Hungry Jacks Hackburger: BBQ Cheeseburger w/ ALL Extras (except Cheese and Bacon) ONLY $2

1691

So, I was talking to a friend about OzBargain - He works at Hungry Jacks - He knows a weakness in the Hungry Jacks system and was keen to share. Here it is:

Step 1 - Order BBQ Cheeseburger for $2.00 or Double BBQ Cheeseburger for $3.00 or Triple BBQ Cheeseburger for $4.00
Step 2 - IMPORTANT - Say 'Can I please add on Angry Onions or Onion Rings' (This comes up on the till as 'NO CHARGE' and then the operator is unable to add any extra charge to your burger from here on in)
Step 3 - Say 'Can I also add Lettuce, Pickles, Tomato, Beetroot and Onion and these will all be added to your burger FOR FREE!
Step 4 - Operator will put the MAMMOTH burger into a bag
Step 5 - Lunch sorted.

Bargain explained - BBQ Cheeseburger is the best value burger on the HJ's menu in my mate's opinion. This works with ALL burgers.

Enjoy!

PS - It might be possible to combine this deal with the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/154540 deal in SA - this would be a $1 Cheeseburger with ALL extras!

    That's the spirit! :)

  • +2

Will this work in QLD? Is it nation-wide or only VIC?

  • +6

Fairly sure this is intentional, I have for as long as I remember added extras to my burger for no charge.

It varies from store to store as well. Some will limit you to two free extras, whilst at some stores you can go wild.

This is why I never go to McDonald's anymore, though. You simply can't beat the value.

      I want to try this

but my pride is having conflicts with my frugality

      • +14

Careful, comments like this will get you kicked off ozbargain. True ozbargainers have no shame

      • +3

My pride is tellin' me no…..
        But my body,
        My body's tellin' me yes

        • +1

With a name like that I was sure you you'd be saying yes.

  • +26

I'm pretty sure this is going to result in an update to their POS systems.

This is what me and my friend were afraid of! Shhh….

          when is the Ozbargainwhitehat conference?

this reminds me of that event cinemas bug i posted a year ago that allowed people to book Hobbit boxing day advanced screening 4k 3d vmax tickets for $10

forced them to patch the bug but saved a heap of people a ton of money

    • this is why it should be in the forum instead! ;P

  • +8

can you add another patty and cheese after the "no charge" ? :P

Getting in my car now for Victoria…..Good Bye Perth!

    • +4

Get out while you can, if you can.

    • +3

Err don't they have the same menu in WA… Should work here as well.

      • +4

In WA there's no need to add the angry onions or onion rings here.

Just ask for a $2 Cheeseburger with Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Mayo, Ketchup etc.
There's no charge at all for extra salad or condiments and never has been.

@mrgq: why are you taking the scenic route from WA to Victoria?

  • +2

    Has anyone actually tried this?

    • +1

I ordered it as per above and got charged 30c for the upgrades.
The guy taking the order stated apologetically that there would be a small extra charge

What I got charged for was
      $10.60

      $6.30 -two whopper Tuesday Deal
      $4.00 -2 x $2 BBQ Cheese Burgers
$0.30 -All the upgrades (I guess 2 x angry onions is 30c). I got lettuce, beetroot, tomato, pickles.

My burger was made fresh :-)

Is the $1 cheeseburger offer available nationwide or just SA? I thought I'd seen it advertised here in VIC?!!?!? Can anyone help?

  • +50

You're not exploiting the system in anyway, all you're doing is annoying the hell out of the person taking your order and the person making your burger.

We don't charge anything for any sauces, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, jalapenos or beetroot.

Please don't do it this way, it means that your server has to remember to tell the person making your burger personally and the person making the burger has to remember to make it that way when your burger is next.

Our motto is 'have it your way' We know what you're doing and we really don't mind.

What we do mind about is our food wastage numbers being thrown of whack because we can't account of the free salads.

    TL;DR,
Just ask, don't cheat. We won't charge you anyway.

    • +7

That must be VIC only, I always get charged extra for addons in QLD regardless of the burger

      • +3

Any QLD associates care to comment on the process/charges in QLD?

Obviously it would involve ending the sentence in "Ay?".

        • +5

but the person would be more polite, hey.

