10% off Store Wide at David Jones, Myer, JB Hi-Fi, City Beach +More Via 10% off Gift Cards @ Big W

2100

By taking advantage of the Big W Family and Friends 10% off storewide deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/146066) this weekend, you can effectively get 10% off storewide at a number of other stores by buying the desired store's gift card at Big W.

Step 1: Head to your local Big W this weekend with a printout of the flyer from the Big W 10% off deal.

Step 2: Go to the Gift Cards section (near Confectionery usually) and choose a gift card for the store you want 10% off at. These include:

  • Event Cinemas
  • Hoyts
  • Myer
  • David Jones
  • Jay Jays
  • Sportsgirl
  • Just Jeans
  • Smiggle
  • City Beach
  • Rebel Sport
  • Dymocks
  • BCF
  • Country Road
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Kathmandu
  • Supercheap Auto
  • Dusk
  • The Iconic
  • AMF Bowling

and probably some others depending on what gift cards your local Big W has available.

Step 3: Purchase the gift card at the front registers for 10% off its price (e.g. a $100 Myer gift card will cost you $90).

Step 4: Redeem the gift card at the selected store. You'll have 12 months to redeem it.

EXCLUSIONS: 10% offer at Big W is not valid for any Woolworths Limited gift cards or WISH gift cards. All other gift cards are not excluded as far as I'm aware. Remember there's a $50 minimum spend at Big W to receive the 10% off offer.

  • Tried pretty hard to get jb hifi vouchers from Eastland big w but the manager gave me nothing. Left empty handed and very disappointed.

  • Anybody in WA got lucky? Big W riverton has refused to honor them

    • Big W Belmont refused as well.

    • I went though the self serve at mirrabooka with JB cards no problems at first I thought it didn't work as discount only came of my clothes but then when I completed checkout the 10% for the gift cards came off the total very happy.

    • Worked for me at both Riverton and the Spearwood Big W

      • thats odd, i was there first thing this morning and they totally refused it

        • +1

I was also there early in the morning. At first I was told that it was not allowed. I pointed out that it wasn't excluded in the fine print. He checked it against his list of exclusions and asked his Manager. The Manager scanned a gift card and applied the 10% deal and it worked :)

        • damn. i would got some if the guy bothered to check and he isnt keen at all.

    • Got $600 of Myer cards from Joondalup with no problems.

  • Passed $200 (4x$50) of JB gift cards through to combine with ING's 5%. Would've gotten more but then there would be less change of ING honouring it.

  • anyone tried to scan the 10% off barcode from a smart phone? does it work or have to be printed & present.

  • It seems Doncaster Big W went to a great length to make sure people don't get this deal at all.

If you ask the people there, they will say 10% wouldn't apply to all gift cards. When you pointed out about some giftcards are not in the exclusion list, they just said they didn't know why they aren't but they are excluded anyway.

Then you would think if this is the stance they're taking, they wouldn't hid those gift cards but if you observe the display, you would notice the display can be opened (because I saw a staff opened it) and I took a peek and saw lots of 'those' gift cards inside. They're stacked one to another indicating they must have been removed in rush.

Anyway, I could've left with a PSN at 10% discount because that scanned successfully but I didn't buy it.

    Thanks OP for the deal.

  • just got $200 Myers GC without any problem from topryde bigw. Nice fellow at the checkout counter

Lodged a complaint to ACCC and to big w as well as big w qv refused to honor the promotion.

    • Please let us know the outcome if you can.

      • got a call from Big W today, I agree to sell me the gift card with 10% off. I will go to big W QV and buy my $500 JB hifi gift card this weekend.

Went to store after lunch, all JB ones has been cleared out… Bought 4x100 Westfields + 2x50 Myer, the staff is friendly and honor the promotion.

    • was there a $5.95 fee for the westfields one?
I saw the $50 ones only but they had $5.95 surcharge fee for the westfield card

  • did your westfield gift card activate straight away or do you have to call up?

