Moves App Now FREE (Save $3.79) [iPhone & Android]

Android (hat tip to efgee).

I absolutely love this app. I use it every day – it has resulted in a total paradigm shift in my daily activities and fitness goals. Who needs a $200 Fitbit when you can just install this powerful app?

N.B. This app can still be downloaded & used on iOS 6.

Description

Moves automatically tracks your everyday exercise, commuting and time spent in important places. Just carry your phone in your pocket or bag.

NEW IN MOVES 2.5: A Complete Exercise Diary!
• Over 60 new activity types
• New activities are not (yet) automatically recognized, but easy to add

FEATURES
• Automatically tracks walking, cycling and running
• Recognizes the places in your daily life
• Shows your day as a simple storyline
• Plots your routes on a map
• Step counter (pedometer)
• Calories burned for each activity
• Support for the M7 co-processor in iPhone 5s

More features available from the Connected Apps catalog.

BENEFIT
Seeing your everyday life in a new way can motivate you to move more. Set simple goals (e.g. 10,000 steps a day) and start with small changes that can lead to a fitter lifestyle and healthier habits.

BATTERY CONSUMPTION
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Moves has been designed to use GPS and other sensors sparingly. The app relies mostly on acceleration data, cell tower and Wi-Fi locations. The Battery Saving Mode will further minimize battery consumption when stationary in a place.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT IOS 7
Moves needs to run continuously in the background to track your activities:
Ensure that you have BACKGROUND APP REFRESH turned ON for Moves (iPhone Settings > General > Background App Refresh)

    Interesting.

Just acquired by Facebook as well.

How about the Android version? Anyone know if that is also free?

    • +12

      Yep:

      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.protogeo.m…

Surely 'acquired by fb' is a negative, given their utter disrespect for personal privacy.
No mention of heartrate monitor support

      • +9

I was going to get this until you mentioned that Facebook has acquired it. This is giving FB access to your entire life in regards to what you do and where you are. It will be a goldmine for FB. No need to 'check in' anywhere since FB will already know

        • For those of you that use the Moves app – the Moves experience will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook.

          http://www.moves-app.com/press

        • +11

Given Facebook's woeful record I'm struggling to treat this press release with any credibility.

        • +4

" there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook" - that's a typically-American weasel-worded piece of marketing spiel.

The moment that Facebook's overseers (and its chums in the NSA or the Aus-equivalent tax-eating degenerate parasites) decide that they want your "Moves", they will simply "commingle" the phuq out of whatever data they want.

Closed source, and owned by Facebook? This guarantees that "Moves" never sees the inside of my phone.

        • Woeful record? Could you give an example?

        • +3

There are no plans currently. In six months they will have the plans ;-)

      • People really get on the "ARGHHH MY PRIVACY!" bandwagon when talking about Facebook…

        1) Most of the stories about them are false or exaggerated.
        2) You gave the personal information to them in the first place.
        3) No one cares where you buy your adult toys.

        • +6

          1) Nope

          2) Nope

          3) As someone who's worked in digital marketing using contextual advertising all I can say is: don't kid yourself.

      • So, if I carry a WiFi-only Android device, am I safe?

…or does this puppy save & send later?

(I guess one could always run it only in a totally disconnected device…. ;-)

        • So, if I carry a WiFi-only Android device, am I safe?

It requires GPS. But, yes, you could run it on a totally disconnected device otherwise.

        • You could use whatever firewall method takes your fancy (I like the app known as Droidwall) takes your fancy to prevent it from making any connection at all. I don't know how firewalling works on iOS but I'm assuming it's just as easy.

    • +5

but you'll be well positioned when FB releases it's new premium-app which tracks how fat our ex-boy/girlfriends have become!

  • Would it use much cellular data? I've only 1gb/month

    • +1

      and what about battery life?

      • +3

read the reviews, it appears to suck lots of juice from your phone battery.

    • +1

Nope – I've had it installed for months and it's only consumed 9.8 MB.

Battery life obviously does decrease, but I haven't found it to be too bad – YMMV though, as I have an iPhone 5s, which means I can enable Battery Saving Mode.

    • +8

The problem with this approach is it becomes trivially easy for FB to re-identify you. They don't actually care if your name is Tarquin Fauntleroy, they want to know your connections and inter-connections so they can get inside your head for marketing, research, political manipulation etc. Pseudonymity has a place, but be aware that it only adds a tiny speed hump to the machine.
Think about Coles/Woolies. They don't really care if I scan my everyday rewards card if I am paying on CC, they can still string my purchases together. And align them with data they collect when I get a web quote for their car or house insurance.
I reckon they know more about me than my parents.

