Sony Xperia Z2 $672 Outright from Telstra

1120

Just saw the Xperia Z2 at Telstra in Northland, looks like a great price at near $100 cheaper than Sony. The lady said they're available and in stock today.

Now thats a deal — Local Aus Stock for $672 — Cool ..

    • +12

Who would've thought, Telstra doing a bargain :)

  • Nice!

  • Looking at their site, they have black and purple.

  • -7

Good price, wonder why so much cheaper than S5 and M8, must not be selling well.

    • +8

Sony phones have always been cheaper in Aus than the equivalent Apple, HTC or Samsung. The XPERIA Z retailed for $620 (or so) from Telstra when it was first launched when S3's were selling for more and the S4 when first launched was over the $800 mark a month or so later.

Problem with Telstra branded XPERIAs is that the firmware updates always seem to take a loooong time to be released and can get you stuck on an older version of Android while the rest of the world has moved onto the latest and greatest. This can be easily remedied by flashing generic factory firmware (and getting rid of all the Telstra crap) but I can appreciate that not everyone is comfortable with this.

      • +1

This is true, I'm still using the original Xperia S which I purchased 1st week for $480..

        • +1

Wow! You must be a very patient person!

        • Still a decent dual core phone.

  • Is it Telstra network locked or any sim can be used?

    • Unlocked - but double check.

it just has one or two Telstra apps that can't be deleted but can be disabled.

    • It's unlocked.

    • +3

All Telstra post-paid phones are unlocked. Prepaid on the other hand will carry an unlocking fee.

      • Is the bootloader unlocked?

      • Isn't prepaid the same as outright?
If so that means this phone outright has an unlocking fee which means its locked????

        • +1

The cheaper, <$200 prepaid mobiles are the ones he's talking about.

  • Great phone, great deal

  • Mirin phone

  • +2

I just called a few shop and they said they dont sell it outright, only on a plan, I am in the land of the doomed (Perth)

    • +4

FWIW, I just went to the Telstra Store on Hay St in the Perth CBD and bought mine outright

Maybe call up that shop and see?

      • +1

        at $672?

        • +3

          Yep, $672 outright
They asked once if I wanted a plan or a pre-paid, I declined, and they left it at that
Pretty impressed that they weren't pushy about it at all

        • +1

Good stuff Helix! I am now a proud owner of a Z2, the Perth Hay Street Branch does have stock and do not care much if you want a plan or not.

          The phone will come unlocked.

        • +1

Those who got this phone, you can get the magnetic dock at a chinese website for 11 bucks instead of paying 60 for a legit.

          http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Magnetic-Charging-Dock-Deskto…

      • +1

Yes, they said they only sell them with the plan at the moment, this is in Telstra Riverton Perth. Telstra Maddington says no stock, but he is keen to sell me one on the plan!

    • I went through the same thing with Note 2 and Lumia 920 all wanted me on a plan… -_- GG I am on prepaid.

Only store that was willing to sell them was Hardly Normal and JB's.

    • +1

Called up the Murray Street store.

They're selling it outright no problems :)

  • -5

Yeah almost $100 less than sony store, just shows how much sony were ripping off people.

    • -2

Alternatively, it goes to show how much telstra expect to profit from prepaid recharges.

      • +15

        by selling unlocked phones?

  • -3

i learned my lesson of buying a Xperia mobile, when i bought a Sony Xperia Z Ultra for AUD 400 from Sony Centre. I cracked the screen within 2nd day of use when i put it in my jeans hip pocket. Unsurprisingly it wasn't covered by warranty. Wish I chose Note 3 instead….

    • +11

Lol so you reckon the note 3 wouldn't have cracked either?

      • Lmao. glass doesn't just crack in someone's jeans pocket.

        • +3

It CAN if the phone is designed and/or manufactured incorrectly and the glass is already under stress…

Sony seem to be repairing phones with certain screen issues so it is obviously an issue.

        • This happened to me (glass cracking in pocket) just after buying my Nexus 4. The second one lives on over a year later.

