The Story (speculation on my behalf)

One could assume that there is a story behind this as I have seen this on eBay in other countries recently and my assumption is that it’s an effort to drive top line sales and bring the stock price back up due to eBay's challenges in 2014:

Ebay’s stock price was recently at a 52 week low at US$48.06 and has been on a consistent decline since 2014. There are several factors that have influenced this (not in order of impact):

  1. The recent security issue/alerts;
  2. Departure of some key executives;
  3. The infighting with investor Carl Icahn;
  4. Alibaba IPO around the corner with Alibaba posing a real threat to Ebay;
  5. Amazon consistent strength and expansion (they’ll be here next year!);
(perhaps 4&5 should have Australian retail worried too!)
  6. Google Search algorithm changes resulting in lower rankings for ebay listings;
  7. Shut down of eBay Now - same day service;
  8. Some other undisclosed events (speculation).

Either way, I’m happy to support them this weekend and I’ll be buying up on Sunday !!!

The Instructions

  1. Proceed to Ebay Checkout Page: Checkout: Review order
  2. Enter coupon code in redemption code box (bottom right) and press apply
  3. Press Continue and pay with paypal
  4. Verify in the paypal screen/system that the discount was applied before you complete your order.

Hint: If you are buying multiple items then make sure the currencies of the items are the same because you will only get one shot at this coupon.

Please let us know what you are going to buy and share your bargains below please.

This deal is appropriate for any items that never seem to go 'on sale', and usually bigger items such as suspension coilovers (coughBCRacingcough). It forces the price down to a somewhat 'affordable' price for buyers and it also means sellers get to move stock that's been on the shelf for a while.

Personally, I bought car parts that never got discounted on ebay :)

  • Let say if I buy a $600 gift card,
I then use this gift card to buy something at the price of $600, which is discounted from $800.
I am going oversea and claim TRS,
What's the actual discount % of the item???

    • 45.25% discount from the original $800.

    • your trs will be the gst component of the amount you payed

    • +1

Assuming the gift card cost $645 before discount, it would cost you $548.25 to buy the $600 item. You would then get back $54.55 at TRS. Total out of pocket is $493.70. Meaning a total discount of 38.3% from the original $800 value.

Didn't your math teacher ever tell you to show your workings?

      • Thanks all for the answer hehe!

  • Bought a $100 US iTunes card just before midnight.
Found the cheapest one from a seller with good feedback, and ended up paying AU $97.41 after currency conversion and the discount.
Got the code already and it worked. So I'm happy :).

  • Hi Guys, I have already made couple of purchase but im still not sure how do i exactly get 2.00% Cashback ? Appreciate if someone can tell me steps?

    • Should have started from there. Too late now

    • Yes, you needed to start from the CashBack site. Click on their ebay link (which inserts a unique code into the eBay address)and then proceed to shop as usual. Unfortunately the horse has bolted now.

  • When's the next offer?

    • +12

your tagged as "Associated" You should know more than we do :P

      • accidentally pressed it with my fat finger on my phone. Dont know how to remove it.

    • +2

      Never

    • With a name like abracadabra, I thought you'd be making it happen for the rest of us lol

  • +6

Thanks OP. Saved $10 off something I had been watching. Don't have a lot of spare cash atm so I am grateful ;)

  • tried to get a PS4 but not sure if it went through….
came up with a message saying my payment was being processed and I would be contacted if there were any issues. Now when i go into "my ebay" it does not show the PS4 in the purchase history - also not showing on my paypal….

    • -5

and you're "not sure"…. have you suffered a head trauma recently?

      • -1

wasn't sure if there was maybe some behind the scenes shenanigans going on that might sort themselves out. Haven't bought anything on ebay for a long time
oh well, saves me some money by not getting something I don't really need ;)

  • I am wondering how many transactions done for the whole day which suppose for only a limited number.

If total 100,000 and average $50 discount that is a lot of money…

  • +2

Excellent OP. Thanks for the heads up on this deal. Spent some money with the OzBargain Spirit.

