  • Pretty good! Last time they were $1/litre I saw people buying them by the trolley load

    • We bought 2 cartons full :)

There really needs to be a separate section for grocery deals. All I seem to see on OZBB these days are specials on Tim Tams and chocolate bars. Yawn

    • +2

Well you're lucky that this is a special for milk then

    • Tim Tams are so good after you drink milk through them…

Nice … will show up @ Coles at 7AM to grab these … LOL

There's no need to go to that extreme- there'll be plenty there.

  • The local SA catalogue shows $1 per carton, sale starting this Thursday, why is there a difference of 20c to the OP? Don't mind me asking which state you are in?
    Cheers.

    • Hi, I live in Victoria. It is strange that there is a price difference between the states, but I reckon it might be due to Costco opening in Melbourne shortly. I wonder what the price is for the other states?

  • anyone know if this is for WA too?

  • That really depends on the expiry day the daily consumption. We don't want to waste food just because it is cheap, do we.

    • It's long life. And they're only 1Lt bottles.

  • This has my vote given that it is a good deal. Haven't seen it below < $1 for a long time now, this is assuming that it is available at $0.80 across all states. If it is $1, then it is pretty average and there are specials around that pricepoint regularly.

  • VIC's flyer shows $0.80ea.

    • lame? some households might go through these 1 a day. so you save 80c a day! say you buy 3 months worth (they have a very long life), that would be a saving of over $70!?! lame? no. not for everyone? maybe. No reason at all for a -ve.

I always felt fresh milk was better than long life milk. I have never ever bought long life milk in my life.

    • -1

Indeed it is, given that it probably has less preservatives. However fresh milk has a much shorter shelf life. It really depends on your personal needs, if you buy a 2L fresh milk and you are single and only consume 1 cup of coffee a day..then you'd be better off buying long life milk.

there is no preservatives in long life milk. "fresh" milk is heat treated to about 110degC which removes most bacteria but not some hardy spores. Long life milk is heat treated to higher temp, i think 130degC. This means they'll keep indefinitely like canned foods.

its this high temp treatment that destroys some vitamins but not all. technically even "fresh" milk has already lost some of the original vitamins due to treatment

        • I stand corrected, you are right! I remember reading an article in a magazine that said it had preservative such as salt/sugar to help 'preserve' it. Guess it wasn't correct then…

@moo: Q. What are the differences between fresh (pasteurised) and Long Life milk?
            A. It really comes down to the pasteurisation process. Long Life milk is ‘processed’ at 140 degrees for a period of 2-5 seconds which kills all normal milk spoilage bacteria. Pasteurised milk is heated to 72 degrees for 15 seconds which kills pathogenic bacteria, but not all spoilage bacteria. Hence, pasteurised milk sours and goes ‘off’ with time.
As far a nutritional value is concerned there is no significant difference between the two.

If you have never bought long life milk how can you say you feel fresh milk is better?

      • +1

That's why I said "felt". You don't need to try everything in life to know its better better/worse.

  • I'm too tired and lazy to post it, but in todays Coles junkmail it also mentioned "Peters" range of 1L milks (UHT I think) for 93c (half price)

Not sure but think it starts same time…

  • Sounds like a nice deal, but not sure whether I should stock it up or not.

    • Depends on how quick you can drink it. I'd probably buy a carton, should last me for 2 months. Saves me from having to keep going to Coles/Woolies to buy milk every week.

      • They are only long lasting unopened. Once you open them (and they are exposed to the air) it will perish in line with other milk.

Handy to have a spare carton in case of emergencies eg. If you run out of fresh milk or a cyclone hits, cows go on strike, alien landings or nuclear war - just sit down and have a nice cuppa ;-)

  • Just got the catalogue for WA, unfortunately it is selling for $1 here. What a let down :(

    • Gotta send it 'cross the NULLABOR!

  • This is a great deal, however, it's not valid in NSW, therefore, I'm not voting positive or negative for this deal.

NSW gets the Pauls Long Life Full Cream, Trim or Skim Milk 1 Litre for $0.92, save $0.92

  • Why is it more expensive in WA (i know it's only 20c, but come on….) so not fair….

  • I bought six… I pretty much always buy normal milk, but it's handy to keep these for emergencies (i.e. for those rare times I've run out of milk at some weird hour and I can't be bothered going to the shops). :)

  • Wow thats really cheap!

lol…just saw this post this today, and it explains a lot.

i came home last night to find my parents had bought some long life milk… - there were 4 boxes worth sittin on the kitchen floor. thing is, i'm the only one in the house who does drink milk and i was wondering why they'd bought so darn much.

hopefully there's a big sale on tim-tams or cereal…i've got a lot of milk to get through.

  • good thing i live in vic, worth it to stock up several cases for the future
bought 6 boxes today from Coles and got some points for flybuys and gift voucher giveaway too!
