    https://joscor.com/2013/03/transcend-storejet-1tb-external-d…

Looks like a native SATA with a USB adaptor.

    • aren't all externals?

      • +8

        Not WD.

        • That's good to know

        • +1

          @picket23:

that is important to know, because hdd recovery is a pain in the butt with WD drives

        • @annoynimous:
And I thought I could use any external as an internal which is what I have ended up doing with half of the external drives I have bought.

Speaking of data recovery though, I've tried to get data off a hard drive I formatted accidentally a while ago but the two programs I used have not been able to do the job. Recuva was one I can't remember the other one now. Most files are detected with a deep scan, but when I recover them they don't work (media files mainly) Do you have any product recommendations for formatted drives?

        • @picket23: Runtime GetDataBack for NTFS or FAT - best recovery software you'll ever use :)

        • @XeSSiV:

+1 i used getdataback for my old hdd from desktop. it wasn't deleted though, just i couldtn turn on the OS and yeah… i couldn't view certain files i think it was corruptingor whatever, but ran it and copied what i could before i ripped the HDD out.

So "Native sata" drives with a usb controller basically work so that you can rip out the HDD and use as a normal hard drive? If you buy western digitals they conk out once the controller/connector no longer works?

I assume that seagate and samsung external portable 2.5"" HDd's therefore can all be ripped out and connected in a new external case if something goes wrong?

    Total Before Tax: $107.34

      Item Subtotal: AUD 111.09
      Shipping & Handling: AUD 8.17
      Total Before Tax: AUD 119.26

      Order Total: AUD 119.26

      • Just for reference i also got to about $119.98 AUD.
GOing to leave it in native USD and pay by 28 degrees, hoping it'll be alot cheaper. will report back. used it fro the other seagate 2gb deal too, yet to see it come through on credit card statement though.

$107.34 if in USD. Seems if you buy the 1TB disk it' sonly an extra $2.30 or so delivery. so tempting… but better try out transcend to see if i like it first. plus you get caried away and could end up with 4,5,6 drives overdoing it…hopefully not :P

        • Ok came up $115.31 AUD on my credit card. Savings of $4.67 from accepting amazon's conversion rate haha.

EMoral of story, if buying online use your 28 degrees card or a credit card that translates forex at good rates.. not the amazon converter! Adds up for bigger purchases - say you were buying a mobile, im' sure it'd be like $15-20+ easily in that case.

Let me tell you a story about this EHH. This hard drive was my first external hard drive. 360GB version with the same design, rubber and hard for drops and spills. Excellent hard drive I've had it for 5 years and still going extremely strong! Would recommend this to anyone all day every day. I paid $179 back than, this price is simply amazing.

    • +4

      @Moots

Wasnt going to buy one until i read your comment. Thats excellent to hear about the reliability of the drive.

  • +1

Welp, guess I can use it to back up my back up. Then drop it off the roof, run over it in my car and still be able to use it.

Just couldn't say no for that price. The Lacie rugged 1TB drives are more expensive and I've had a few fail around the 1 year mark (~100gb write a day, so they are being pushed).

    • +2

Just couldn't say no for that price.

      • +1

        whats its normal price?

Are you trying to impersonate jv

        • +1

umm no? i'm just asking a question… lol

  • How does this compare with the SanDisk one posted a few days ago?

    • +1

It's ruggedised, so it should be a lot more durable (e.g. far less likely to break if it falls off the table).

I find it a bit suspect that it doesn't seem to specify any particular standard, safe drop distance, etc. - I've ordered ruggedised RDX drives before and they tend to specify stuff like "1m drop onto concrete".

    • I happen to own a 1.5TB variant of that drive and i would not buy it again, it is fairly great overall and has not failed my once through the 4 drops i have had with it but for some reason when i unplug it without ejecting it properly first (on my macbook pro) the next time i plug it back in i will have to wait anywhere from about 5-7 min for it to become recognised again and for that reason i would strongly suggest to pick up the Transcend drive.

      • Does that not happen with other drives? The HDD manufacturer really shouldn't affect (or care about) ejection before unplugging; that's supposed to be a software/filesystem thing.

  • +2

    Is it bulletproof?

    • +2

      No.

    • +4

The ioSafe Rugged Portable took 10 shells from a Remington 12-gauge and gave no sh*ts about it. Live Demo.

      • I'm going to go out on a limb and say that even birdshot would penetrate the plastic Transcend drive.

It's not fair using that as a test anyway as only Dick Cheney goes around shooting people with birdshot.

Put a sabot round into the 12 gauge and then see how it goes against the ioSafe.

        • +3

Sabot rounds? Who are you, FPSRussia?

It's not supposed to be a substitute for a trauma plate in a Kevlar vest, to enable you to go wandering around Kabul with a silver square on your chest like you're playing Nerf Laser Tag in a warzone; that demonstration was more about showcasing the ioSafe's survivability against extreme, puncture-type impacts.

You know like dropping it onto an inconveniently-placed, 16th-century Claymore or accidentally smearing it with meat sauce during a Safari trip through a lion habitat; you know, real-world scenarios.

Besides, you never know when you could be caught out in the Yukon with your ioSafe and some crazy, old Canadian hunter mistakes for it an Albatross.

  • +3

    1TB on my 28 degrees card = $68.58 AU

    (standard shipping on Amazon)

    • are all transends on sale? what's the normal rough RRP price?

  • +1

I'm waiting for a drive that's NASA approved. If you're going to get some over-the-top fantasy standard that normal people don't need then heck, you may as well go all out.

    • +1

So what it explodes due to unrealistic expectations regarding what its hardware is capable of :)

    • The ioSafe Rugged Portable I linked to above is your answer.

