Pretty good price for a corporate grade laptop, especially with those specs. Pity it's not Haswell, but.

    • Not haswell kills it for me. Think battery life.

  • +4

Very nice price, especially with the 3 year next day warranty. That in itself is worth a $100 at least.

Dell Latitudes are also extremely easy to repair and find parts for, on top of being very reliable.

  • +4

Im loving the 56k modem! Oldskool.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8XKhCfsTts ……….. those were the days… who doesn't miss that sound?? like come on!

    • If you are a phone tech you would still use one to dial up to legacy systems.

      • Or send faxes.

    • You can send fax oldskool as well!

  • +1

if this were 4th gen cpu i would be all over it but i suspect the $800 discount is because it is 3rd gen

  • theres not a big gap between ivybridge and haswell chips and besid we s that dell latitude machines are just built to last. excellent quality, support and for thay price a great deal factoring in the ssd and 1080p screen. excellent keyboard as well..

    • +2

Performance wise there is not a big difference. However when you look at power consumption there is a massive difference between the generations.

This is why the Surface Pro 1 with 3rd gen lasts 4 hours while the Surface Pro 2 with 4th gen lasts 8. They have really similar performance (SP2 5% faster than SP1), but battery life extends dramatically with a 4th gen cpu.

This is due to better power management and idle power consumption. At full load they use roughly the same amount of power.

  • +1

hhmmm. this or yesterdays Horize deal…

  • Amazing deal, even if it's a 3rd gen CPU!

    • +12

      Did hoot also buy one?

    • +3

Onsite tech with latitudes after a call to the callcenter.

    • +9

rare and I guess if you like tiny icons that's good.

You've got to be kidding me. At 15 inches I'd consider it almost mandatory, 1366x768 on a full size laptop belongs in the dark ages. Far, far more important than a touch screen.

      • +7

        acer lol

not a business ready laptop and you cant compare acer 1 yr warranty (lol!) with 3 yrs onsite business

        its fhd

touch is a waste of time on laptops

win7 pro is fine by me

the wireless card is best non AC card out being 5ghz and up to 450 speed

it has a touchpoint and real mouse buttons and expresscard

it also takes a dock and 3g

i assume it has vpro and all the usual ilo gubbins

bad side is the outdated cpu and hd4000 but it is a business laptop

i'm tempted as i can 100% claim a laptop in the next 2 weeks

and lol people who buy 15" 1,366 x 768 laptops… they must be blind

    • Tiny icons?
      You can resize icons dude…

      • right click desktop -> view -> large icons

        this is so hard!

take it easy people - the guy is getting negged to oblivion

btw. although the unit lacks the mag frame of the 6000 series it does have a hard alloy top cover plate… very few laptops have that any more

    • i have an XPS M1530 from mid 2008 sill working (didn't use as much in last 2 years but before that, some heavy FEM simulations for hours)…..
was 2.1K(after 30% off) with most upgrades and their 3 yrs premium extended warranty
I did use their warranty (MB few time , HDD one) a lot but was no big deal, home or work… they came and replace the part after one phone call….
service wise they great… product was ok…
compared to hp and their lemons (tx1000)

  • +1

One note is that the E5430 is the "cheap" model, not the nicer "premium" finish on the E6430.. But still much more respectable than most $800 laptops. But whatever the case, they are tough, easy to service, and Dell warranty is pretty good. The ones that I buy at work live through some shocking abuse.

    • I have seen E4310's with completely detached lids, because users have a habit of holding the laptops by their lids which causes the hinges to break.

I just contact Dell, upload some photos of the damage and then next day it gets repaired on the site.

      • But they wouldn't fix the one I had that was submerged in chinese takeaway..

        • If your business has clumsy employees, you need to get ADP.

      • +1

Every time I see an "average punter" holding their laptop like this I want to grab it off them, close it, and smack them over the back of the head with it.

Seriously, how goddamn lazy and contemptuous for property that isn't their own are people these days…

        • -2

I think the opposite. I should be able to hold my laptop any way I like without worrying if the hinge is going to break or the screen crack. I pick all my own laptops up from any angle I want. I can pick my tablets up anyway I want, and my Vita, and my phone etc. They are mobile devices and should be made to be carried. You can call me goddamn lazy if you like, but there is nowhere that it says that I had to promise to close them and lift them by the base when I carry them.

By the way - does Ozbargain condone violence? ("smack them over the back of the head with it.") Should I report this?

Are you going to come and smack me over the back of my head?

        • +1

I think xyron was more in the context of people holding company issued laptops like that (hence the "property that isn't their own" bit). Of course if you want to hold your own laptop up by the CD tray or any other part of it, be my guest :)

        • -1

Ahh, so he's going to politely ask me if I own the laptop before he smacks me over the head with it. That's nice! :)

I'm not sure that many people buying this deal were purchasing for company issued laptops though.

