        • that's right, but if you buy the basic console by itself i don't think you get a code

        • Pretty sure when you link your Wii U Network ID to your Club Nintendo account you then get the points and survey for it.
Technically the Nintendo Land bundled (even with the Wii U Basic Skylanders Pack) shows up as Premium Pack.

Here is how you get stars and link your Wii U console (Basic or Premium) http://www.nintendo.com.au/wii-u-link-your-system

Go grab those 500 stars :)

  • Thanks to the OzBargainers, I bought my first game console at Target Paramatta for $178. Just paid $57 for Mario Kart 8 in Target this morning (Click & Collect). Any good recommendations for an external hard drive for this one. I want to download the free game as well.

    • Unless you are thinking of buying heaps of stuff from the eShop you don't really need a hdd.
      Just get a 32, 64gb, 128gb usb stick.

Wii U doesn't allow partial installation from Disks, the only thing it uses the ext hdd / usb stick for is downloads and digital purchases from eShop.

The entire HDD must be formatted for Wii U to use it, you cannot use the HDD for anything else other than Wii U.

1-2TB is overkill. lol. Even downloading every single game on eShop (other than wasting a whole heap of money) you'd struggle to use anywhere near 100gb.

      • Here's what Nintendo says about USB sticks:

Can I use a Flash/Thumb drive as an external storage device?

Because these devices have a limited number of rewrites and are not suited to long-term storage of important game data, we do not recommend the use of Flash/thumb drives as an external storage device solution. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U via the USB port on the console.

Commercial Flash memory has a limit on the number of times you can write over it and we don't recommend flash memory devices for long-term storage of important save data.

        • I think they are just covering their rears, since there is such a wide variety of flash memory out there. Quite alot of bad ones too, where as external hdd's can also fail, however it isn't such a large variable as there is only like 3-4companies who make them.

HDD's also have a similar thing about being powered on and how many times. Read about issues with green drives and their power on counter in SMART.

Internal 8GB or 32GB that they use is flash memory, so are they trying to say that they have made their machine which isn't supposed to last long term? lol.

        • It's also to do with USB flash drive speeds.

A lot of the cheaper ones have abysmal read/write rates that don't even fill 10% of the USB2 max speed. You might not notice the difference when downloading a game as your connection might be around 1 MB/s, but you will notice it with game load times after they are downloaded.

The internal flash memory inside the console would be a lot faster and robust than a cheap USB flash stick equivalent, by factors of 10+ fold.

        • OK good. You've convinced me to try a USB stick instead of a HDD. I just hope the port supplies enough power.

A slow USB stick writing at 4MB/s (it reads faster than it writes, and we should only need it to read) is still equivalent to 3-4X DVD.

        • Well I was trying to convince you not too. A slow to normal USB2.0 hard drive of ~25MB/s is a lot faster than a cheap USB stick at an estimated 15 MB/s for a nasty one.

The optical drive in the Wii U is based on Blu Ray tech so it is a lot faster than DVD speeds.

        • I have USB sticks that exceed the bandwidth of USB2.0.

I wish Nintendo were a bit more forward thinking when designing their console. They tried to keep costs low but the price (when not on special) is still not that much cheaper than a PS4.

        • Get a 32GB Sandisk Ultra for $25 and that will do you fine. Or 64GB Sandisk Ultra for $40 or so.

Don't go cheap and get some $10 32GB stick and you will regret it.

  • I picked mine up yesterday and it’s still in the box, but I did some reading overnight and noted you can access Netflix though the console, or on the gamepad – that’s excellent.

I was wanting a Netflix-enabled device for the kids playroom, as we have it in running in the lounge, and the WiiU therefore ticks that box too. Makes it an even better purchase!

  • Went to Target Melb CBD and got the last one (apparently, unless the guy in the store was lying)

Whose bright idea was it to put the game pad headphone jack on the top side of the pad instead of the bottom?

    • some one who wanted to use it while docked or in a stand.

      • The dock and stand are small. They don't take up the width of the entire gamepad. So the 3.5mm jack does not have to be in the direct center of the bottom. It can be to the side. That is where they are on the Vita and PSP… If your headphone plug is L-shaped, it will be fine, even when docked. Plus the stand gives the gamepad a bit of height and clearance.

If you are playing it with headphones connected to the stand, chances are the cable will obstruct your view of the screen. Yes even if you run the cable behind the gamepad, because the cable will need to go back up to reach your ears.

ok for anyone who missed out on the very limited stock, as someone previously mentioned, you can get one price matched at JB very very easily!

    • Correct, they don't even check if my local Target had stock when I pricematched. Just show them the Target MK8 link on your phone for $57 goodness.