      • +1

Why is relevant advertising scary though?

Please tell me what the absolute worst thing that can be done with your data is…? The worst thing you have said so far is that you get an accurate quote for insurance without having to type in information…and hey, Mother's Day is coming up - buy some flowers and go see your mum, you!

Note: the distinction between data and information is relevant here.

    • I'm not really sure why you think having a name that isn't you're own does anything for your privacy on Facebook.

    • +1

Yeah, that'll fool their meta-data analytics systems.

    • And I ADORE cheese

rule for the net - if it is on the web it is utterly public, no matter how much security or imagined obscurity you think protects it
If you dont want something public, dont put it on the web. Other protocols vary but the web is public.

  • +2

Reviews say it's a battery hog, but could be worth a try.

  • +2

I used this for a month but had to remove it as the battery consumption was enormous. I've got an iPhone 4S, so a newer phone might be better, but I got sick of having to charge my phone several times a day. Apart from that the app works great and does what it states re tracking your movement. (To be fair, I've tried all the IOS pedometer apps I could find, and they were all power hogs. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Fitbit ).

  • Has it always been free on android? As other has said, it drains your battery.

I have been using pedometer: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.ped….

  • Anyone else not able to download this for IOS 6? I tried both my US and Australian iTunes account, and do not get the same pop-up the OP has shown?? It just says, you must update to iOS 7 :( Any ideas?

    • +5

      Update to IOS 7.

    • What he said.

    • You could try downloading it into iTunes on your computer, then downloading it on your iOS device from Purchased – that's what I incidentally did, since my iOS 6 device isn't my primary one anymore, so perhaps that's something…

  • +4

Over hyped, say good bye to your battery life, acquired by fb.

    No thank you.

  • +8

I've binned facebook and reverted to talking to my friends.

  • +2

On android this has always been free. I've had it for months and its great.

  • +1

Will affect battery life ? A lot?

    • +3

      Yes..

  • Android people,

My friend tried to get this app with his Note 2. He received a message that his device was not supported.

    Any info. on this problem?

    Thanks.

    EDIT:
From the Google Play Store of course.

    • It means that his device is not supported.

      • +2

        Yes, and this is why:

        Accelerometer problem on Android
Moves uses the phone's accelerometer to recognize activities and steps. Unfortunately some Android phones aren't capable of using the accelerometer when the screen is off. Samsung Galaxy Note II is the most popular model that is unable to run the accelerometer in the background.

  • I used moves on my Nexus 5 a couple of months ago (Was free). Good App but battery usage was too high for me. Now use simple but good free app called Pedometer by Thomas Hoffmann. It used no battery as uses the built in step counter of Nexus5.

    • +1

Fair enough – I still use it because it does much more than simply count steps. I'm willing to sacrifice the small amount of battery it consumes because I find the features worthwhile. I also have a 12,000 mAH portable battery always with me.

  • +1

nexus 5 - program is a whore that just keep on sucking.

edit: still nice post. i like free things.

  • +3

Seriously at first when I saw the picture, I thought it has something to do with Motorola.
Anyway thanks for the good apps.

    • No worries mate!

  • +1

This app is awesome. Two days in and loving it. I don't see an obscene drain to the battery life either. Thanks for the post :)

    • Glad someone likes it! Yes that's what I found too – it's become part of my daily usage now :)

  • +1

Thanks, have been looking for something like this!

    • You're welcome! :)

  • +2

That didn't take long for Facebook to destroy any sense of privacy.

The privacy policy has already been changed and they are now sharing whatever they want to whoever they want really.

    http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/05/05/after-facebook-deal-m…

    • +1

just exported my data and deleted the app. good riddance. Now I have to figure out a way to get rid of whatsapp

  • Sadly I didn't like this app much. Appreciate the OP's efforts, though.

Not sure if there was a conflict but I used it on a Galaxy Note 3, causing massive battery drain with no settings modified. No other apps or changes to usage patterns during the test.

  • +1

I loved this app for the few days I had this - between this deal and Moves changing their privacy policy. It didn't drain too much on my battery, the design was great and it was fun. I've since exported my data, deleted the app and replaced it with Breeze by Runkeeper which is just as good if a bit more gimmicky.