Also - it would be great if CD trays were strong enough to carry a laptop. You could pop them out and use them as a handle if they were shaped properly. Unfortunately, I don't have CD trays in my devices anymore. They're all CD tray less :)

BUT - xyron could get a better swing with a handle…

  • I think this deal 3 year warranty and backlit keyboard and its dell.

  • no uSB 3.0 in this?

    • You might need to google it.. The E6430's have USB3, and the E5440's do too.

  • +2

I deal with Dells a lot and these Lats are worth their weight in gold, they're one of the longest lasting laptops I've worked on. Take them apart and you can definitely see the difference between business grade and consumer grade.

3 years warranty where the tech comes to your house the next day to fix it is invaluable too.

    • oh hell yeh… haha i helped out a colleague at work with her home laptop i think it was an xps or something … i seriously had not ever seen so many screws in a laptop… and i used to fix the inspiron 8000 back in year 2000-2001.. hahaha weighed and cost as much as a house…

these u just pop the bottom and can upgrade most parts without any further fiddling (yes rolf harris would be dissapointed - sorry couldnt help it..haha)

  • Emm. How is thi compared to the macbook pro guys?

    • +1

Considering the only MBP you'll be getting near this price will be years old or off the back of a truck..pretty good. Bulky and heavy by 'modern' standards though.

    • +1

And you won't get 3 years warranty.

Dell also supplies spare parts for five years for their business laptop lines, so even after 5 years down the road and you're still using the laptop (unlikely, but a good laptop will last that long) you can still buy parts like screens, motherboards and batteries.
That's the beauty of a Latitude series.

      • we only just started to decommission the lattitude D630's at work and those are old and had known issue's even then we have a fair few in good working order :)

        • +1

          That's bloody ancient.

We gave away our E4310's, roughly 30 of them last year when we rolled out new E7xxx series laptops.

Most of them were in full working order — first gen Core i5, 4GB of RAM, 250GB 7200RPM drives. Whoever receives it will be one happy camper.

        • +1

          oh i got that beat

one place i'm at some users went from t60s/t61s to x1 carbons

        • I ended up with a Latitude D420 in my possession via an op shop. According to Dell's API the thing shipped in 2007 but it still works, only problem is someone ripped out the HDD!

Even when I had at it with a screwdriver, it survived. Damn thing.

        • I still use a D630 when I'm in the field. It just never dies

    • -1

i prefer taking my mbp to uni compared to this lol. actually even for home use i still use my desktop or some other laptops.

  • +1

    Great deal

  • Do u think this would be upgradable to Windows 8 ?

    • You can run windows 8 on it. Provided you have a license for it..

  • Great price for the professional grade Laptop. Would have gone straight to buy this 1-2 years back, but today's scenario is a bit different. For now, 2 years old HP with 2nd gen i7 quad core, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD is running smooth.

I think my next one will be the Microsoft Surface 3 ( or something similar) after spending a little extra cash to give the ease of a tablet + functionality of a full Laptop. ( add a monitor + wireless KB and mouse for desktop use)

  • +1

I dunno… you can get a MBA 13 inch under $1000 with all those Dick Smith pricing errors.

    • +1

That was a ridiculously good one off price that's gone though.

  • How do you choose Win 8 with this model?
It says "Operating system Available with Windows 8 Pro", but you cant upgrade win 7 to 8

    • +8

not being able to choose win8 is a bonus

      • +4

That's YOUR opinion. I have no problem with people sticking with win 7. It was a great system. But for me, not being able to choose win 8 KEPT me from buying this laptop.

    • to be honest it's not needed, win 8 is fine but i find the Metro interface to be only useful for a touchscreen tablet/convertible than a business laptop like this one. :) The Metro App's however are just garbage… (sorry personal opinion)

      • +1

        your opinion is correct

Microsoft's app shop is like Harvey Norman running Google Play or itunes app store

        its that bad

        • +3

In other words the apps are overpriced, crappy and there's a poor selection?

  • +1

Fantastic deal on a superb business grade laptop. Great screen, keyboard, and overall quality and the 3 year warranty is icing. Just ordered one. Thanks GEMINI! :)

  • +1

What ever you do, stay away from Dell wifi cards. Select Intel cards to make life easy, also get a 9 cell battery with 3 yrs Wty, uncheck McAfee option as well, select no AV.

    • I second that, my dell's wifi adapter is appalling, constantly dropping in and out.

    • +1

      It has Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 (802.11 a/b/g/n)

      • There is an option where you can select another card. And as mentioned before Dell card are useless with no support from Dell they keep telling you your wifi needs fixing, while you tell them 10 other devices are working properly before the laptop came into play and they do not understand that!