    • I threw away the giftwrap thing without reading… did it say we have to activate it? or is it self activated?

Refused at Southland asked for the Manager - got some dude called Mark who refused to give his 2nd name and acknowledged that he was aware that they were breaking Australian consumer law but still refused to sell them citing Head Office!

I will also lodge an ACCC complaint - if they weren't going to sell them and honour the 10% off then they should have removed them from sale. Just wrong!

The easiest thing to do is buy something else together with the gift card, then scan the family/friends voucher. The discount will apply to the whole order, including the giftcards.

  • I kinda went overboard at Big W Rockdale. 4 × 100 Westfield, 3 x 100 Rebel Sport & 2 x 100 iTunes cards.

    JB HiFi all gone.

The manager couldn't believe it or knew about the discount. He said he got a laptop days earlier at JB.

The lady who scanned my cards wasn't sure if the iTunes cards would go through, but another just said do it and if it does, it does. Anyone know if it's the same with Google Play credit?

They had heaps of Myer cards left. Hmmm, I mmight go back again tomorrow.

    • I was looking today for Rebel Sports card at Big W Rockdale - sold out! Now I know who was it.

    • Think I saw Google Play credit @ 10% off at Coles just yesterday.

  • No issues at big W Canberra Center…got the last 4 JB cards…plenty of others left. Staff were helpful and didn't care.

  • Went and bought a rebel sport voucher @ Melbourne Big W, among other things, and tried to use the card about 3-4 hours after purchasing it but the lady at the counter said that it wasn't registered/paid for on their system.

Went back to Big W and they fixed it for me but I have to wait till tmr to check if it did indeed work.

    • Can confirm that it worked yesterday. Went to rebel sports and bought some compression pants and it worked.

  • Lady wasn't convinced at my Big W, but assured her and read the conditions - only excluded wish cards and stand alone offshoot woolworth cards. She eventually called over someone more senior, who also wasn't convinced, but who then spoke to someone more senior again.. and they gave approval.

  • bought 2 Rebel gift cards.. tried to use them online.. error msg on both saying they have $0..

could not activate them either using rebel website.

  • For all those lodging consumer complaints it will be interesting to see if anything comes about because technically this isn't a public sale right, distributed to staff of bigw?!

      It was in today's telegraph.

      • And sent via email via their official subscription - that spans me weekly

    • +1

It's featured on their web site- available to anyone.

    • It's on their Facebook page.

  • +1

Seems like the giftcards are not immediately activated.

    • +1

It does. I bought a lens from JB right after

    • We used our jb cards a few hours after purchasing them.

    • I will try another Big W tomorrow, so if I were to purchase 1 JB card, 1 Myer Card and 1 Westfield Card, once I made payment at the checkout, is there anything else I need to do before using them? Like activate them through the Myer, JB and Westfield website? thanks

      • +1

The jb card will be activated when you buy it. I'm pretty sure the myer card is too.

Don't know about the Westfield card. I thought I read somewhere here you have to wait 24 hours to use it.

        • +1

Yes, I bought Westfield giftcards and they were not activated immediately. On the receipt, it says take up to 24 hours.

        • Thanks, guys. Looks like I will go for JB and Myer one if i can find any tomorrow. Cant be bother waiting 24 hours for the westfield one to activate.

        • Checked again this morning and the Westfield giftcards are now activated.

  • Can comfirm that myer gift cards will be activated immediately.

yesterday i bought 6 *100 jb hifi card. the girl at checkout went to phone straight after and calling her friend and telling the deal…

  • +1

update tried my Rebel cards this morning and they worked after about 18 hours since purchase

    all good :)

  • Thanks OP. Worked without problems. No JB Hi-Fi tho (sold out), grabbed 2x50 Myer. Also, Telstra recharge, everyday reward won't scan as someone pointed out.