      • I guess no..being bigger in size, note 3 would have cracked something else….lolz

      • +4

Hmm so phone cracking = tight jeans pocket = overweight = go easy on the HJs :P

        • Haha. Your logic is flawless!
          I can't argue with that.

    • Negligence/misuse are never covered by warranty. Even if you picked up an insurance scheme or had your own home and content, you'd still be looking at an excess. Replacing a device is expensive for all involved. Look after your stuff man and don't blame the manufacturer for your mistakes.

      • Actually, it IS fair to blame the manufacturer where it seems to be a manufacturing or design fault !!!

I find it frustrating that people always assume a broken screen is the customer's fault - even Sony recognise they have a problem with some of the Xperias as evidenced by the fact they have replaced some cracked screens under warranty

        • +1

Many cases on the net about issues with sony screens cracking

        • Buy a strong dual-side protective case and this will never happen. Treat your phone display like it was the rear of a fragile optical disc containing priceless memories that will be lost forever if you carelessly scratch or crack it. People expect too much from their monkey glass, thinking it is bullet proof and indestructible. The only people I see with phones in their ass pocket are hipsters and chicks. Unsurprisingly, they usually have banged up phone screens when you ask for their numbers ;)

        • I totally agree that some people abuse their phones, but in the case of many of the Sony phones, the reports are that the phones would just spontaneously crack whilst sitting motionless on a desk (or similar surface) - I don't expect a phone to be indestructible, but I also don't expect the phone to effectively break itself ;-)

A case would make no difference if the phone screen breaks due to the glass being under torsion as a result of manufacturing/design issues combined with reported problems with effective heat dissipation (the heat issue would possibly be made even worse by a case).

        • Even when there isn't a "design fault" as such, some phones are better designed than others.

I've used Smart phones phones since the Nokia navigator brick phone. The first cracked screen I've had was an Xperia Z. My HTC Evo 3D survived for a couple of years until I got caught in a Monsoon… and it still works except that the brightness only goes to 40%. My Z broke before I my protective case arrived. It is seems stupid that a $500 phone designed to survive a drop into water can't survive a regular drop that my old $100 EVO handled no probs without a protective case. Even the legendarily fragile iPhone will usually still work after a drop, the screen just won't look as pretty with the cracks.

Now here it isn't a simple case of this breaking in my pocket. However the design of the Z was a contributing factor in that (1) a crack in the glass will affect the digitiser preventing use of the phone, (2) unlike the Evo, the Z doesn't have a plastic buffer round the glass so on the Z the the glass gets the full impact of the fall, (3) unlike the iPhone 5 replacing the screen requires a full and expensive disassembly and (4) despite 1,2,3 they didn't include a protective case with the Z.

Regardless of who is "at fault", when considering whether this is a bargain, it is worth noting that there are phones that are cheaper and better designed (though of course as an older phone the Evo is not full hd, only dual core etc. The 3D display and camera is a nice bonus though).

I've ordered another Evo for $100. If I get the Z fixed, I'll attach it to my wrist with a Nintendo Wii lanyand.

This happened to my brother's Z1 as welll. Not covered under warranty as there were more than 1 hairline crack.

I think it was more a manufacturing defect than anything else as my brother's phone has never been dropped (evident by no dents on the metal frame etc) however they make the rules and my brother can't be bother fighting them.

EDIT: For those that commented about tight jeans and not looking after gear, my brother is OCD about these things so I do believe that the glass was a manufacturing defect. All it takes is a small fracture and just changes in temperature can cause the fracture to grow.

      • +1

Even placing a phone in your pocket shouldn't be considered "negligence or misuse" - manufacturers should design products to accommodate reasonable use scenarios.

Actually, Sony don't make the rules - the government does ;-)

      • It might not even be a manufacturing defect, when you make glass more scratch resistant it becomes easier to crack and vice versa; glass which is hard to crack is easier to scratch

    • +1

Guys, please, do some research, Sony Xperia Z series has high rate of Cracked screen and even "self cracking" issues. I didn't mean to offend any xperia fanboy (lol). I'm just telling to be extra careful when using the Xperia Z series, that's about it!

