User-Submitted Referral Code/Link Requests & Updates

Original Post

This morning we pushed out a new user-submitted referral changes. This is an update to the previous attempt in 2012. Problem with the previous one is that it's difficult to add new stores that support referral benefits, and the feature ended up only supporting GreenManGaming and not being used much by our users here. What happened afterwards were wiki pages created for each online shop. Yes it's an interesting use of the wiki pages, but

  • Not a good idea to let any member to be able to edit everyone's code.
  • Free-form might not be the most ideal format, and hard to police everyone to edit in the same format.
  • The list is ordered rather than randomised.

What we have done now is having a single place for you to put in all your referral codes. Go to your Settings page and click on the referrals tab. You should be presented with a list of "stores" that we currently have referral support. For the comprehensive list of stores / products supported, please go to the referral wiki page.

New ones should be easily added as well if the method of referral is via a referral link (i.e. unique URL per referrer). Feel free to submit new ones in the comments. I need

  • The URL format for the referral link
  • Instructions to get the referral link
  • Benefit for the referrers and referees.

Another reminder that Affiliate Links and Referral Links are different and we do not allow affiliate links here on OzBargain.

Once a referral system has been set up for that domain, for every deal posted to that domain, a grey box will appear below the content and above the Share buttons containing a randomised referral link AND OP's referral link (if OP has submitted one for that domain and the deal has hit the front page vote minimum - updated 9/5/16). The benefits for the referrers and referees are also shown so people know what they (and you) are getting. For example this Amaysim offer I submitted. In this case including your own referral link and link to wiki becomes redundant.

Yes this is still in beta and needs improvement. Some potential issues / possible improvements:

  • Since you do not really need to put referral link in your content, you can submit deals with your link in the referral box without the deal being marked as "referral post". This might lead to abuse of people posting excessive deals from the stores offering referral. I shall look at ways to prevent it. I don't want to mark them as referral post at the moment because previously submitter can pick and choose whether to include his/her referral link. Now it's always included. 9/5/16 Update: Your deal must hit the front page vote minimum (currently 30) to show. This was previously 5, before being changed to the front page vote minimum.

  • Referral-code / coupon-code type referrals are not yet supported. For example Budget Direct, Rabobank, etc. We can potentially generate a popup containing the code when people click on "OP" or "random".

  • A good idea to let people pick and choose? For example some people might not want to use OP's referral link, not a random one either but from a list of friends.

So here it is. Give it a try guys! I will start removing some of the wiki pages later today. Meanwhile, please leave feedback in the comments.

If your comment is automatically unpublished due to the referral link, do not worry, moderators can still see it and will republish it before replying.

What is the referral grey box keyed off? Associated store? What happens with multiple stores?

    I've asked:
    * here 7 hours 50 min ago
    * read Referrals - OzBargain Wiki
    * read Referr

I know this is asking more then once but it's asking different people who've subscribed to different threads. I want this answered before (8) 4 x $40 Belong Starter Kit $47.76 ($11.94 Each) Delivered @ Mobileciti - OzBargain hits the front page as it's not showing the grey box despite having belong as the assoiated store (along with mobileciti).

    • It won't hit the front page as it is out of stock and Belong is not an associated store. Associated store is the name after "@".
Why is this bothering you so much by the way?

      • -2

Please click through the link and you'll see there are two associated stores: MobileCiti and Belong.

It was previously a screenshot and manually associated with Belong.com.au but now it's linked directly to the mobileciti store page.

As to why it bothers me so much I thought that's obvious. If you were cynical, you'd say just because I'm more likely to get credit if I hit the front page. If you were more optimistic, you'd say because more Ozbargainer's would know about the credit and thus get $20 credit saving. Assuming there's 10% of 300 who are new and would use the referrer that's 30 * $20 or $600 credit the community would save.

        • Seems like the ozbargaun community is more cynical then optimistic. Was it a rhetorical question or better off answering in DM?

          • @brisdaz: You are 100% correct. Nothing wrong with your comment but got negged. Bunch of old farts living in the past I reckon. Bring on the negs haha

  • Can you add Sticker Mule please? https://www.stickermule.com/au/account/invite

  • Hi

Is it possible to add Healthpost to the referral programme?
The referrer gets $5 in Rewards for every new referral who makes their first purchase & they get $5 off.
    My link is https://bit.ly/2FClAq8

    • Are they creating referral links through bit.ly?

      • yes - seems to be

        • As the bit.ly link redirects to another site and then another site, this creates some issues on our side. For the time being, we won't be adding Healthpost into our referral system.