And then. Just realised we are not costing eBay alot at all. This 15% discount to us = the "fees" they basically charge to sellers :(

    • +1

You are right but it is costing them a lot of profit they otherwise would have pocketed. However I'm assuming they would be looking at this like an advertising fee/investment in driving additional future sales. It certainly made a lot of noise.

As noted giftcards went through the roof. What I'm interested in is how and how much the gift card sellers make money on each card (on the original $100= 104.95 price)? Does anyone have any insights on this?

      • The sellers most definitely would have been making a loss.

        eBay fees of ~15%.

        • +1

Where do you get ~15% from?

        • 9.9% eBay Final Value fee
          http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/fees.html

          2.4% + $0.30 per transaction PayPal fees.
          https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees-table

So 12.3%. not exactly 15% but there isnt much margin in gc trading.

        • 9.9% eBay fees + 2.4% PayPal fees + $0.30 fixed PayPal fee.
Lower eBay fees for paid stores (the most expensive store costs around $500/month)

        • +5

9.9% Final Value fee is for regular accounts.

Someone like Gifte Gift Cards would no doubt be paying for a Featured Store Package due to volume of items listed.

Edit: Also keep in mind that there are other ways they make money on these cards. (activating over phone, expiry date extension, replacement card if lost, cancellation fee if you want a refund, etc.)

I'm sure they wouldn't be selling on eBay if they were making a loss. That would be bloody stupid.

        • A two months ago, Giftegifts was auctioning and selling useful gift cards for below face value. That was more likely to be at a loss.

      • +1

Don't feel bad for them. Ebay is loaded.

      • +3

IIRC they have a small margin on the cards, and a % commission based on balance remaining on each card sold on a daily basis. Basically as a consumer, you buy the card and that card value is forgone in interest that could have been earnt in the bank. The card owners (eg. Blackhawk network) holds this card value (say $100) for other investment activities and thus earns % ROI. A sliver of this % ROI is delivered to the retailer as sales commission (approx 3% pA)

        • Let's hope it's more then $18.67/hour

  • So do you think we'll see this happening again sometime soon?

    • No. Never ever again.

    • Not for a while. This was meant to be a 'stimulus' of sorts. They got the effect they were after.

    • +2

They may not run this promo again as they didn't make any money. Probably they achieved a lot by getting more paypal users and a couple of ebay accounts. Who knows what they were trying to achieve. I seriously doubt they gave away 60k coupons, it would be more. But if they follow dick smith they can do this 10% off weekly/fortnightly :-)

      • I think it's end of financial year and they wanted to show top line sales growth in their financial report. So they can say look we beat our sales estimate and the stock price goes up.

  • Looks like PayPal have a backlog of bank transactions to process. I bought a washing machine yesterday with this deal, it's already been delivered and set up and done two loads of washing, but the money still hasn't come out of my account.

I paid with EFTPOS which is supposed to be instant. Wonder what would happen if I closed the account now…

    • dew it!

    • Um, I'm not aware of an EFTPOS option within PayPal. There's a savings account or a credit card.
If you paid with your savings account, PayPal would have to process this transaction as a debit with the Direct Entry payment system and this is not instant. The transaction will probably get presented to your Bank tonight and funds taken out of your account at that point.
If you closed the Bank Account then you would be hit with a PayPal dishonor fee and they would take the funds from the linked credit card.
If you closed the PayPal account then the transaction would still have happened.

      • I did pay using the savings account debit option. I didn't realise (until a Google search now) that EFTPOS actually referred to portable banking terminals. I thought it just referred to any electronic transaction not involving a credit card. You learn something every day!

Usually when I pay by PayPal the money comes out of my bank account within minutes, if not seconds. That's why I was surprised when it didn't show up next day, particularly for a large amount. I bought something Friday afternoon for less than $2 and within a few minutes it showed up on my bank account.

        • Corrections to the above:
          - PayPal are not necessarily connected to the Direct Entry (DE) system directly, but probably indirectly via one or more of the Banks.
          - PayPal payment options include a savings account and a credit/debit card.

