    Proper link

    http://www.oo.com.au/Sony-BDP-S5100-Wi-Fi-Blu-ray-D_P236467.…

Since the OP cant be bothered not changing it from the mobile site.

    • +1

That link actually shows stock, well done!

  • Use a boxing bag next time, don't take your frustrations out on these poor little cartons!

  • +2

    Cinavia, no thanks.

    • With the stock firmware (and maybe later ones too), it isn't checked for when playing off a USB or through DLNA.

      • I assume you have this model — do you know if there's a way to get the Web Browser to appear in the BDP-S5100 menu ? I have all the other internet apps working fine, but no still browser icon (which I have seen working in overseas models).

  • +3

    Use joy20 for $20 off!

  • +2

Also, don't forget about the current $20 discount (joy20) on oo.com.au (cudos to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143714).
Coupled with the current FREE DELIVERY campaign, meant I picked one of these up for my folks (upgrade from VCR!), delivered for just shy of $60.
    Thanks OzBargain, and thanks OP.
(edit: looks like I was beaten to the post by allan0102. good work!)

    • +1

      Too much typing :P

  • Thanks mady123, allan0102 and samd for the discount code.

    Have a nice day

    Kind regards

  • Thanks guys..ordered one as my old bd died

  • I missed out on getting one of these when they were $99 from the Sony store earlier this year (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132868), so I grabbed one of these straight away, thanks OP!

  • just tried to get one appears to be sold out

  • Deal Deal Deal !!!

  • Yep. All gone…..

    • Sigh… Saw this on my phone and rushed out of bed to buy. Sold out a minute earlier.. :C

      Missed out last time too.

  • According to OO, there will be more stock from 10am:

The product for exclusive early access is sold out.
More stock will be available after 10 AM.

    • At what price though? Hopefully remains the same.

Great find by the way earth!

  • thanks will try again then

  • I tried to get one earlier, but couldn't work out where to put the code, so missed out. I bought the Sony $99 one, but would like a backup.

  • +7

Do they have to bash the boxes first before they release the 10 AM Batch ??????

  • Darn missed out..maybe some more at 10am?

  • if you missed out, you can get gift vouchers to save $20 for every $70 spent (or part thereof) (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/143791)

I think this model is also blu-ray region free…

    • -1

A sony model that's br region free? If that's true it was a mistake lol, I thought Sony were staunchly against region free players - which is why Toshiba had a few to stick it to them.

Maybe they have just lightened up a bit

      • No such thing as a region free player.

        • Not quite true , there are many devices and tricks around getting a device to be region free, but as a blanket statement "there are no region free players" is wrong

        • -3

No device can be made to be regions free.

          No trick, no anythings.

(Of course, as stated earlier/later some drives are capable of switching regions).

        • facepalm you really should not be giving people advice if you have no clue what you are talking about which evidently you don't, though I would welcome your attempt! I do need something to read on my lunch break…. :)

        • -3

I know exactly what I am talking about.

Perhaps you ought to spend your lunch READING the internets. You may obtain an understanding of what regions mean when when it comes to blu-rays.

          Or remain ignorant, your choice.

      • I should say this model COULD be region free. Some websites show it is, some don't…

Can anyone shed any more light?

        • Bluray players to be 'region free' need to be able to be switched between regions.

          Can this one?

          Don't know.

    • +1

No such thing and never has been.

(You need a player that can switch between regions).

      • -1

Too quickly to press Neg button, don't ya?

        http://www.regionfreedvd.net/reviews/review-sony-bdp-s5100.h…

        • I didn't neg anyone.

And it's not region free; no such thing.

Your link says 'region free capable' which implies it might be switchable between regions.

        • The regions on bluray inform different functionality of the Blu-ray Disc. This mean that different functions are possible in different regions. Ie. the features of the Blu-ray Disc vary between regions.

No player can just read a Blu-ray Disc and take into account this different functionality between regions on the fly.

That's why a bluray player needs to change its region before playing a disc.

So there may well be multiple region playing bluray players but not region free bluray players.

        • Maybe my question was incorrect.

I believe this model currently on offer is capable to switching multiple region natively.

Some model can't even allow you to that.

My question or contribution for this forum for the benefit of all is that whether this model is capable to do that natively?

I am slightly concerned a genuine question/contribution attract neg votes but if this may matter for some people…

    • +1

Let me answer everyones question about this once and for all, as I own/use this player.

      DVD Region Free: YES

      BluRay Region Free: NO!

It's not possible to switch regions at all for Bluray content. The best you will get is a multiregion Bluray DISC, like some of the American ones that also support European regions. You can't change the player to suit.

But for DVD playback, its region free.

  • +1

This model (as sold in Australia) IS REGION FREE SO FAR AS DVDs ARE CONCERNED.

As to the playing of Blu-Ray disks - NO of course it is not 'Region Free'.

I understand that there is a hardware modification available to allow one to play Blu-Ray disks from other regions. However, it would be better/cheaper to just purchase another player.

We have this SONY model, and a friend also has one.

    • Thank you. That clears it up!

    • there are a few sites, such as this:
      http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/sony-bdp-s5100/12108
that offer codes (typically requiring a OneForAll remote) to enable region free playback on hundreds of different Bluray players, but so far the BDP-S5100 doesn't have any working codes.

there are also numerous etailers selling this model as region free, which implies that codes exist for this model (or using some other hardware\flash modification). however, the inflated cost is often 2-3times the price you can find the player elsewhere — therefore at this point in time, it is still cheaper to buy multiple players; as there are only 3 Bluray regions (A\1, B\2, C\3, you need only buy 3 players and you can play discs from any region.

also note, Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney (and most porn studios) reportedly release most of their discs as region free.

  • still sold out :(

  • How was the boxes damaged. Water damage?. Maybe a warehouse had a water leak?. Or did a forklift do some damage to a crate full of them. Product boxes don't just get damaged over nothing.

    • shouldn't matter. 12 month warranty.

      • Yeah i suppose true.

  • mobile site still allowing me to go to checkout

    • Oh hangon the BUY NOW button is back!. But it's now $79.95. Mustn't had allowed you to go through checkout maybe because the price just changed?.

      • Use the discount code.

        • Ain't going to help. No stock

        • Ahhh yeah forgot about that discount code. doh

        • Crazy stock system. Goes from out of stock status to BUY NOW then back to out of stock.

  • +1

    Mobile site still shows stock.

    • Try and add one to your cart. It won't work.

  • happy to buy it off someone for $80 - please pm

  • FYI - it's the cheapest player by a long mile, even at full price, to have SACD playback. The new model (S5200) no longer has it.

  • Great Price. Glad I missed it as my LG 3D player is though running fine.

  • +1

For those that had a moment and ordered one without adding the discount coupon, you can email their support and they will refund the 20 bucks, i just did it and got it refunded.

  • Received mine today, no issues at all. Looked like a brand new retail unit (ie. no carton damage!)

    Thanks OP :)

    • Likewise, no carton damage, brand new. The smart features are good - netflix and hulu plus (via DNS/VPN). Great buy, saves getting a Roku/appleTV for a second TV. Very happy.

  • Thanks alot - arrived today, package seems as new.
No definite damage to carton, works perfectly