        • +3

I always though that was a Kiwi thing, hey? Perhaps the heavy population of Kiwi's up in Queensland has influenced the locals, hey?

        • @The General:
That me be true, hey. or is that hey bro.

      • +3

I work in QLD, unless you're going to a franchised store (of which there aren't many and your results may vary) you definitely shouldn't be charged for extra salads.

Obviously bacon, cheese, egg and beef will cost you extra.

Which store are you going to?

        • +1

what are the franchised stores, got a list for the Gold coast please.

        • Any HJ store in Cairns, QLD.

        • +1

@PVA: The Hungry Jacks in Australia fair will charge you for any extra salads

        • @Orpheus:

yep, thats what happened to me. Just wondering what other Gold Coasts wont charge for lettuce and tomato.

        • +8

          @PVA:

Alright guys, I haven't found an actual list of every store, this is all I can come up with without the HJ Intranet.

The majority of Hungry Jack's® restaurants in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide are operated by our company operations, Hungry Jack's Pty Ltd. All Hungry Jack's® restaurants in Perth are company owned, and therefore we will not currently be franchising in this market.

That said, the only franchise stores I know of are the Brisbane Airport and Tweed Heads in the QLD area.

I will update when I know more.

        • Edit: You have just answered my question above. Thanks

        • What's "Australia Fair"?

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:
Adding "advance" at front will make the national anthem.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:
shopping centre on the gold coast.

        • "Australia Fare" is a Double Roadkill Emu/Kanga with pineapple and beetroot Whopper on a Vietcong bun

    • +1

is that official HJ code as I have asked for just lettuce on a normal cheeseburger in Qld (Aust Fair) and was charged extra, can't remember how much though it was about 6 months ago.

      • +17

For every store I've worked at, yes. I'll be at uni in around 30 mins to check up on the proper procedure and post it here, guys.

        • +2

          Thank you sir.

        • +13

          You're doing the Lord's work.

        • +4

          @PVA:

I'm yet to find anything that explicitly says that salads must be free in any of the training materials.

          I'll keep digging.

I can definitely 110% confirm that HJ Ipswich, Yamanto, Goodna and Kedron will not charge you for any extra salads.

        • +1

          @McScotty:
          110% that's unpossible

        • @McScotty:
Thanks, please try to find a Gold Coast store for me.

        • Thanks Scotty, you're a top bloke! Humorously named too, given that you work at HJ?!? Not some kinda' zany fast-food double-agent are ya'?

        • @jubba:

It's a good thing he's at uni then, obviously hasn't gotten to that part yet though.

        • I'll be at uni in around 30 mins to check up on the proper procedure and post it here, guys.

Is there a Hungry Jacks University? Where do i sign up? :)

    • +3

Cool. I can now order a McScotty burger from HJs…

  • +4

Wasn't this mentioned in the Aussie Battler Burger post? except without the Angry Onions/Onion Rings? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/132878

Edit: I take that back, there was mention of the free angry onions in the comments, even talking about adding Angry Onions to a Sundae

  • +2

Nice for someone from HJ to step in and clarify
    Appreciated.

    • +1

McScotty is on the way to Uni!

      • +4

Just grabbing my coffe and I'll jump on my laptop.

      • Hope its not MacD's Uni

  • +2

So does this mean I can get onion rings added into my burger and it will always be no charge?!?!?!

    • +1

Thanks for paraphrasing everything thats just been said

      • +1

I think that deal alone is worth 2000+ upvotes - ignore the salad items

        • Yeah I want to clarify; order any cheeseburger, then say "Can I please add an angry onions", and the angry onions is free? If that's true, it would make me the absolute opposite of angry. Surely it can't be true. Can you confirm this Mr Mc Scotty sir? If it is true, why is it true? Is it an ongoing promotion they just decided to keep available, or a register-error/loophole, or what ?!? I'm so confused… But if this is true, I'm never going to maccas again. I love those damn angry onions.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:
          It's free :)

        • +1

          @GnarlyKnuckles:

Angry Onions are treated like salad at Hungry Jacks, I have no idea why but yes, they are free to add to your burger.

No loophole, delicious and free. :)

  • +2

But cheese and bacon are the only extras worth getting…

  • This or KFC 9.95 Tuesday????

    • +14

      have both, you deserve it

  • +3

Will be trying this for lunch today. Thanks.

