree with your recommendation to buy an Echo. Echo are OK, but Stihl is great. People recommend buying Echo when they can't afford a Stihl, but at the moment Stihl FS38 is $199.

      • thanks mate, I am also inclined to buy Stihl FS38 but I cannot find it for $199 ( for pickup in Sydney ), just wondering if you have seen it anywhere recently?

      • Ryobi is cheap crap now. Go Japanese quality. Get an ECHO whipper snippet.about $220

      • I'm in the market right now. and basically came down to 2 brands when reading reviews Stihl and Echo.
Stihl is not the brand it was is my thoughts, and think their quality has gone down in recent years.
Echo has a 5 year warranty compared to Stihls 1 year to me that speaks volumes. Echo have faith in their product Stihl do not. Husqvarna seems to have a decent product but have has 2 product recalls recently and the reviews i read showed some very poor customer service.
Currently have a Ryobi it's seals leak, it vibrates too much and the line jams constantly plus it's hard to start.

Spend 50% more and get a better product. I like your thinking.

I like my STIHL FS38 which often go on special for $199

    • +3

i have one of those, does a great job. i also got the fixed blade for it and that hammers all sorts of chunky weeds, small shrubs, lost children etc…

      • +3

        lost children etc…

I found 3 last time when clearing around the compost bin… Pests….

Another vote for Stihl. It craps on Echo (which Psygnosis recommended above for $229. Stihl FS38 is currently $199: http://www.stihl.com.au/STIHL-Products/Grass-Trimmers-Brushc…

Ryobi and "best" in the same sentence !!

What did you smoke last night OP ?

What did you smoke last night OP ?

      weeds ??

  • Many people don't need one of these for anything else but edging lawn grass… Damn you guys carry on sometimes.

    • +1

for anything else but edging lawn grass

That's exactly what I do with my line trimmer. What do you do with yours, wash the car?

      • I use it as a pole pruner, and edging tool.

        • For that I have a pole saw and an edger

There is even brag value in lawn equipment it seems Marto… :-( zzzzzz!!

  • I have a Kawasaki Brushcutter (48cc) so its pretty big, and with a blade attachment can take out lantana, six foot tall guinea grass and small shrubs on my 7 acre tropical forest near Cairns. It is solidly built and will last a lifetime as opposed to the cheap bunning's offerings.

I wouldn't touch a 2 stroke. If you want to fart around with mixing in oil fine but I prefer a 4 stroke any day!!! Had a mate at work asking what to get, I said get a 4 stroke and he got a 2 stroke. a few days later he is whining about having to mix the oil.

    • +3

he is whining about having to mix the oil.

yeah, it's really annoying to waste that 1 minute each time i do the lawns…

    • +1

Jokes?? I hope so… Mix up 5 litres of 2-stroke and see how long it takes you to use it? I mixed up 3 litres about a month ago and I'm still using it after about 7 tanks of fuel. Total time to mix 1 minute. I can't imagine forking out for a 4 stroke because people are that lazy?

      • The extra cost of a 4 stroke if any will be recouped easily. 2 strokes use a lot more fuel and even the oil has a cost.

        • You guys are the funniest jokers. 2 strokes use more fuel? Haha Lol. My two stroke uses 5L fuel per year. That's $7 per year. Even if fuel was free how does the extra cost of a 4 stroke get recouped?

I think you are just regurgitating the words of the sales person who sold you the 4 stroke. You know, the one who got the extra bonus for selling the more expensive equipment. I bet after they convince each sucker to 'upgrade' to a 4 stroke they go to the back room and high five each other

oh and you've also forgotten the extra servicing that 4 strokes require. How much do you pay to have your oil changed? I'm assuming you don't do it yourself because you're too lazy to mix your own fuel

      • You're right mixing the fuel is trivial and a 2-stroke for the same power output should be lighter than a 4-stroke.
I find the biggest issue is getting the line out of the spool. I typically spend half an hour actually edging and half an hour getting the line out of the spool.
Anybody know what the best bump feed is for a line trimmer?

        • Buy a tanaka style alloy head. Costs approx $10 on eBay. Once you know how to load the line on it (very simple) you'll find this one is great.

Lolz…must be Gen Y, How many coffees you mix a day? Sorry you probably buy your chai lattes

$129 Homelite 25cc from Bunnings, cheap with 2yrs warranty can't go wrong! I have one and it works just fine.
    http://www.bunnings.com.au/homelite-25cc-split-shaft-line-tr…

    • For anyone else, I would highly recommend paying the bit extra and getting the straight shaft version.

I previously had the cheaper curved shaft which easily broke. Got a refund under warranty and upgraded.

    • can't go wrong

      famous last words

    • I bought one of those from recommendation in he choice magazine.
It's rather good for a cheap one. Was expecting it to fall apart after a while, but it's still going strong 6 months later.

    • I bought this one http://www.bunnings.com.au/homelite-25cc-petrol-brush-cutter… a while back when it was on special for $97 i think it was. Easy to start every time

      • +1
        Homelite would be my choice.
No brag value but they work better than most others and keep on working.

  • Sorry to hijack your thread OP,but while we are on same page just getting input for Hedge Trimmer as well.
Any recommendation for Hedge Trimmer folks?

  • +2

This is not even on special? What is the point of this ?

And yeah, my last ryobi trimmer was so bad I got a full refund without hesitation . This one's probably not bad, but too expensive. I paid $100 on special for my generic key start. Now that was a bargain just for the novelty.

Ryobi was the biggest piece of junk i ever bought! Would get it again even if it was FREE!

  • +1

I have a ryobi line trimmer similar to this. in 8 years in has not given me 1 ounce of trouble and it was only $99 - it can be bought for $79 now. excellent value for money

I purchase one of these last week.. it was hard to find as most stores are out of stock?

Friend was told masters are restocking this item this week as he is trying to locate one.

its made by husqvarna and cant complain for a 30cc for $99

  • +3

Ok I own one and would not recommend it to my enemies…it vibrates so badly that it will help you develop some kind of disease down the track..Paid around $160 mark….my previous $99 yellow Talon was miles better and lasted 5 years.

  • Agree that Stihl is better no doubt! I've had a Ryobi 26cc trimmer (possibly previous model) for last 6 years and worked it fairly hard and often. No problems at all. Like all 2-stroke engines, they can last and perform well if properly cared for and "understood". I'd buy another Ryobi trimmer (if a Stihl wasn't in the same price range at the time.