  • At Westfield Chermside it looks they tampered the POS and it is not accepting any gift cards. I asked for the manager and advised about my possible complaint to the ACCC and 2 minutes later, voila, a team member unlocked the discount :)

  • +5

Westfield Southland BIGW yesterday totally refused me sale of the JB-HIFI gift cards. I had 4 x $100 in my hand and they refused to put them through. I asked for the manager and this lady came out and was real rude and refused to put them through citing head office. I notified her about the terms and conditions and she said that she didn't care and wouldn't be selling me the vouchers.

Will lodge an official complaint with the ACCC tomorrow.

    • +1

Had no luck there yesterday either - guy wasn't rude but point blank refused to sell even though he acknowledged that they were breaking consumer law by doing so.

    • What reason did they give? Too many cards at once? Maybe she had some bad experiences working for JB.

  • At Big W Eastland (Vic) today I found a bunch of $50 Myer cards and heaps of DJ ones but the longer bar code would not scan at the self service terminal.

I figured the pos system was 'fixed' in some way so I just returned the cards to the stand.

    • Mine was showing that, it took 3 scans to get it working.

    • I tried to scan them at the self service terminals, the lady then came across to tell me that gift cards only work at the manned terminal.

Worked fine when the cashier scanned all mine through.

Thanks OP. Got 10 x $100 JB cards at Calamvale this afternoon

Let me know if anybody want a Myer gift card. I bought 2 x $50 ones thinking that I would buy something for my wife's B'Day. But I ended up buying a watch from David Jones today as Myer only had the Gold colour watch of that model and wifee wanted silver.
I don't see anything I need to buy from Myer any soon. If anyone who missed this deal and need to buy something from Myer and live around Glen Waverley, Mulgrave, Clayton, Springvale area PM me. I can give it for my cost which is $90. So you get 10% off.

    • That's really nice of you. :)

  • Question about the ING rebate thing. I've read different stories about people getting phonecalls and having their rebates knocked back.
We purchased a $100 JB card + a $5 item then went away and had a coffee. An hour later purchased another $100 card then half an hour later used the ING again for some clothing (around $60 worth). All at the same BIG W.

Went to a different store a few hours later and used the ING for a purchase of around $20.

So my question is - what are the chances of that being knocked back? We have only had the ING account for a month and have no idea how long we are supposed to wait in between purchases at the same store. All of our transactions from the weekend have been given the rebate but the BIG W purchases are still sitting there waiting to be approved.

    • This happened to me last year. My wife had used my card at Target in the morning and then in the evening I bought a gift from the same store using the same card which has triggered something at ING. They called me and gave a warning. After that I didn't have much time to finish my first 6 months as it ended last December for me.

Don't do multiple transactions from the same store on the same day using your card.

      • You've got me worried now.

Do they call you fairly soon after making the purchases or does it take them a few days?

    • I bought a few hundred dollars worth of gift cards using a ING card on Sat. So far, no calls but I'll post here if there are any issues.

My logic is that if I get the 5% ING cashback then it's a bonus that I will happily accept. If ING decides not to honor it and takes it back, I still enjoyed the 10% Big W Friends & Family discount. The ING cashback is just icing on the cake - no harm trying and nothing to lose. :)

      • I just checked my account and everything went through OK - rebates all there (yay!). Some stores must take a bit longer.

        • It's all good then. When I got the call it was a day or two later. There might be many people doing it and I don't think they can call all the individuals to give a warning which would cost them more. But it's not hard for them to create an automated rule enforced by their systems anyway.

  • +1

Any response from ACCC for those that called?

  • +2

had to wait 24hrs for each westfield gc to be activated, so over the span of 3 days I did the following…

westfield giftcards@bigW to wish giftcard@woolies to westfield giftcards@bigW to coles myer card@target

    total saving 14%

that's groceries taken care of for a month

    • Congratz.. A true ozbargainer here..

    • How much in total do you need for one month of groceries?

      • $500.. but i need $100 for bunnings, so one more gift card conversion to go

  • +1

ended up getting a $40 jb hifi voucher after complaining to big w head office.. so basically $40 for free. not bad!