    • -2

I don't suppose it cracked whilst in your crack? Now that would be something!

  • +1

    Thanx op :-)

I bought a HTC one from Telstra outright unlocked last year and was very very impressed by their warranty process.

After about 9 months of use, the phone wouldnt charge. Walked into the shop, Telstra took it in, and within less than a week I had a brand new HTC one

+1 for this price, +1 for the after sales support you'll get from Telstra

Note I wasn't even on a plan with Telstra

    Thanks OP

    • I have to agree with buying from Tesltra outright unlocked.

I had the purple hue issue with my original phone, got it replaced via Fone Zone (took a month).

The second unit I got had the same issue, but no where near as bad. I took it on a Saturday into Telstra(who have taken over customers from Fone Zone) and I had a replacement unit on the following Tuesday.

+1 for after sales support from Telstra (I'm on TPG).

    • I agree with this. We have close to 1100 staff on Telstra account. Their warranty handling is very good with the exception of devices they deem out of warranty, when in-fact they are still covered by consumer warranty. Example below:

      • I-phone 4S bad power button (20 months old)

Telstra refused to have anything to do with it. When serial number checked o Apple site, it showed Apple care expired. When device was booked in via the Apple service portal, they replaced it on the spot at the Apple store.

Overall I would recommended buying directly from the big Telco's, when you find local stock at a good price.

      • This is why I am reluctant to buy Chinese Android flagship clones online.

    • +2

I agree with this. Especially with the big phones like the HTC, Samsung and Sony, you will get a one or two business day turnaround.

The downside: Telstra firmware installed on the phone.

      The upside: awesome warranty repairs.

  • told you guys to wait.

anyway, just letting you guys know that some stores might not sell it outright which is why i didnt post this myself

  • Anyone else manage to get one in SOR Perth? Please post as I really wanted one.

    • +1

bought mine today in the Perth CBD Hay St Store if that is any help

  • I had a xperia that became useless after my screen and digitaliser spontanously heat-cracked.

That being said, Xperias have good cameras, vibrant screens and they are waterproof. I wouldn't want to be a early adopter, but if no-one reports the screen issue with this model for a few months after release, it would definitely be worth buying.

    • -1

Umm this is the z2. There have been 2 before it and I'd say it's safe to say that they've considered the heating issues from the previous phones.

      • +3

It was a well known problem with the Z, then it was a wellknown problem for the Z Ultra, then it was still a common problem with the Z1. It's not wise to give them the benefit of the doubt immediately. Just wait a few months then buy it or its successor.

  • Damn, I paid $760 on Thursday from Sony! This is an awesome deal!

    • Do you have price protection on your CCard?

      • Nah, paid cash :(

Oh well! I wonder if this one is Telstra branded or not?

        • +1

It is from a Telstra shop.

        • +3

At least you will get updates as soon as Sony releases them.

  • -2

I just got another 10% discount on the phone when I buy the Sony Noise canceling earphones. With an additional 10% off on the earphones, case and screen protector.

    • So are you talking about the headphones that were offered free for pre-orders?
If so how much did you end up paying for each item?

    • +1

How does that work? How much were the earphones? Which Telstra store was this?

      • The RRP for the headphones is $79, if it is the same ones that were offered free for pre-order.

        • Just curious why then a store gave out the bundle deal for an outright purchase, since 10% off is pretty much the earphones for free, and another 10% off the accessories? Don't quite understand.

        • Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either…

  • +3

Yuppie! Just bought mine from Telstra Brookside Shopping Centre in Mitchelton (QLD).
Thanks OP. The Reps nearly refuse to sell it outright, I said I called before and he went "Oh Ok". lol underwater 4K recording plus slow motion - here I come!!!! ps: i'm gonna hve so much fun with Z2 :-)

  • I can't get enough of the Xperia line.

