Apple MD387X/A Mac Mini (2.5GHz i5) - $626.40 Store Pick up or $646.35 Delivered @ JB Hi-Fi

100

I've been looking to buy a Mac Mini for about a week and decided to bite the bullet at JB as it was on for about $680 a couple of days ago which was still cheaper than most and the RRP of $749, but today I see that the price is now only $626.40 I am guessing as a result of their 10% sale, but this is a great price by a LONG way by my reckoning?

I note it comes with Mountain Lion whereas the Apple Store version has Mavericks, but as the upgrade is free now, thought it's worth the saving, no?

Store pick up in 2-5 days, I can live with that.

Thought I'd share, it's been a while!

This has ivybridge cpu(late 2012) doesn't it? Though I think it is still the latest model as there is no haswell mac mini yet.

As is always the case, there's always something better about to be released, however if you have a need for it now, then yes it is a good price for a good machine.

  • Yeah pretty much, you could wait for a Haswell or Broadwell refresh but at a higher cost, most likely. Would be a decent machine if you chucked an SSD in there and upgraded to Mavericks to get the OSX experience.

    • It will come with Mavericks most probably. Although it is an old machine they keep the OS up to date. It's free anyway and you get the OSX experience with any version os OSX that they include ;-)

      • This will definitely come with the latest version of OS X. Even if it didn't come with Mavericks, which I am certain it does, Apple has stopped charging for OS upgrades in April 2013.

Regarding the SSD, OSX is generally faster than Windows and is less prone to bloat, so it may be unnecessary depending on what you're going to do with it.

    • Link says $675. Apologies, once added to cart it comes down.

    • I got a refurb for my daughter about a year ago, just b4 the price hike. Its been great. On hesitation I'd have buying today is an update may be very soon.

  • It's a good deal. I gave it my vote. Thanks, OP.

In true OZbargain spirit, I have to say that it would be cheaper to build your own Hackingtosh by following Tonymac86's guide.

Alternatively, buying a cheap mini PC and triple boot it with Windows, OSX and Linux.

The only disappointing thing about the Mac mini apart from this model's "longevity" is that its RRP was $699 a year ago before the sneaky price adjustment, so in a way I feel cheated.

I bought a refurb I7 this week, replacing a 5 year old iMac.

Rock solid OS on good hardware lasts a long time. I had to upgrade the iMac to 8gig when Mavericks came out. I expect that in 3 years time maybe I would have to upgrade the ram in the Mac mini as well. Longevity makes Apple devices really worth the money.

    • Totally agree my wife is still using a 24" imac Core2duo for photoshop and other work, its been running the same OS since day one and I only just installed Mavericks on it last week and its back to being lightning fast again (not that it was a slouch before) worth every dollar. Did that i7 show up on the refurb site or did you call Apple about unlisted stock?

  • Refurb store, i'd been watching and waiting. The quad cores don't come up so often. i'm adding Ram right away in the end as i want to run multiple vm sessions and i need more ram for that. Ebay of course Apple ram is overpriced
