    • Do a hard refresh of your browser. e.g. Ctrl + F5

      • Cheers!

      • This is probably a silly question, but how do you do a hard refresh on Chrome for android? I've cleared and reset cookies and I still have 2 avatars.

    • Because we prefer your old one.

      • The one where there's a mask covering my blue steel eyes and sexy sulky pout? 😔

    • Looks like a thumbnail caching issue on our end. It should be fixed now.

  • Is anyone else finding themselves getting logged out each time they open OzBargain lately? I'm on Android 10, running Chrome.

Is it me or is OzBargain slow and unstable under the load of Black Friday deals?

    • Yeah it's getting smashed. I just got a 404.

OzBargain is broken at the moment, and the backend will be restarted "very very soon".

    • Running slow for me

    • Soooooo slowwww

    • +1

Teenage rebellion. It partied too much last night in Sydney and Melbourne and it is smashed this morning.

    • +2

Site is actually even slower for moderators, as some of the pages we access require more db access (store pages for eg).

It takes me 2 minutes plus to edit a deal and save it, and sometimes I need to save it twice to get changes to stick, opening a store page also takes that long.

    • Very slow….

  • Yes it's slow. It's much faster browsing as guest though as most pages are cached for non-logged in users. The choke point currently is in the database (which isn't as scalable), and some people's front page customisation would make the entire site runs slowly.

    • What kind of front page customisation makes it worse?

      • Blocked users, blocked stores, different minimum votes, etc.

    • It's faster ATM.

  • Why when you delete / unpublish a comment does it redirect to a 404 ?

  • +1

You guys must've changed the CSS recently because the mobile site is just a little off, now. Extra padding, the menu's expanding into the wrong spot, the bell is no longer on the right corner etc.

    • I’ve also noticed that category tags are now purple?

    • Glad someone else noticed it, I thought it was just my browser. Cleared my cookies, cache in hopes of fixing it, no luck :)

  • +2

On internet explorer the top bar is now white instead of orange.

    • Update your browser to something more modern and supported…

I'm having similar problems using Dolphin browser in Android. Dolphin has always been the one browser that let me view Ozbargain properly in Desktop mode. Now, it seems to try to use some kind of mobile view (it initialises much more zoomed in), everything is horizontally squashed and part of the top bar not styled properly (white). What happened?

Dolphin uses a Safari core, btw. So there may be issues on Apple devices too.
Same thing happens in CM Browser on Android.

      • +1

I'm using dolphin on my iPad and had same problems as you mentioned. Seems they've fixed it in last hour or so, the site displays as it used to(desktop mode) now.

        • Yes, it's rendering properly again.

Quite a relief - for the last 5 years, my choice of mobile browser has been based on which one can render Ozbargain best :)

  • What is happening is that we are moving away from float based layout and we are emulating the existing look with flexbox on both desktop & mobile site. That means

    • Classic IE is no longer supported.
    • Most main line browsers should work, including Edge/Edge-Chromium, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.
    • Desktop mode on mobile should still work (tested on Chrome & Brave on Android).
    • Android browsers that don't use Chrome webview might not display correctly. We'll need to investigate on Dolphin & CM Browser.
    • I can confirm that iPhone in desktop mode has the same issue.

    • What about deal category tags being purple?

    • +1

I can't quite place it but on the mobile site was the menu button and all the menu items black? Either that or the font/style has been changed.

      • Menu Buttons, etc. Used to be white, I noticed it too.

        • Yep I thought so. It goes white when I tap the menu button and looks much better.

          • @Clear: Yeah, But the arrows next to forums, deals, etc. Doesn’t seem to go white?

    • +1

Classic IE is no longer supported.

      That's my primary browser! :-(

      • 1999 called, it wants its browser back..

        • Internet Explorer 11.0.9600.19597 © 2013 Microsoft Corporation

    • CSS Grid is the in-thing now! (really)

      • CSS grid makes hard things easy, but makes complicated layouts even more complicated, i.e. elements that get added / removed depending on the situation where you end up with different templates depending on the situation. We do use grid in some places, but just not for the overall page.

Anyone else noticed that 'Live' is "down" at the moment?

The page is empty on Chrome on Android and Chrome, Edgemium and IE proper on Windows I've noted, so assuming it is widespread.

    • Yes, down for me too. I tried Chrome and Waterfox and neither loads it.

    • Anyone else noticed that 'Live' is "down"

      Its dead.

      • prepare for the zombie apocalypse

    • Same here - only shows the header.

    • Yep dead for me too

      • Yep, same here using iPad. Thought it was only me so just sent them an email.

        And it’s back. Lol

    • It should be fixed now. Thanks.

      • Thanks moocher!

  • I am getting internal server errors…..

  • There seems to be an issue with the heading links (as seen here) where for some reason when clicking them it doesn’t open the link?

Note: I’m currently using an iPad on Safari.

    • They aren't really links but <a name="..."> anchor elements generated by the old wiki software. I'll fix up the styling.

      • Oh, I see, Thanks for fixing :) Also it’s a bit hard to tell the difference between OP and comment made by yourself at the moment.

  • Seems to be a problem on the new deals page where when you scroll down to load more deals it reloads some deals that were shown further up.

  • We have been having issues with sending emails to @tpg.com.au email addresses over the last couple of days. TPG's email servers have been complaining about "too many connections" every now and then since last Saturday (11 Apr). So if you are on @tpg.com.au, you might need to wait a while for your emails to deliver.

  • Our database node was offline at around 9PM on 27 April 2020. It's not reachable via either public or internal IP address, and BinaryLane's control panel was unable to reboot it. I was able to spawn a new Standard Linux VPS, installed the database, and then started copying the DB from our replication node. I suspect that there were some issues as:

    • I was not able to spawn a CPU-optimised VPS
    • Copying the database took almost an hour.

