Good deal for places which you can't reach by plane, but for those that can like the Sydney <> Melbourne leg you better off flying:

TigerAir ($39.95) Syd - Melb, Price Match G. with Jetstar = $36 each way

You may have to pay to get to the Airport (which should be covered by the $14 saving per way)

and wait for the plane (well you're not sitting on a train for > 10 hours …= opportunity cost)

$14 to get to the airport? You must live in the next suburb.

In any event, you're looking at substantial travel from the airport at one, or both, ends. Costs to travel by air are likely to be double these fares. Air travel definitely wins by time saved, but not by the margins some people think. Allowing for travel at both ends, plus you have to be at the airport well ahead of departure time, plus other minor delays (boarding, collecting luggage, etc), a trip from Sydney to Brisbane or Melbourne is really more like 4 hours. The luggage allowance on the train is vastly more generous as well, very handy in the cooler months, or if you're carting gifts, whatever. Plus, as others mention, the train goes places that planes just don't go to (or don't go economically).

I actually like to see the countryside when I travel, getting there is half the fun, so I have a natural preference for land transport, I guess. You can also get up and stretch your legs on the train and it's been a long time since we've completely lost one.

      • yeah live relatively close to the airport, and missed the fact usually travel with someone else and it usually costs around $30 or less.

each for their own, i know someone who is crazy for trains and may enjoy the scenery… me on the other hand try to stay off them.

we used to drive up and down to brisbane or melbourne in a car when plane were not economical it drove me crazy when the scenery was on repeat as soon as we left the city.

        Melbourne zone 1+2 $6.06
Get train to broadmeadows, get the 901 bus. It is probably about 40-50 mins extra journey plus not all hours the bus runs. There is another one that goes from Essendon station to Tullamarine but those hours are even more limited.

        Sydney train 0-10km $3.80
Sydney airport domestic, 20 minute walk on O'Riordan St, left at Bourke Road to mascot station. Train to central. Runs on same train line so extra time is only spent walking.

        $9.86 each way.

Or there is always the 400, 20 minutes with luggage in tow might not be everyone's taste.

    • +2

      Or if you have luggage.

  • Lightning Ridge sounds dangerous! I wonder where it is.

Edit: It's northern NSW in the middle of nowhere. Would be fun!

  • +4

And at Lightning Ridge you can go fossicking for opals. Might strike it rich!

    • Should be called Lightning Rich… if you don't get struck by lightning while you are out fossicking.

Wouldn't the NSW Trainlink network only extend to NSW? eg furthest you could do would be something like Wagga Wagga to Broken Hill?

  • +3

Deal includes travel to Brisbane and Melbourne. They are not in NSW.

As most passengers are on concession freebie tickets, you will likely be the only fare-paying passenger on board.

  • And when I thought this was a regular city rail tickets, would be nice to travel from townhall station to central and where I live for $50 … They should do that for 2 months.

  • If you want to come back again it is $100.

  • how much for the kids?
