  • When I saw these at Borders (before they closed their stores), they seemed really badly built compared to the Kindle. Have they improved ?

    • Build quality is so/so no complaints but the buggy software has been a major PITA with our one.

    • +1

But you can't run epub on kindle, so you couldn't also say the kindle is badly built…

      • +2

correction, you can't read epub on the default kindle software, you can however install Duokan and dual boot your kindle to read pretty much any format.

        • +1

or buy a multi format reader… like Kobo etc

        • +2

Or just use Calibre to change to any format in seconds and its free :)

        • Thats Duokan looks really interesting - thanks for the tip

There once was on ozbargain cheapskate

    • He must be very lucky guy to stay at the right place and the right time.

No more eReader posts for next few days please, since I'm still in the depths of misery of loosing my $5 Sony eReader from JB yesterday.

misery of loosing my $5 Sony eReader

Can't you just tighten it ?

        bad spelling sry

  • No stock. Website says there is stock, but there is none.
This is a clearance item.. and it is well cleared (according to OW person I spoke with)

I will neg the deal, to ensure people read this message, and actually call the store first.
But I think you'll find it difficult to obtain this reader.

    • Did you try Melbourne CBD stores? They are all showing up as in stock…

      • I only tried Brisbane southside stores.
All showed in stock.. but none were.
It seems only Oxley says it has stock now (but I know this to be false)

Call first to save possible hassles.

    • Since you managed to get one, your neg vote has been revoked.

      • -1

Well, I got it before this deal was posted.. and as I said, I was told it was the -last- one.
So neg was for quantity, and misleading website.
(this is why I didn't post the deal myself)

But, perhaps there are more, and they told me there were none to 'save face'.

Anyway, grey areas are what moderators are for, and I appreciate and respect your decision.

        • Thanks for the explanation. Moderators can still get things wrong :) If there is an issue with limited quantity, it's best to use the report button, since we have require deals to have a min quantity of 10. Same goes for 'out of stock' - use the report button and not the neg.

p.s. I was actually successful but I had a manager apparently bring the last one in from Ipswich to my local store.

She did this, because I had previously sat in her store while the staff assured me they could sell me the floor model, they just had to get the security device off it. Anyway, they were busy, and there was only 1 staff on POS/Bus Machines section (another on break) so they made me wait. An hour later they tell me they have discovered the floor stock is actually a fake device and has no electronics in it. I believe steam started coming from my ears at this point.

Anyway.. it's a really good ereader for my needs.

    First book: The Alchemist.

    edit:
    p.p.s The Saga Part 2:
When I went to pick it up the manager had told me that it was sitting behind the counter.
I said this to the worker, who looked at it, with my name written on it, and the managers name, and a box that says 'KOBO' on the side, and he said, 'no this isn't it'. So, he searched all the other cupboards, and another guy searched out the back. And I kept saying, "I'm pretty sure that's it, the box, right there, with KOBO on the side, might have my name on there.." He looked at it a couple of times, as did the other guy, then elsewhere, then says that the manager left hours ago but he'll call her. So he phones her and about 10 seconds into the conversation goes, "Oh.. ok.. yeah, I see it, behind the counter here". Steam, once again, from the ears.

after yesterday $5 saga i feel $49 is super expensive for ereader

  • Spewing…Bought one for a birthday present from OW for $99 last week! To add insult to injury, they were priced at $88 the week before that…

    • hmm if only you could return it and then buy it again..

      • You probably could. As ow doesn't have a limit on how long the return period is. Lol

    • Thanks for the advice but too hard now that I have given it to my friend for his birthday… He was very happy to see all the e-books that were loaded onto it…amazing what you can find on the web!

      • +1

        1/ buy a new one at $49
        2/ retain both receipts
3/ go back on Sunday (likely to be different staff), say the guy you bought it for as a gift already got one (so not lying)
4/ return unopened reader with original receipt

  • for anyone in Newcastle area:
Warners Bay has none (despite showing in stock)
Rutherford apparently has around 7, but I didnt want one badly enough to drive and find out

  • 2011 model. succeeded by the kobo glow in 2012, and then the kobo aura in 2013. Okay price for basic unit, I could certainly use one for when I'm in the tub.

  • Bough one from East Vic Park, WA. Plenty of stock left

  • +1

There is a sync issue with their stock database and their website. Seems to have started occurring when they upgraded their website. I bet somebody forgot to properly setup the replication / sync options on the server.

If you want to know the stock levels and where they have stock, best to call in and get them to check. There is stock left as you can see above, but it may not be in the stores which is mentioned on their website as being in stock.

  • I got one from Bankstown - Good deal

  • BIGW price matched and then got another 10% off for family and friends day. They had heaps. Thanks for the post.

  • Picked up last Display model today… marked down further to $39 @ Officeworks Epping (VIC)

    • oh god.. did you check it actually has electronics inside it ?! :) (See my previous post.. where after 1hour of ow pain/struggle to get the display stock, it turned out to be a dummy unit)

  • It's gone up now, $79. I wish I saw this earlier !