  • is it possible to add pepperleaf?
referrers get $20 and new signups get $20 as well

Is it possible to add Independent Reserve to the referral programme

    • What does the referrer and referee get? Found it:

earn a 50% revenue share of all brokerage fees paid by the person you invite for the first 90 days.

Given only the referrer gains and there are no deals posted for that site, at this point we won't be adding that site.

  • Site Suggestion: Some more clarity on how the random referral link system works i think would be good. Instead of just having the referral link at the bottom of a post in the current format:

    REFERRAL LINKS
    Email: >< random (#)
    Description

Instead you could have the following:

    REFERRAL LINKS
And a short explanation - something like: "OzBargain has a referral system designed to share referrals equitably with the community. Below is a link that will connect you to a random ozbargainers referral code. Click it when you sign up to the service to share the savings with the community. If you want to use a specific users referral code you can PM them directly, but it is not allowed to post referral codes into deal posts or comments. Any such comments will be removed. If you wish to add you own referral code for other members to use via the randomiser, go to My Account - Settings - Referrals and add your link. For new companies to be added to the system, request an add in this forum <link>. For more information, visit the wiki."
RANDOM REFERRAL LINK: >< random (#)
    Description

    What do you think?

    • You can click the (i) icon in the top right corner of that referral box for more information/referral system explanation. Links to here. We wouldn't want to move that information to the box itself as it already takes up quite a lot of space.

      • ah, good to see that information is already on the site…. However i still think it needs to more prominent, i think the frequency of people still posting referral links is good evidence of this not being common knowledge on the site

        • That is more of a commenting issue than a referral system issue. For users doing something for the first time, such as commenting, posting or voting we implemented various warnings/popups that users must click agree to. Rather than just something in front of them that they are less likely to read.

For first time commenters they will see this above the comment form:

I have read and agree to adhere to the commenting guidelines

Users can't post until they've checked the checkbox.

          • @hamza23: I'm not sure I agree with the effectiveness of this, as similar to EULAs and T&Cs, people are used to just checking a checkbox without reading it and I'm sure that is what happens often. But the information is there at least.

It still seems the random button is very unintuitive. On a desktop the "i" link is way over the other end of the screen and doesnt get noticed. And why does it say the word "email" before random. What has emails got to do with it, its a link not an email… It all just seems unintuitive which likely causes confusion for others.

I think even one sentence after the link would make it much clearer: "Click this referral link when signing up to benefit a random member of the ozbargain community" This would take up no extra space as it could be done inline with the link and would make it much clearer what the functionality of the link was without having to click away to another page and sort through a paragraph of text.

            • @Riczter: We'll look at a better position for the 'i' link and/or if we can fit in some brief wording.

The word "email" was only on the Ratesetter referral program, to differentiate between multiple referral programs, by default and in most cases it will say "Referral" as you can see on other stores. I've removed the word "email" from Ratesetter now.

              Thanks

              • @hamza23: Sounds good. Does the site support hover tooltips that pop up. Its been a long time since I had any exposure to how websites were coded but i think it was a html5 feature. Could be an alternate option for the 'i' link, to instead change it to a hover pop up. But i'll leave it with you, thanks for you time :)

  • GoCashback uses links for referrals (gocashback.com/r/XXX) but the template for it on OB is 'Coupon Code'.

    • If you go to their registration page, it asks for referrer's email or code. When using a referral link, it doesn't appear to pass the referral onto the signup page. Their site has all kinds of issues so probably best to just use the code for now.

        Thanks

        • There are 2 different referral programs for Skrill.

          • Referred member receives $40 off their first transfer over $100. Referee also receives $40 off their next transfer.
            As per the instructions:

The referral codes look like a first and last name truncated with a number. You must do an eligible transfer to get the appropriate referral code. Referral codes that are all numbers are invalid.

          The other one is

          • 5€ in BTC for referrer and referee.

Numbers only. Alphabetic characters are for the other Skrill referral.

          • @neil: Hi Moderator,

This is the referral link from Skrill.
            https://transfers.skrill.com/smt/refer/code/shyamsunderj12

Its for Referred member receives $40 off their first transfer over $100. Referee also receives $40 off their next transfer.

            • @ssj036: OK, that's been fixed up. Basically the regex which was put in to exclude the number codes from the other program and URLs caught your name + number combo. So it was:

              [^0-9][^((?!https).)*$]

              now changed to

              ^[^0-9]\w+$

You can now add in your code.
