Refurbished Apple TV (March 2012) $79 + Free Shipping

80

Back in stock, for those who missed out last month (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/140425)

Note that it is the 3rd gen (A1427) version, not the latest 3rd gen Rev A (A1469) version, but minimal difference in functionality I believe.

How much do the refurbished ones normally sell for?

jv. There seems to be some debate about whether "back in stock" is actually a bargain.

I don't know. Not a discount on usual refurb price, but sold out previously and now back in stock.

Are there any guidelines covering these sort of posts?

With that said. The "Back in stock" post from 1 month a go was a winner. (63 + votes)

Some info on the model changes…..
    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/03/15/apple-tv-a1469-anand…

The newer one uses less power….
"Assuming you’re using the Apple TV for watching video eight hours a day, every day of the year, the new Apple TV would save about $0.26 per year on your power bill (assuming $0.11/kWh)."

  • Does the google chromecast dongle thingo do everything this does plus more?

    • For people using iOS devices or recent Macs, the integrated AirPlay feature of the AppleTV is a selling point.
You can get similar-but-not-exactly functionality with Chromecast – it all depends on individual preference/needs and budget, as always.

Besides Airplay, Apple TV is the only streaming device that connects to iTunes if you want to rent/buy movies. If you buy iTunes cards at half price when HN has them on special, it means a pricey $7 HD rental becomes a cheap $3.50. iTunes also does a decent Movie of the Week special at $1. A great add on to any smart or non-smart TV.

I am all Android, however I have Apple TV's throughout the house which I use to watch NBA through the very slick NBA Gametime app, and Netflix and Hulu.
I use Chromecasts for Youtube as it is easier to control through my phone, however I used to use Apple TV for it to watch stuff off my playlists easily.

As for the price, I tend to pick these up for $40-$50 off Gumtree, so if you want to play with one, I suggest grab an unwanted gift off gumtree, see if you like it, and if not sell it for the same price at no loss.

  • Could do with another one to run Netfix in another room.
Just ordered, apparently will be delivered on Monday.

  • Will this stream my movie collection off my iMac and display cover art and description for all my movies. Most of my movies are MP4 only a few are AVI and MKV

    • Look into PLEX

    • No. Though there are a lot of devices that would do that including media players and smart TVs, DVD players, Smart blueray players etc.

      • and android dongles that cost about $50

        • Do you use an android dongle? I have never used one myself, but I just imagined they would be clunky. I assume they newer more expensive ones are better.

        • You use atv to run as a plex client without needing to jb it. Simple and work well, looks better on a dedicated plex app either through a android box or Samsung app via a TV or smart bluray.

        • What about chrome cast will that do what I want it to do?

        • @deal88 no, but have fam that do, no different to any other android device.
airmouse makes up for lack of touch well, but so do trackpads or trackballs etc
Also you spend most of your time in an app like xbmc or mythtv anyway

        • @twisty, mo

  • I bought one the last time round and could not tell the difference between that and a new one (which I also bought recently with the Dick Smith deal). It is packaged exactly like a new one, sealed and everything and not a scratch.
