  • I need some extra cash, this is a good price especially with no stopover.

Baggage $35, food $24 and booking fee $12.50 not included. Seat selection fee $7, entertainment $15, comfort pack $10. All prices one way per person.

    • +2

I believe you can just not select a seat and it will put you in any? I haven't tried booking for a while though.

All of those except the booking fee are optional (except I thought you can pay by POLi or something to get no fee). Either way, most people will want at least baggage. Aeroplane food is always a rort.. Just take sandwiches or something.

      • +4

I totally agree - ditch all the optional extras that you can if at all possible.
I never pay for seat selection - not bothered where they put me. I do check in online early as possible though as that tends to get you closer to the pointy end.
There are ways of not paying booking fees - use POLI with jetstar, use your qantas cash mastercard debit card to pay for tiger flights etc. All free to use (poor qantas - they must hate me)
Take your own food (though to be honest on air asia the meals are only $5 and decent so I tend to get those).
Entertainment pack - tablet of laptop or even phone with podcasts etc. I usually sleep anyway (but noise cancelling headphones are something I wish I had discovered years earlier - a true must have for me now)
Comfort pack - I've never bothered. I laughed when air asia started renting out blankets.
Even baggage I tend to just go carry on - a good quality carry on case that is strong and light hold more than enough essential clothes and a laptop bag for all the other bits. It also means not waiting around collecting bags all the time. It's easy enough to do washing while OS or buy a few extra things if needed.

So usually I add nothing to my base flight costs unless I am planning a longer trip or want to book an extra bag to bring home with some goodies. I'd rather use the money while I am there to take a tour etc.

I also have a strong preference for Air Asia over Jetstar, but in a pinch I use them. I did MEL-KUL, KUL-KIX, HND-KUL, KUL-MEL recently on Air Asia for $550 (stayed for about a week in KL before a wonderful time back in Japan.

        • Can you recommend a good carry-on bag/case? I've been meaning to buy a new one…

        • I spotted a really nice Heys roll-on carry-on case at Costco in Melbourne last week. It was $40, which seems quite good, and about 2.4kg (I think).
But there was an even lighter one next to it, soft-sided, which was STUPIDLY light. It might not last longer than a couple of years but it was pretty cheap, about $25 (I think) and could be worth it to pack more in without paying for it. Looked promising…

  • All the sites around say Japan in July isn't that great. Can anyone with experience elaborate?

    • +8

It's ridiculously hot and muggy, so if you're not used to that type of weather, you're in for a terrible time. It's really easy to feel ill and lethargic.

      • +3

Have lived and worked in Japan twice and can confirm, July is very, very hot and muggy in most places unless you go north or are on the islands to the south perhaps (have never been down past Kyushu).

I would be packing very light cotton clothes, or if you are normal sized, picking some summer stuff up from Uniqlo when you get there.

Was there in July las year and it was great! Humidity very high with summer at its peak equals lots of sweating. Remember that Mount Fuji opens for climbing in July and closes in August. Okinawa beaches were the best during this period. In Tokyo, the summer together with some sushi/sashimi plus loads of biru (beer) were priceless (of course there is a price and very expensive one!). Always ensure you carry At least a liter of water.

      • where do you recommend to stay in okinawa?

I stayed at Best Western Naha Inn (ensure you book a room in a non-smoking floor)! It is about 10 min by monorail from the bus terminal, a block away from a monorail station, 15 min walk to the main shopping street in Naha, 7-Eleven style shop in the same block and just need to get the monorail to get to the Naha airport. At least I had a good experience staying there.

    • Yeah, it's a terrible time to go for tourism, way way way too hot and humid.

    • Also, it's summer holiday in northern hemisphere, more people at tourist attractions, more people at airports…

    • It's pretty hot and fairly humid (not in the league of Singapore and Malaysia though) but I personally didn't think it was that bad that i couldn't do anything or it inhibited anything. Temps are usually low to mid 30s which isn't that bad but the strength of the sun is much less than in Melbourne and Sydney.
As a bonus, you won't need to take any heavy clothing!

    • Best time to go to Japan is around Winter when its very cool, with snow and did I mention awesome Christmas decorations at Disneyland. Oh yeah and no rain.

Great price for a direct flight, I've paid less with air asia ex SYD, but not direct. Having been to Japan many times, I'd strongly urge people to avoid the months of July and August. Unrelentingly hot, even by Australian standards….. a mistake I'll never make again.

So the humidity would make it feel more like an aussie 40 degree day or thereabouts?

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm a teacher so these dates and rates are perfect, even if it is warm (we don't mind). Booked in!

    • April school holiday is perfect. Not too hot, not too cold, AND beautiful cherry blossoms everywhere. (But I'm not too sure about price,)

      • Cherry blossom season and peak ski season usually don't have the best airfares, unfortunately.

If you were going to stay a while, you could go while it's cheap before cherry blossoms (feb) and stay until after the cherry blossoms finish and come back on a cheap flight in may-june :)

  • a road trip through Hokkaido is fine in july/aug

  • July sounds great, love the hot weather.

We are going to Japan! Cheers OP

    • Hit us up if you need suggestions. If you have a decent amount of time, check out the JR train passes. Probably the best (only) real deal available in Japan. At the very least it saves you faffing about buying tickets every time.

      • Thanks man. I've been before - but open to tips! Accommodation and day trips outside of Tokyo

    • My pleasure!

  • June, July is a terrible time to go to the Southern(Osaka, Tokyo Tec) half of Japan, crazy humid, lots of rain and really really hot for the rest of the time.

  • Leaving this friday.. I'm told to expect 10-20 degrees C. Is it actually going to feel cold though (from the above comments maybe it wont?)
