  • Thanks. My contract with them runs out in a week and they said they could only offer me a 10% discount if i stayed with them.

    • I was on a different plan started in January this year. I logged on and saw the offer. The switch was smooth. Origin doesn't charge for the switch any more, I understand.

    • My contract with them just expired. I was getting 23% off. Anyone recently managed to get more than 15%?

      • Wow! That's crazy! I was getting 17% off and i thought that was good!

        • I was told at the beginning of the year that the maximum available was 8%……….and I've been with them for years!

      • I also had the 23% which just expired, such a good deal.

Best i could manage on the phone was 8%.

If you go to http://www.originenergy.com.au/4292/eSaver it will ask you which state you are in and gives you a different offer based on how you answer so might be useful for people in other states as well.

    VIC up to 28 / 14 % off for electricity/gas
    NSW up to 15 / 8 % off for electricity/gas
    SA up to 16 / 12 % off for electricity/gas
    QLD up to 10 / 6 for % off electricity/gas

      VIC up to 28 / 14 % off for electricity/gas

It just goes to show how much they overcharge people usually…

Indeed, have to say I was surprised to see such a high number when I was gathering the info. Why not just charge correctly in the first place, avoid having to complicate matters with all these offers.

I think each one also says it's for the first year only and only when you pay in full and on time which I guess are pretty standard terms.

The % discount does not mean anything without looking at their unit pricing and daily charge rates.

  • In NSW on ELECTRICITY, it's 14%+1%.

  • +2

Worth noting that this is 15% discount on usage charges only (ie. no discount on daily supply charge).

  • In Queensland is there any company giving 15% or 10% discount on gas bill as my contract with AGL is going to end ASAP.They gave me 12% for 2 years and now they are going to lock up with contract for 2 years with 7% discount on gas usage.

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. I put together a spreadsheet comparing the various companies for electricity and gas at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126223

It's very important to understand what the percentage off is for…this is a huge deceiving trick used by companies to say you get __% off, but when it is only off the usage rates (and not the daily rate), it makes a huge difference.

  • How do existing customers get the discount? I literally signed up to an origin esaver this time last week and just called them and they said they cannot do it unless I cancel my account and reapply over internet.

    • I did it by logging into my account and changing the plan to the eSaver

  • Thanks OP!

These guys are a pain in the ass! Spent an hour on the phone with them in a robust discussion about getting the best rates, was offered max 8% discount on usage charges. Same everything else on their DailySaver. Now this comes along…

  • Ah cool. Was looking at signing up to Red Energy (10% off whole bill)/Dodo (15% off rates) now that this deal has expired.

I think I will probably stick with Origin and go with this then. Thanks OP!

  • I agree. Their customer service and approach to offering discounts is very frustrating.

  • I am off contract with these buggers and they offered me nothing to stay. I'm averaging $1300 a quarter!
Got to go, I'm on bedroom light patrol. Kids!!

I'll be onto them tomorrow for this discount.

  • Wow, just switched from Daily Saver, 10% discount to eSaver 15%. Too easy
Checked that I was getting the same tariffs and supply charges too

Also I heard on the news the energy regulator has approved a 17% increase in gas prices later this year. If the discount offered now is only 8%, it might be better to go a rate freeze plan for 24 months to lock in the tariffs

    • Yep, might be worth switching the gas to the rate freeze plan as that date gets closer. Will need to keep an eye on it. You can switch the gas plan separately and there is no dual-fuel discount anymore.

    • That's a good idea. Interestingly the base rate for 'Rate Freeze' is lower than 'eSaver'. I'll definitely consider this, given that they have now abolished their exit fees.