It is interesting that your experience has been an instantaneous withdrawal of funds from your savings account. Potentially, your Bank is the one of the ones that PayPal uses and therefore your Bank is able to process the debit of funds immediately.

If you chose to pay with a debit card then that would be processed through the cards system so your bank could be notified quicker than through the DE system.

I don't normally sell on ebay but decided to sell my old tech stuff while this promo was on.

Out of $935.65 of sales I have to give ebay $98 paypal $9.43 and Australia Post $68.65 so my $935.65 is now $759.57.

The Australia Post bit is reasonable enough I guess but gez I would have expected the ebay / paypal fee to be half what it was at most.

Next time I think I will sell it all 10% cheaper on Gumtree. I don't know how anyone can make a profit on ebay with all these fee's. Im going to cry if any of the buyers try and scam me.

    • +2

PREZACTLY, ebay and associates have HIGH and fantasy fees

    • Next time I think I will sell it all 10% cheaper on Gumtree

you're assuming you would have obtained the same sale price (less 10%) by listing it somewhere like gumtree etc..

As you had aus post fees that means you went with postage as opposed to pickup only sales, so there goes a large portion of your target market for gumtree buyers..

While ebay fee's are relatively high, its still cheaper than any real life auction house and provides a much bigger target market than any other alternatives

    • In this case I forgive them since the 15% discount on stuff I purchased covered the majority of the fee's. But if they had hoped the 15% discount would encourage new sellers it has done the opposite for me.

      • Isn't postage cost usually covered by the buyer or as the HK sellers do it combined into the final item price with free shipping? Or did you just underestimate the postage costs and charged a flat fee?

        • I'm not an expert on selling on ebay but does it really matter if you charge postage or not? The fee's don't change and people know to look for the cheapest price + postage anyway.

        • I meant that you counted it as an expense even though technically if you accounted for it and the buyer paid for it then you should come out even, so your final earning would be around $828 … which is only slightly less than your 10% off price on gumtree.

    • +1

Funny you should mention this as I've sold several items last week. Two buyers have opened disputes and have unrealistic expectation about what "good condition" should constitute. I advertised the items with best possible description and plenty of photos. They seem to think second hand should be "new". On top of that the huge ebay and paypal fees have put me off massively.

Once I eventually get my stuff back from the buyers, I'll be closing ebay account and like you selling on gumtree or fb groups.

      • get your stuff back? really? Will you actually?

    • Yep. Exactly why I don't sell on eBay any more.

  • Hey guys does anyone have this problem?

I received an email receipt showing me that I bought the items with the 15% discount,
but when I log into paypal it shows the full price being withdrawn from my account.
this has not taken effect on my bank statement yet so I'm not 100% sure but I'm afraid that they cancelled the discount because I bought before 10am?
    what happened?

    • sorry never mind LOL

why does my PayPal transaction show the full amount after the purchase? GOTO PayPal, find the transaction, Click details, you will see a 15% contribution from CBIGSUNDAY courtesy of eBay plus your actual charge to your funding source which makes up the difference. The total needs be 100% because the seller gets 100%. eBay just pays the 15% and you pay the rest.
It should look something like this http://i.imgur.com/afbCvki.jpg (image courtesy of ezarc)
If it doesn't show the coupon in the details then you haven't done it right. You will also see the discount details in the payment confirmation details.

      • wondering if someone requests refund will be the full amount or what he paid

        • What the buyer paid.

  • +3

Bugger - Bought Item, applied code, got discount, paid via PayPal. Thought great until I get an email today from seller saying "Sorry but we want $80- more on top of the $60- already charged for freight. Or we can cancel your order." Before anyone says should've gone with a reputable seller I did - Aus-auc.2010 has screwed me! I am not going to pay $140- freight even with a 15% discount on a $300- item. Bloody wasted the discount dealing with these pricks. Not happy!

    • +3

i would have never thought sellers were able to do that. that's totally stupid.

      • +5

thats annoying. you will just have to neg them then

    • +9

      Can they even do that?
Sounds dodge. The sale is a contract. They can't alter the terms after its paid. I would open an eBay dispute on them. Force them to negotiate in a mediated way.