New database node is online at ~11PM. We'll likely need to move it to a more performant node later so there will be more scheduled downtime after we receive report on what's going on from BinaryLane.

    • According to our provider's report last night,

One of the disks had dropped out of the RAID array, and for some reason the host was upset by that

More investigation today, and the schedule will be migrating back Wednesday morning.

Thanks scotty for the announcement. Wonderful work on getting the site up! Appreciate all you do for keeping this place running.

  • +1

I dunno if it just me but are people finding the site intermittently very laggy/won't load. (maybe won't load on repeat attempts for 20-30 sec and then is fine). Have noticed it happen at least 2-3 times per day last few days.

    • Yes from our bandwidth graph we can see packets of dips happening throughout the day. However the load level on the backend has been consistent so I am suspecting that there's something wrong with the network. We are still investigating.

      • thanks
not a big issue. Nice to know that it is not just my connection or something.

  • I seem to have stopped getting updates to the RSS feed through Feedly today. Is RSS misbehaving?

    • +1

Disregard me - removed and re-added feed in Feedly, everything populated.

      • Thanks northirid, I was having the same problem, removed it from feedly and re-added it and it is back!

  • Nope, I am not getting the RSS feed from

    http://feeds.feedburner.com/ozbargainnew

Tried deleting and re adding, but nope….

      • Thanks, that worked…… and with 6000+ subscribers,

As opposed to my old link that only had 900 ish subs.

        Thanks again.

  • I too haven't received anything in the RSS feed for over a week. Did ozb change something or did feedly screw something up?

    • Check the comment above and make sure you have the correct RSS feed URL.

      • Yes I have been using that RSS URL for years with Feedly. Just stopped working a week or so ago. Re-added the same URL.. and it's working. I guess it was a Feedly issue.

  • Favicon missing for anyone else?

    • Nope.

      • +1

My bad, forgot I had disable cache ticked.

  • Whenever I receive a PM, even if i read it (or reply to it), it still has the little number next to the bell. I have to actually click "mark as read" - is this intended?

    • I assume so, it’s been like this for ages now (since I started using OzBargain).

    Merged from OzBargain Was down?!

The OzBargain site was down for almost 15 seconds, I feared for the worst.

    • It was also down this morning around ~7:20

    • Zombie apocalypse?!

  • OzBargain's Twitter account has been locked by Twitter and we're working on getting this resolved but may take a long time.

    • +1

      Any reason why?

      • Covid

      • Being used by Trump.

  • I have no Mark as Read little "hamburger" menu today,
    Firefox 81.0 (64 bit)
    Windows 10 64

I'm logged in and it was there yesterday

    • Should have added I'm using Dark Mode (which might still be in beta?)

      I've just found it… Centre-bottom of screen!
      Is this a deliberate change?
It's kinda good cause you don't need to scroll to the comments box to see it, but not easy to see initially.

  • Server running our redis & sphinx is offline this afternoon. Redis is now switched over to replicated node. Search & search alerts will be down until we can bring that server instance up.

    • Search & search alert should be back online now.

  • Not really an OzBargain site issue but related. Currently Gmail is reporting 550-5.1.1 hard bounce saying that the recipients do not exist, when trying to send an email to @gmail.com account. So far today we've already received ~30k bounces from Google, which might automatically trigger disabling email on OzBargain.

So if you have registered with OzBargain using an Gmail account, and have your email delivery disabled here, you might want to wait a while until Google rectify the issue.

    https://downdetector.com.au/status/gmail/

    • We have now cleared the email error flag on affected accounts with '@gmail.com' email addresses and restored newsletter subscription where applicable. Note that this doesn't cover accounts that have a non-gmail email address on OzBargain but gets redirected to gmail behind the scenes.

If your account was affected by the Gmail issues and you received an OzBargain notification about the error, please take a moment to check your account settings. (My Account-> Settings) If there is still a note about email delivery failure, there should be a 'Send verification' button next to the email address field, please click on that and follow instructions to verify.

  • Site issues: Error 502 bad gateway

  • site took an arrow to the knee

  • Scheduled update Tues 16 March 2021

There is a planned update occurring tomorrow morning where the website has to be taken offline for approximately 5 minutes sometime between 6:30am and 7:00am AEST.

    • This has been completed.

  • 15 March 2021- OzBargain App Notifications

If anyone has stopped receiving notifications from the OzBargain iOS/Android app, likely within the past 6 days, clearing the user data or uninstalling and reinstalling the app will immediately fix the issue.

As a general reminder, you will only receive notifications for sections you have selected 'web' for in the subscription tab of your settings.

Getting a lot of 502 errors tonight

    • yep

  • Today the desktop view on mobile device seems broken for me. The front page deals pane on the left seems to be super skinny in width so I can’t see anything.

Is this just me? I’ve always used desktop view with no issues before.

    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/32825/90150/1460c46a-5…

Same result using safari and chrome on the latest iOS.

    • Looks like it only happens with Desktop Site on Safari (as Chrome on iOS users the same rendering engine). The recent change was adding the meta viewport for desktop site as per Google Lighthouse recommendation but I guess it did break something somewhere.

      • I'm having the same problem on Chrome, via android. :( Any fixes?

        • Really? I have been testing desktop site on Android/Chrome without any issue. Same issue as the screenshot above, where the desktop site is not zoomed out by default resulting left column becomes too narrow?

          • @scotty: Hi Scotty. This is desktop view on iOS (iPhone Xs) Safari & Chrome in portrait for me. On the other hand landscape seems fine. No issues on iOS iPad.