  • Starting weight 2.34 kg kills this for me.

A proud user of E6530, who says 'Nevermore - I don't need to do gym class while commuting".

    • +3

Only 300 grams more than what a 13" macbook pro weighs, and you get a 15" screen for your trouble.

Sounds like you really do need to go to the gym if carrying around 2.3kg is too much for you.

      • 2.34kg is the MINIMUM (ie. small battery, ssd and no cdrom)

        its closer to 3kg all

look, this is basically a business DTR

as much as i like them you have to try a sub 1.5kg and see what the fuss is about

i drive and even i dont like 2.5kg 15" as portables

people who take them on public transport? yeesh

  • I'm guessing no gaming capabilities? Considering this, but looks a little thick.

    • I was also wondering about this.

Can this laptop handle basic gaming like CS GO?

Computer hardware specs is outside of my mental capacity to understand.

      • Look up YouTube games on HD4000 game play footage. It'll give you a fair idea on perfor manc.

  • Any dell coupons around? Tempted to buy one.

  • would this be better than the horize deal posted earlier?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/148245

    • +2

This is a third generation Intel, while the Horize is fourth gen, and weighs less. There is an advantage in battery life and graphics performance.

But you get a backlit keyboard, dual band wireless already configured, an operating system already installed, 3 year next business day support plus online tech support, and Dell's trademark build quality. Easy to repair too.

      • All Dell's are not the trademark quality you are talking about, there are lot of gaps in their quality as every where else, but latitudes are their Toyota Lancruiser range, just like Toshiba Protege or Tecra range.

As for easy repair, a good quality laptop should not need much repair, so I am not sure what part of laptop repair is being mentioned here by many, is it changing MB, a daughter card or HDD?

        • +2

All Dell's are not the trademark quality you are talking about,

Well they do have a spectrum of crappy mainstream computers to proper business laptops, so it goes like:

          Craptastic —————————————————— Fantastic
Inspiron > XPS > Vostro > Latitude > Precision workstation

As for easy repair, a good quality laptop should not need much repair,

Well the latitude notebooks are often used by schools and businesses, and the typical upgrade cycle (for my workplace) is around 4 years so they're expected to last that long. That's why we buy business grade notebooks with 4 year warranty and not crappy Inspirons because within the 4 years, some parts of the laptop may get damaged through use (spilled drinks on keyboards, battery degraded, screens cracked, touchpads not working) so availability of spare parts is important.

  • What is the purpose of this device: "MODEM Internal 56K Modem"

    • +1

      faxing

  • expired now

    • I've marked the deal as expired.

      • Just noted that the deal is back on Dell website

        • what about the backlit keyboard?

  • lol i put one in my cart and it said it would save it for 2 days but now its still in cart but i cant pay for it. Oh well not meant to be enjoy all who got one.

  • Has anyone received the laptop? or even have the order processed through?

Mine has been cancelled after 3 days of waiting by Dell saying that they don't have parts and that was after charging my CC.

    not good Dell!

    • Not good, I'd try to call them up.

I ordered one as well and my order status has been "Order Received" the entire time, even though my CC has been charged too. I just received an email today saying parts were out of stock but they can be switched (touchpad/trackstick & the backlit keyboard) and the order appears to still be able to go through.

  • Dell just rang me can't ship with the backlit keyboard…. told them to cancel the order ozbargained !

  • Yup, no backlit keyboard. Got the email…undecided if I still want to proceed. I likely will, but it's a bit disappointing to get that retraction, and not even get an offer of some cash back. They actually said it would be a $17 extra addition for the non-backlit keyboard, but since it is delayed they won't charge me extra. Gee, thanks. :P

  • No Phone call yet, but once you get past the horrible Dell Account system and enter Order and Customer details 10 times, my order status is 'Work in Progress', I wonder whether it is progressing towards a cancellation?

What is included in this order still has '1 583-16365 Internal Dual Pointing Backlit Keyboard (English) for Windows 8'. Did any one that selected Win8 get a cancellation call or is it just Win7 orders or is it just random?

    • I think it means designed for win8 - laptop will still ship with win7 pro.

Order status shows mine has just finished build, took them 9 days. Is this normal for dell business lappy's taking this long? Expected delivery also delayed from 26 to 30. Any updates from all who ordered?

      • update: ETA has now moved 7 days later to 7th July. I guess one has to wait for customised build, but nearly a month is too much. Dell need to get their act together.

Is this normal for dell business / latitude custom build? Any thought on past experiences by anyone

  • anyone get one of these that they'd like to sell to me :)

  • Got mine delivered couple of days ago. Very pleased with it so far.