  • +2

I did this all the time with the $2 HJ breakfast muffins, add lettuce, tomato, sauce. with no charge

  • +2

Don't see how this is a deal, Hungry Jack's has never ever charged extra for heavy add ons to burgers for years.

    • not all stores are free.

      • +1

Only some of the franchise owned stores charge, but Hungry Jacks itself has always had free heavy and extra whatever add ons.

        • thats right, not all HJ stores are free.

        • +1

@PVA: Franchise stores aren't owned by HJ

        • @Orpheus:
but they are still Hungry Jacks stores though, I dont go in and buy a big mac, I buy hungry jacks food - signs everywhere HJ. I know some are franchised but they are still HJ stores.
A bit like Telstra stores, not all are Telstra owned but you still go to them to buy Telstra products.

    • Maroochydore, QLD charges

      • which one? The one in the plaza, or next to the courthouse.

    • On the contrary Orphers, If it's all true, particularly the thing about the free onion rings, then it's the deal of teh century. IMHO. Thanks a squillion OP, and equally, Mr McScotty for providing some good info/details from the inside. What are you studying anyway Mr McScotty? HRM or something like that maybe?

  • +1

is it free to add a vegetarian patty to this combo? if not, how much would it cost?

    • +2

doubt any patty would be classes as a salad

      • do you know what the cost of the vegetarian patty by itself then?

        • +2

Don't quote me because I haven't sold a vegie patty on its own in a while but you're looking at around $1-$2.

That said, if you explain that you're a vegetarian the cashier may let you swap the beef for vegie for free. (This is completely up to the server and not an official procedure, but I would not have any problems doing it.)

    • It would not be free. I've been asked this before, but us cashiers usually just run to ask the manager. The veggie patty is a bigger patty than the cheeseburger patty, so you will definitely be charged extra (unless the manager is super nice)

  • +1

A friend of mine told me about the free salads but the one time qe had hungry jacks together and used the drive thru, they charged extra for salads

  • +2

I did try to add salad to a cheese burger but was told to get the junior whopper instead. I think it really depends on who is serving you.

    • +10

If you've tried to make your username today's date you're off by two.

    • +9

Be careful mate, you're violating the social media policy. Why would you ever tell people that an employee of ours thinks they're a cheap b*****d?

To clarify, we really don't care what you do with your burgers, just be honest and know what you want before you start ordering. :)

      • +3

Wait, HJ's official view is that they think I'm a cheap b*****d?

I'm outraged. Just for that I'm only going to eat there like seven or eight more times this week.

        • +14

Yes, MattyD of ozbargain. You specifically are known as a cheap b*****d to all of Hungry Jacks' and it's subsidiaries. There are official documents and memos available to all employees that explicitly educate on how cheap you really are.

        • Yes, and get double free lettuce just to show'em :)

        • @McScotty: Great, now OzBargainers need to exclusively eat at Hungry Jacks just to keep their reputation up. Bye bye home cooked meals made from the cheapest of ingredients.

      • +2

I'm pretty sure he made a throwaway just to say that.

  • Was at HJ's last week and was sad to find that the $2 large Sunday has been replaced by a Storm.

Any Associates know whether we can still order them for the cheap price?

    • +13

You can't, officially. I'm working on a big post with all my tips and tricks including how to get $2 large sundaes.

      • +7

Ahhh, I see tightass has a rival

        • +3

Heheheh, it'll be "lap-tops at dawn"… and who will be the ultimate winners? Us OBs. Us.("whooosh" goes a tumble-weed, rolling by)

    • You can ask for a storm (cookies and cream/flakes/m&ms) and ask them to add the sundae topping. They MIGHT charge you an extra 50c for the extra topping but it depends on the cashier or manager.

  • Also does HJ's advertise the current Twosdays offer anywhere? Couldn't find it on their website.

Unless it's Bacon Deluxe's it isn't worth the drive and I'd rather just buy a cheap Tuesday Pizza.

  • +1

This is old news isn't it?
Search back 6 months ago for turning a $2 cheese burger into a Whopper Jnr.
I definitely read about it on here around the time people were posting $1.70 McFlurries and stuff like that.

  • +2

Would be too afraid to attempt this, lest the worker decides to put some of his 'special sauce' on my meal.