Although I think I have come to the conclusion that my Xperia Z Ultra, while awesome, is just a bit too big for comfortable every day use.

Once the Z2 drops under $500, I shall have my reasonably sized upgrade (although really I'd like for the Xperia Z1/Z2 Ultra to have a 6" screen and minimal bezel - along with the same 20mp sensor in the Z1/Z2, that would be my perfect phone).

  • Good price, they didn't have stock a few days ago.

But it's a big choice to get a Telstra branded, unlocked phone, as Telstra is the worst network for releasing software updates. They haven't with the Z and are always weeks to sometimes never release updates other networks have released to their customers.

    So beware of this fact.

Shame I've got a Z and there isn't much of a reason to update to these Z1 or Z2.

    • +4

Not sure if it's the same this time around but with the z, I'm pretty sure you could flash a Sony factory image without unlocking the bootloader. Maybe a bit much for the faint hearted, but it's pretty straightforward iirc

    • +1

      Agreed. Not much point getting a Z1 or Z2 over a Z.

After reading reviews, I walked into the shop with the intent to come out with a new phone. However, after playing with it for a bit, I decided against it.

The UI felt sluggish, despite the CPU.

In fact, switching between 1080p video, youtube and Camera was VERY FAST and SMOOTH, but Sony needs to SERIOUSLY get its shit together when it comes to the BASIC homescreen. It is WAY TOO SLUGGISH. I compared with a stock HTC One (m8) and that was very fast on the homescreen. That really put me off, hence my decision not to buy. My Xperia Z (after rom mod) is WAY SMOOTHER than the current stock homescreen for Xperia Z2.

      Poor form sony.

      • I always replace the launcher with Nova… don't have to deal with anyone elses home screen.

  • +3

Got mine today at burwood, outright and unlocked. Other stores around actually had no stock. My local telstra store was only plans. Mentioned before, only one telstra app that cannot be removed. The boot up logo also shows no telstra branding.

  • +2

has anyone tried to pricematch at Jb-HiFi ? i have a gift card there

    • Hoping this to as the JB version will be unbranded ie. no Telstra splash screen, apps etc.

    • +4

Yes i price matched it at the world square jbhifi yesterday. they gave me a non telstra branded one for 672.

  • +1

telstra top ryde sells it outright without any hassle. nice.

  • -5

WATS THE DIFFERENCE B/T THE STOCK U BUY FROM SONY CENTRE AND FROM TELSTRA SHOP?

  • So does telstra sell the Z2 4G TABLET outright at a price better than Kogans $669+shipping (https://m.kogan.com/au/buy/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-4g-lte-sgp5…)? Telstra will apparently have it outright at $720. http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2014/02/26/sony-unveils-the-x…

    • yes, its $720 outright

  • +2

Is anyone else having a problem where after 4k video recording for a couple of minutes and the back of the phone heats up and an error message pops up along the lines "temperature getting high and camera will shut off"??

Not sure if this is a common issue or have a defective device.

Edit: looks like i'm not the only one experiencing these issue. What a joke, can't record longer than a few mintues and have to wait 5 mintues for it to cool back down to start recording for another few minutes.
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/technology/gadgets-and-gear/g…

    • That IS a worry :-(

(I was hoping it would only affect the early April release models in Singapore)

    • I went to a Telstra store and tested it out. 5 minutes and 35 seconds of 4k video and I got the overheating warning message.

Does the S5 suffer the same problems?

      • Hmmm, so they haven't fixed it for the Aus stock :-(

      • Must be hardcore processor usage for it to heat up like that.

  • I was in Telstra today and they said that this price will be their standard price for the phone.

  • Picked one up for $670 outright from JB HiFi @ Galleries Victoria in Sydney CBD (price matched). The dude also insisted on giving me some Norton Antivirus rubbish for free, but apparently comes with a $30 cashback. Trying to decide if giving Norton my personal details is worth $30, at this point I'm thinking no :P.

    • Just opt out of any mailing list etc.

  • so the deal wont expire until it price drops?

    • Correct.