    • +1

You should ask if eBay can offer you the 15% off again for this special case. That, or either open a dispute to get them to ship it to you.

    • +1

I had similar experience previously with other seller, but Ebay will not be able to do anything other than put notes somewhere. My negative feedback comment against the seller was also greyed out so no one can read it. The seller even harrassed me due to negative feedback. Make sure they refund you before you give them negative feedback

      • What did eBay say exactly? Did you ask them if you could back out from a purchase too?

    • What a (profanity).

Threaten him - "is it really worth risking negative feedback over this?"

  • Got my G710+ from logitechshop and dual PS4 controller charging dock from DSE today from the same courier.

Quite impressed with how quickly they both came.

      Got my one too :)

      That's another $6 off :D

    • Seems not 2%,less than 1%?

      • Yeah 0.9% here. I wonder why, better than nothing though. I'll have to see if there's anything in the terms

    • Sale Value: AUD 431.80
      Expected Cashback: AUD 3.78

      Sale Value: AUD 219.90
      Expected Cashback: AUD 1.94

      Less than 1% rebate,wonder why???

  • Anyone got their Eftpos cards yet?

    • They did say they wont be shipped until next month im pretty sure (being next week)

      • It said estimated delivery by 4 July. That better be the case, because I move on the 11th.

      • who said that? didnt get anything about the delay.

    • Mines shipped, I'm gonna guess it'll arrive by end of Thursday or Friday.
26 cards altogether as well, so… pretty prompt!

      • How did you get 26 cards? $20? or

  • +1

Nice got money from that cash reward site according to email, I thought I screwed it up. :D

  • +2

One of my items didn't get the 15% coupon so I contacted paypal and they gave me 20% off haha.

    "Dear ….,,

    Thank you for contacting PayPal.

I'm glad to inform you that we have credited your PayPal account for AUD $37.00 to compensate the 20% discount that was not applied on your transaction. This credit has been added to your PayPal balance making it up to AUD $xxx

You may login to your PayPal account to confirm the credit of funds.

Should you have further concerns, please let us know.

    Thank you for choosing PayPal.

Does it show a coupon code in the adjusted transaction? You know where I'm going with this…

      • Yeah I definitely checked my paypal transactions.
I bought the 4TB Seagate HDD from Dick Smith Ebay which was listed for $187.06
So got the drive for $150 :)

        http://i.imgur.com/2vX9rmc.jpg

all my other transactions say "Voucher From eBay International AG"
but I just contacted PayPal saying the voucher didn't get applied to all items and it "stuffed up" on the paypal payment confirmation page.

    • Did you just go through the normal Paypal contact us link? I've got the same problem.

      • yeah I contacted them through the online form and they emailed me back. They acknowledged that there was a mistake on their end and gave me a discount.

  • My cc was charged $513.62 for $600 worth of cards. WOooo hoot… Not bad.

Not bad ~$28/hr. Better than minimum wage. (The amount of time I spent ~2am posting) lol

  • Has anyone's PS4 from DS been marked as shipped yet? My expected delivery was 27th June but I dont see that happening :(

    • +1

DS don't mark stuff being shipped. If you get an invoice emailed to you, thats the confirmation its been sent.

      • I see, well they haven't sent that yet. Thanks for letting me know and I guess it will hopefully show up next week!

        • Just tried to contact them to see if mine had been shipped yet and received this automated response:

"dicksmithonline is out of the office until 07/01/2014 and may not be able to respond to your message."

        • +1

Yeah I got that to the other day when I posted my first comment. I got the email/invoice madmouse speaks of today. So hopefully yours isnt to far off.

  • Got charged a cash advance fee from GiftE, paid via Paypal, this is ridiculous.

  • Received my gift cards today from Gifte. Arrived by registered post.

    • Did they send any info in relation to tracking before hand?

      • Just received an email with tracking number for my gift cards today.

  • My 2% from the cashback on top is on its' way- total of 17% of $1200 laptop purchase is a nice saving :)

    • You mean $124 of savings.
