For those that had no idea what this was: http://www.kineticsand.com.au/ (awesome demo video on it)

Didnt even know this stuff existed, thanks for posting… looks fun!

  • Like OP said, my kids love playing with it too!
But can we update the link to the actual page 21 that the deal is listed on.

A DIY version, not quite the same but heaps cheaper.

    http://www.playbasedlearning.com.au/2011/03/moon-sand-recipe…

    • I'll be honest, this looks a bit second rate to me compared to the store bought product.

      • Yep and when I scoured the interwebs recently for a diy version - everybody agreed that moon-sand and other attempts were simply inferior.

All my research suggested that there's something proprietary about kinetic sand that the diy community hasn't been able to crack yet.

  • Wow thats some mind blowing stuff. I am getting some for my kids…

  • +1

My wife sells the stuff through Buy My Things on facebook .. I'm pretty sure they sell it much cheaper, but pick up is in Sydney (Jannali and Mt Colah) unless you want to pay delivery from them. Depends on how much you get buying from Spotlight might be cheaper.

    • +3

You're doing your wife a bit of a disservice by mentioning a possibly cheaper alternative in the comments of a front page listing on Ozbargain, and not providing a link or instructions on how to find it.

      • +2

He's definitely not getting any loving tonight lol

      • +1

        He's a true Ozbargainer…

        • +5

Yeah, you know the saying, "bros before h-" oh anyway, you know the saying.

  • +3

Whoa! Never knew it existed, thanks OP!

Might get a few kilos and try it in the cat litter box :p

    • +1

Let us know how that goes! It might be cheaper than clay clumping litter ?

Can I become a VIP member to get this price in store? And is that free?

    • +1

from the catalogue it looks like you need to be a VIP member to get the price.

Yes it's free, I just joined and they will email you a temporary card to your email.
Just go to their homepage and bottom right corner is the link to Register As a VIP.

      • Bought one at $19.99 coz I don't want to be a member… yeah I'm too stubborn.

Any local Sydney shop that sells 5KG one? Preferably not more than $45. :D

  • +2

If you're going to buy a few kilos, they also have a 5kg box that works out to be cheaper. Not sure if spotlight will have the 5kg version but you can get it from kidstuff for $55

I came back from the US yesterday and had fun playing with this stuff in store, but it was much more expensive than this, enough to make me walk away without purchasing.

Now here I am, OzBargain has come through as it always does :) Thanks.

Seriously $16 for a kilo of sand? Yer I know they mixed a bit of cornflour in it to stay moist but its still basically sand.

I can get some nice steaks for less than $16/kilo

    • +10

      … and?

Saffron is approx. $45,000 per kilo so you must REALLY hate that stuff!

    • +1

Is it cornflour, anyone tried to make their own?

      • The secret ingredient is unicorn spoof.

        • +2

I googled this, I'm not sure that's correct. Found some very interesting pictures though.

      • I tried a few months ago starting with small cornflour concentration and gradually increasing in beach sand. It didn't turn out anything like this.

    • somehow I dont think your kids will enjoy squeezing and playing with raw steak… but if they do, they might need help.

      • His kids might be werewolves….!

    • BUT is your steak gluten free? I laughed when I saw that in the video…

  • Try it before you dismiss it :) This is no ordinary sand… and great for kids (big and small) in winter because they can use it inside and it clumps back together when it comes time for clean up.

    • What happens to it in Summer?!

You slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, and slap on a hat!!!

      • +1

        I'll be a … happy snowman?

    • That's the main reason to get I think, easy to clean up after playing inside the house.

I was wondering how this sand compare to play doh?

  • who on earth would want this?

    • +6

      KIDS… KIDS… KIDS… KIDS… KIDS!!!
Edit: And parents making pretty patterns in the sand with rollers, stamps and matchbox trucks!!!

  • Anyone know of any stackable Spotlight $5.00 off/$10.00 coupons floating around which would make this a steal??? I couldn't find any.

  • +2

Don't forget if spending over $50 might as well grab the Get Creative magazine from counter for $1 to use the $10 off $50 spend voucher.

  • Is it tasty?

    • +1

Ok, but a bit gritty. …

  • I paid $80 for this stuff in Jan. Kids love it.

I did not know what kinetic sand was half an hour ago but now I think my life would be incomplete without it

polydimethyl siloxane is the magic part or you can just mix in some McDonalds nuggets and fries as that has it too!!

I'll join the club and vouch for this stuff too - we use it at school with the kids, each class has a tub of it. Looks like normal sand, but is very freaky … clumps together, but doesn't stick to anything but itself. You can pack it into a hard ball for example, then break it in half and it "dissolves" back into loose sand.

Doesn't dry out either - if it gets wet, you can "dry" it out back to its original state.

It was quite amusing watching many of our staff play with it when we first got it in - a good therapy tool for those hyper kids that need something to play with to calm down.

  • Saw this on 'The Living Room- Hot or Not' a few mths back. This is some amazing stuff!

    Doesn't dry out either

What happens if I stick it in the oven at 230 degrees? Crunchy, chewy sand biscuits?

  • Anyone who owns this sand. I have two girls….should I just get two 1kg boxes from spotlight? Or order a 5kg box $60 delivered from ebay??…..will 2 kg be enough for 2 girls from your experience?….thanks in advance :-)

    • We have a 2yo boy and we've put a kilo into a big flat rectangular plastic cake type container similar to this, only longer. We keep the sand and a few different toy rollers and matchbox trucks in it that he can play with inside on the ground or on his table. That way it keeps the majority of it confined, and we can easily pack it up afterwards.

  • If you have more than 1 kid I would recommended the bigger box. There are also special toys that you can buy to make sandcastles etc. I bought this in May for my 4 year old son's Birthday and he has played with it everyday since. I got a cheap plastic storage container from the Reject shop to store it in. It would make a great Christmas present :)

    • Thank you, I just ordered 5kg $59.50 delivered :-)

  • Tired Spotlight Noarlunga yesterday afternoon just after lunch and they were sold out and was advised all SA stores were the same.

  • Queanbeyan (only store within driving distance for ACT) is also sold out.

Good thing with Spotlight is that you can call their customer service department and they'll organise stock to be delivered (to the store you want or to your home Im not sure, but at least you can buy it at sale price).

Havent tried it yet, but lady at store said thats how it normally works.

  • Got a box over the weekend, it was the last one left at Spotlight Box Hill
found that is was $24.95 at other places, so it was a great deal!!
    thanks for the post Natv!

    • Mrs got the last one from Frankston on Saturday.
Story goes… There was a lady playing with the display stuff as my Mrs walked up, saw the last one sitting on the shelf and grabbed it. Lady then realised and tried saying that it should be hers!
Apparently they've ran out once already, got more stock in, and will be getting more again this week anyway!

  • Spotlight cannington WA just got stock in, I had 1 held aside, not sure how many are left or if they were all rainchecked
