after the kogan deal, every iPad, iPhone and Macbook deal become prohibitively expensive.

    • +1

Agreed. I wish Kogan will do this deal again soon

      • Kogan + eBay

      • +1

Yes sure but that's no use any more. Grey import v aussie stock anyway.

        • +1

I bought the Kogan deal, whilst cheaper if both it and this were running at the same time I would have bought this hands down. Just personal preference to local stock, worth the $27 odd in my mind.

That said, I don't regret buying the Kogan deal with lack of any such alternative offering at the time.

        • Interestingly, I purchased iPad air from Kogan from that deal, but my iPad happened to be an Aussie stock anyway. (the model no. and the charging adapter confirms it)

  • I think it highly unlikely Kogan and paypal will do the deal again anytime soon. This price is a deal compared to other prices available for this ipad.

  • I'd rather pay less and get a better tablet, the resolution on the old mini is lower than my phone. lol If you are going to buy apple, you should buy current tech, their old gen stuff is way too expensive.

    • More that it's just really slow. Isn't the chip in these a full 2 generations behind the Retina models?

Personally I'd save a bit more.

      • +1

3 generations behind, iPad two tech. :)

        • Exactly why I bought the retina

    • The iPad mini has the same specs as an iPad 2, except smaller. The iPad 2 came out in March 2011.

  • Has anyone done a good guys price match yet? That would work out $277?

Sigh, I'm going to say this again. Yes, I know I'll probably get flamed by all the Apple loving OzBargainers around here, but I feel this is important.

At this price, $289.00, you are getting old technology. It is a product which is behind the current crop of mid-range tablets, let alone premium ones.

Its performance is lacking. Some say you won't notice that performance, that's actually not true, the transition from the A5 to the A7 is phenomenal, due to the different microarchitectures. The A5, the chip in this tablet, is based on an ARM Cortex A9 microarchitecture, which is years old by now, like we're talking about like 2010-2011 technology.

If you don't believe me, here's the Wikipedia article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_A5 - it says March 2011. This is the processor in the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. Very old.

Secondly, the screen resolution is pretty horrible for a premium priced tablet. Say what you want about performance, I get that it doesn't matter to some, but this screen resolution should be a deal-breaker, we have higher pixel densities in basically every modern mid-range tablet, everything is at least 1080p now, if not greater. This is just simply old technology.

    So what do I suggest?

    1. If you really want an Apple product, then just cough up the extra $120 or so and get the iPad mini Retina. You can get it on eGlobal for that much. Yes, not Australian stock, but Apple warranty is still valid, so it doesn't really matter. Yes, it's 33% more expensive. But if you're going to buy a product that you'll be using for such a long period of time, then it'll be worth it. This isn't a typical "incremental" update Apple has, the difference between the first and second generation iPad minis are huge, this is not like an iPad 3 -> iPad 4 update.

    2. If you just want a nice, small, fast, good quality tablet to browse the net around the house and do all the regular things. Consider the 2013 Nexus 7. It's faster, has a 1080p screen, lighter (albeit smaller), it's also extremely well built, just like the iPad mini and it's also cheaper. Yes, you get a current generation product, which is comparable with Apple's Retina iPad mini for cheaper than this. Check out Amazon, $227 USD + shipping for the 16GB model. On sale, they will be even cheaper, just search for it on OzBargain and see how often they go on sale. Yes, it's not Apple, but hey, for MOST people, it will do EXACTLY the same things. Alternatively, for the same price, the 32GB Nexus 7 is $298 at Harvey Norman.

I know people might hate this, but the truth is, this isn't great value. On one front, you have the vastly superior iPad mini retina for a reasonable amount more. On the other front, you the cheaper Nexus 7 2013, which is faster, has a better screen and is actually current generation.

That's just my two cents :)

I am an Apple fan boy, and I approve of this message.

    • You also could factor in that tabs like the n7 2013 model are due to be replaced soon. There's tabs like the Mi Pad that are around the $300 mark that have significantly faster processors than the N7. To put it into perspective the N7 scores around 20k on anTuTu, iPad mini scores around 13k, while the iPad mini retina scores around 28k, the Mi Pad scores around 42k. So for a similar price to this tab, you can get a tab with same resolution screen as the best iPads and about triple the speed of this iPad mini according to anTuTu. Of coarse benchmarks aren't everything, and for people already heavily invested in apple ecosystem they'll probably prefer to keep with apple, hence pay a bit more and get the latest apple tech with retina display that offers around double the performance for slightly bit more.

I would go so far as to say that performance isn't even the MOST important difference between the 1st gen and 2nd gen iPad mini. I would say that the biggest difference is screen resolution. Spend some time reading on the 1st gen one and then spend a bit of time reading on a Nexus 7 2013 or the 2nd gen iPad mini and you'll see a massive difference.

I can completely understand that there are people who simply just want a tablet to browse the web, read e-books, watch movies and check the weather and that to them performance is not important, screen resolution is, however.

really appreciate the time you took to make an informative, well-reasoned comment. only an utter moron would think to neg you.

my mum was thinking about getting an ipad mini like mine after hearing about the kogan deal. (i ended up getting a retina instead of the 1st gen ipad mini.) she's not the type to keep updating her tech - and neither am i - and i've already told her to stay the hell away from apple products :D

        Thanks!

But yeah, I completely agree with you. Often there is merit to getting something that is slightly last gen, we all do it sometimes when it comes to technology, but that's only when there isn't that great of a difference or when the price difference is substantially large enough to offset those differences.

I really wish other tablets got more exposure though. In terms of phones, Apple's market share has really dwindled because other people now have very recognised phones. You go around and the majority of the population will be able to name the Galaxy S series, probably the a couple of HTC phones, maybe the Nokia Lumina series…etc.

With tablets though, I doubt that most people are even aware that the iPad has competitors and that Android is a genuine competitor. A lot of people still seeing Android as a platform that is lacking in apps (despite pretty much most useful apps being cross-platform) and being unstable.

Goes to show how good Apple's marketing strategies are though. It's almost funny to me how quickly people have forgotten about "Antennagate" with the iPhone 4, but everyone seems to remember reviews back in 2010 saying Android isn't a mature platform, isn't stable…etc.

  • just got a price match at officeworks, paid $260.10. they were saying "oh, we probably don't have stock" but i insisted and asked them to check stock on both colours. they seemed grumpier than grumpy cat :)

    • Ow has it for the same price (online), do they price beat it even if it's the same price?
      Cheers

      • i'd be very surprised if they were still selling it for $298 1 week later..

        • You mean target? They still have it for 298 click and collect only. Office works' price has been 298 for a while now. But I don't know prices in the shop.
          Cheers

        • @Efendy:

You mean target? They still have it for 298 click and collect only.

          ??
289 click and collect but it's sold out anyway

        • @tdw:

Oh, I thought you could still order it as it's sold out only online but could be still available through click & collect. I see it now.
          Thanks
