This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

        That's been renamed. Referral link structure is still the same. Can you confirm what the referrer gets? Seems the referee gets 8% off.

          Looks like referrer gets $30 in form of a promo code. Up to 5 times.

          Terms & Conditions:
          1. New users who have received an invitation can enter their email address on the promo page to receive one promo code used to save 8% on a hotel booking made using the Trip.com app. Each new user is eligible to receive one promo code.     Hi,
    The referral link description for Cashrewards should be changed to:
    $5 for both the referrer and referee, after referee makes first purchase of $20 or more within 90 days.

        According to T&Cs on Cashrewards:

    Just reporting that CUA referral link does not seem to work anymore. When you click on it says “you don’t have permission for this asset”. I presume as the referral system is no longer working. Can the referral link be removed. Or not if I have gotten this wrong.

    Its a site where you answer surveys and get rewarded with cash. Not sure if that type of site is allowed here but thought I would see if it's ok. I have been answering survey and have been getting paid out but saw that they hey have a referral program.

          We've discussed it and I think it's probably OK to accept any site that has a referral system as long as it meets our criteria of adding into the system.

          • Surveyz benefits referrers and referees. So OK to have in the system.
          • Octopus Group only benefits the referrer so won't be adding it.

              @alexshel: Our criteria for adding stores into the referral system are as follows:

              • Both the referrer and referee benefit from the referral scheme.
              • If only the referrer benefits, then there needs to be a least a deal posted on OzBargain.

              As you can see, Superloop is extremely popular so it meets the 2nd criteria.

              How about a deal post for the referral system itself? Well that's covered in our Deal Posting Guidelines: Affiliate & Referral Links:

              Can I post a deal for the Referral offer itself?

              • If the retailer offers a referral program, you may post it as a deal (e.g. signup to ABC site via referral code and earn $10 credit) if all of the following conditions are met:
              • The referee also earns credit.
              • The current offer has NOT been posted as a deal previously.
              • It's a limited time referral offer or it's a new addition to the OzBargain referral system (added less than 7 days ago).

              As Octopus only benefits the referrer then a deal can't be posted. Also, the store is currently banned for SPAM.

              We are continuing to evolve the referral system. Keep in mind it started with people spamming comments, then evolved to user edited wiki pages, then to an automated referral system.

            @neil: In Chrome, I pressed CTRL-F and entered "quad". It did not find anything - it didn't find the heading.

            If I found and opened the "Quad Lock Australia" heading manually and then did a search on "quad", it would find the content only.

            For some reason, chrome find does not find the headings which isn't good.

    I see gocashback had been suggested earlier but it is not on the list. Here is some more information that may help.

    When I click on the OzBargain referral link for GoCashBack, it brings us directly to the GoCashBack main page (as the OzB referral link with the referrer code brings us to the GoCashBack main page).

    When I then click on sign up on the GoCashBack main page, the screen below appears and we need to enter the referrers code. Because when we click on the OzB referral link, it goes directly to the GoCashBack main page, I can’t see the referrers code. Can we get this looked at so we could see the referrers code.     Given the (fairly) imminent ordering of Tesla Model 3 in Australia, I foresee a lot of demand for referral codes as these will provide 5000 free supercharger miles (or the equivalent in KM) to the referrer and referee. This needs to be entered at ordering time and will reduce to 1000 miles (or the equivalent in KM) at 28th of May, so having a place to enter referrals before ordering opens would be very useful.

      It works however the app doesn't notify you nor shows you how much credit you have. Only when you go to checkout on an order will it start to subtract referral credits.

          I actually accumulated quite a few. Tried it recently and seems they've wiped whatever referral credit was there. Not sure if they are tracking the codes from OzBargain, if the credit expires after x amount of time or what. Hard to really know with such an opaque system they have.
