  • These are not pass-through sockets that can be used on very long bolts, correct?

    • Mmm not sure what you mean ?

There is a 150mm long extension arm included, so you can reach bolts that are recessed up to 6" below the turning circle of the handle.

Using 12mm as an example, there are 3 different 12mm sockets in the set:
      - 1 short (~30mm)
      - 2 long (45mm) and the recess for the bolt head is around 20mm on these - so they can handle a pretty deep bolt head

Not sure if that helps ?

System, picture an upside-down bolt with the pointy bit facing you. To get to the actual bolt head, you need a set that will allow the pointy bit to 'pass through' it before you can get to the head. That's what he means.

        • Ahh I see. I've never used one of those before but I see what you mean from the pic in that other deal.

This set is definitely not pass-through - I see that feature requires ratchet handles with holes in the middle and would definitely be written on the box and in the description.

  • I see they have deep sockets only for the 1/4" drive, and a spark plug socket which will take "long" bolts, but for "very long" bolts you need a pass-through set like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140009#comment-1934091 if you can still find one (some stores still have stock).

    No 1/2 inch, pass.

    • agreed. anyone looking to drop money on a big socket set should go for a 1/2" and 1/4" combo. also this set at 19mm upper limit is maybe a bit low, look for something up towards inch I suggest. no need for the neg on previous comment

    • This kit's on special and has a 1/2 inch drive.

      • Yeh that kit is way better. Seems overkill having the 3/8 as well, but they are basically free given the ticket price so no problems. Other things to look out for are hex design in the socket and the fineness and strength of the ratcheting mechanism. The good Stanley kit should be better than the cheaper one.
And the big breaker bar is worth its weight in gold when you need it! Think car wheel nuts

      • This kit is pretty good value really everything's there. A lot to lug around though.

  • So…did anyone actually 'socket up' and buy this? All this torque about tools is really tempting me :P

  • Awesome thanks for the post!

  • This is no screaming below cost deal, but it is good if you need a kit. I have an old version on of the stanley 3/8in and 1/4in kit and its pretty good i use alot on minor and major jobs because it so easy to move it around the car with you vs a 1/2 drive and theres little chance of snapping bolts or overtightening. That said 1/2in drive is required alot of the time. I'd hate to be stuck with 1/2in only. The spanner are another bonus. 17mm max size is pretty small would be good if they went to 24mmm. The 17mm restriction on the sockets is okay as you shouldn't be using 3/8 drive on anything bigger than that.