      • They seem hard to get. Sold out in most places.

  • Nice, got one. Thanks OP.

  • +1

Is there any drawbacks to getting this instead for $5US less?
    http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Canvio-Basics-Portable-HDTB220…

    • +3

Military-Grade Shock Resistance is the major advantage (depending on how you normally use it…)
and the price is really good, you may only get the 1Tb version here at this price!
the toshiba can be bought very cheap locally.

    • +1

You can take it to a warzone and not worry about data loss

  • DAMN. I got a WD 2TB at $140 or so just earlier. I've been hearing good things about WD(in comparison to Seagate).

    • Seagate are to HDD what Acer are to laptop…

      • lol are acer that bad? Then again i notice they do the cheapies and i don't use acer anymore after my netbook… i've loved my asus laptop i'm on now though. don't know if asus is the equivalent of transcend or WD, actually I don't even know who's considered the 'best' of hdd's… brand wise. or if i just got lucky with my asus.

I guess i just know those lacie, toshiba, verbatim etc are considered second rung below WD, seagate, transcend in terms of brand image quality?

        COrrect me if i'm wrong.

  • Can anyone find any information on what "Military-Grade Shock Resistance" means, exactly? Any max safe drop distances, max shocks, etc.? The max shock at least is completely standard info for internal HDDs, and other ruggedisted HDDs (e.g. the HP RDX cartridges) say things like "1m drop onto concrete floor".

Without specifics, I'm not sure I can trust the thing, especially if it does fail and comes to warranty claim.

    • +2

      @Yomangetthis found it: MIL-STD-810

it’s also somewhat ruggedised with it drop-proof to military standard 810F Meth.516.5 Proc.IV Transit Drop, which specifies that the subject is dropped on each face, edge and corner, for a total of 26 drops, from a height of 122cm (4ft)

      source

      Looks nice. Time to order!

  • +2

I paid $100 for a 2GB Transcend USB stick back when they were relatively new to the market (hence price point). I'm still using that stick to this day, even enduring a few rounds in the washing machine. So I trust this brand.

    Thanks OP. Ordered

Would this survive a tank shell? Asking for a friend.

  • Is the drive 5400rpm?

Just checked the disassembly review - appears so, Seagate Momentus

    • Seagate momentus has 2tb? Or is that the samsung spinpoint?

  • +1

Not sure if I want to thank you OP since I bought one, but it was after having a bit of a spree in the Man. Utd. store the other day. :(

me too OP. thanks very much for sharing :)

  • Two on the go. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP, bought 1 T hdd and 32 gb usb stick for US$10.99…nice

    • woah. $11 32GB USB? didn't see that… transcend also?

Wonder if you can get a decent 64gb USB stick these days for < $20-25 usd?

  • Does anyone know what time (in AEST) the amazon deal of the day usually expires?

  • can someone persuade me to buy this? i already have 3 HDD which are quite old though - back in the day when 500gb was top of the line.

    • +2

can someone persuade me to buy this

you really need to buy this !! trust me

    • Backup all of them?

  • +6

    Bought one.
I knew I should have just gone to bed and not looked on this site.
    Doh!

  • +1

Man….is this hd more reliable than WD?
    So tempted

  • Gees this has some very bad reviews (alongside lots of good reviews) but it makes me wonder….

  • +1

Just bought 1tb USD$64.28 delivered. Cheapest ever on camelcamelcamel.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MNGQ6C/ref=oh_aui_detai…

  • Thanks OP.. ordered 2…
just as my 3TB WD external drive failed….

I'll be setting up CCC this time..

  • Thanks OP. Bought two. Replacing a crapped out WD Passport.

  • Thanks OP! Got one!

  • +2

    resisted while i could..got one eventually..cheers

  • thanks,

    bought a 1TB drive to replace my ageing 3.5" 500GB drive :)

  • +2

just wondering.. what price does the 2tb and 1tb drives normally sell for? I've never seen this brand etc.

So people said WD and seagate on one upper level, and below it the rebadged cheaper lacies, toshibas, verbatim?? Or are they all, including transcend rebadged hard drives say seagate manufactured into a transcend case? Not sure how these things work so just asking - thanks.

Just bought the 2TB seagate from the other day as well. NOt sure if I should grab this… haven't received the amazon 2tb seagate yet so I was abit worried about how they deliver i.e. if they package it safely for the shipping across.. guess this shock resistant one wouldn't have an issue with shipping (physical safety wise lol).

So overall from comments about the transcend brand appear positive? has anyone actually looked into reputable reviews on this specific model?

    • Amazon is pretty safe. I got mine within 15 days. Box is still intact and great condition. I tore it out and took the internal hdd to install to my macbook pro as secondary storage (primary being an SSD). So far so good!

      • Did amazon pack it in special padded boxing etc, or did they just wrap up the original boxed good in their envelope/mailing pack and send it out to you?

  • Bought 2TB even though don't need another HD. Thanks OP

  • Got one- for no real reason.

  • I've also had one of their 320Gb USB 2.0 models for about 6+ years and its super reliable and never missed a beat. Same style design and drop-safe testing.

Can't say the same for my WD My Passport 1TB drive which crapped its pants about a month after getting it.
Although I will only buy WD internal drives as I have never had an issue with those, but 2 WD 2.5" externals had problems.

    • any experience with samsungs? got a 750gb one back a few years… it's a backup for data but hence why i was worried and considering buying this hdd, as well as i just bought the amazon seagate hdd deal from a day or two ago.

  • Thanks OP. Bought one!

  • +2

    Thanks OP!
Got one, my 4th ext HDD.

$115.31 for me ! Gotta get that forex timing right ozber! :P
