was good until i saw 'Mains powered' i need one USB powered.

    great deal though op :)

    • -3

i prefer the USB powered too, have had 3 main powered HDD's fail on me in the past 2 years :(

      Good deal though, cheers OP.

      • +15

It's extremely unlikely being mains powered had anything to do with the failure; so don;t let that sway anyone.
Regardless, the USB powered one are much more convenient.

      • +6

You should try popping the harddrive out of the enclosure, see if it will run as an internal. I have had a lot of enclosures die while the harddrive itself is dandy.

    • +5

Then you'll need to pay $130+

Sure, 'portable' externals are much better… but they're much more expensive, and much more limited in capacity.

For cheap, mass storage, 'desktop' externals have no competition.

      • yeh i know …it's purely for convenience …got a few mains one but need one for backup between computers and laptops so it needs to be portable :)

      • 2TB portable HDDs have been down to $99 in some recent deals. None at the moment, though.

  • Great price. I have 2 already, but they feel too small already.

  • Good way to get a cheap 2tb bare drive.

    • +15

was this meant to be funny?

      • +7

I gotta admit, it was so lame it actually was funny lol

  • Can't wait til we get deals on the 5tb

  • ahhaa. thats $20 discount per order.

    • Can you do multiple orders then? LOL

  • +3

cheaper than buying the bare drive by at least $10. and saves a trip to the shops :) thanks OP.

  • Good deal ! :)

  • I watch movies on my drive, plugged straight into the tv. I have been using a USB drive, but half way through a movie, the sound doesn't sinc with the video.
Was told it was due to the drive being oldish and usb powered.
Is it likey to happen on this drive?

    Thanks

    • -2

Go USB powered for your TV instead of a external powered drive like this one

    • +2

No, it isn't the drive causing the sync issues. Or that it is old.

    • +1

You were misinformed. The drive is delivering video & sound together, in one package. Even a 10y/o 80GB drive can deliver a FullHD 'bluray' movie fine.

It can be the decoding or encoding that's the problem. Try playing it on another device, and/or grab another copy.

    • Thanks everyone…

  • Anyone know what is the internal drive inside this enclosure?

    Is it a 5900RPM or 7200RPM?

And the model inside? ST2000dl003 OR ST2000dm001?

    Thanks,
    K.

  • +2

Wii U ext drive prefers main power, rather than USB power.

  • +1

anyone know if we can rip these apart and use them as internal drives?

    • +3

yep has been the case always :P

      • +4

If you're looking to use this internally… you might have a case.

        • +3

          thinking outside the box

        • +1

Is this a hard case to crack?
edit: FYI - I'm being serious folks…if i crack it, would i be able to put it back together and claim warranty?

        • +2

          @killabob:

They snap together (no screws), so you have to be VERY careful opening them. I was being careful and still managed to snap the tabs in one of mine.

Seagate are poo… But it's $10 cheaper than MSY ("No have, Nexxxxt!!") & delivered… so I avoid the whole soup nazi experience. Many pay extra for that.

  • +1

These days 2TB is too small for desktop drive and at these prices a 2TB desktop drive isn't much cheaper than a portable 2TB. Yes, I know the speeds and applications are a little different.

    • Look at that. You got me to agree with you for once!

    • +1

$92 to buy bare drive. $79 for this pickup.

      • Yeah but 2tb portable can be had for $99 at the right time.

        • +1

but they dont fit in a nas

        • True. Didn't think of that one..

    • +3

"2TB desktop drive isn't much cheaper than a portable 2TB"

      $79 vs $130+
I wish to visit your planet.

    • My 2003 xbox disagrees with your assertion.

  • Can this be used for the PS4 (internal HDD after cracking it open)?

    • +4

      no

you need a 2.5" laptop drive

    • +4

No, this is a 3.5" hard drive, the PS4 only takes 2.5" hard drives.

  • WTF they just cancelled with no explanation!

    • wow cheap hdds get no luck from anyone lately!

    • +1

I just received a shipping confirmation.

      • Just ordered again with a different email account and paid via Paypal this time :/

        • Better luck this time

  • Does anyone know the current best deal for a 4TB external Drive (any model). Will be used purely to back up a couple of internal 4TB drives I have in my system on a once every few weeks type of basis.

  • +8

Jumped across the road to OfficeWorks and got one on a 'price beat'.

Their normal price for this baby is $94 but I got it for $75.05 after the price beat. 'Paywaved' with my ING Direct card for an extra 5% in savings and scored an extra $3.75 discount bringing the total price to $71.30, making an excellent deal to an outstanding deal. All for less than 10 minutes of my time.

This is how the Spending Hacker shops. I suggest you do the same. ;)

  • Can I use this drive to back up my PC?

    • +2

Any reason why you can't? :S lol

      • Just checking as I'm not sure a specific HD is required for back ups.

        • +1

          It'll work fine. :)

        • The important thing with backups is software/methods, not really hardware.

You should find some good forums (Whirlpool, Overclockers etc), and ask-around about making REAL backups. Ones that are actually there when you need them. Copy/Paste to an external is only a small step.

Disaster-recovery is a full-time profession, for good reason.

For what it's worth… I have three of these at home (one is a 3TB, the other are this one - 2TB). One of the 2TB drives just up and died one day (clicking, and refusing to spin up), and it's currently in Singapore being replaced under warranty. The other two drives are still fine. I have a mate with four of the same model (2TB), and he's had 1 of his 4 have the exact same problem.

I guess what I'm saying is, they're perfectly capable, but for god's sake don't let them be your only copy.
