Quad Core 7" Pendopad, 1GB RAM, 8GB, Android 4.4 Kitkat, $59 LIMITED STOCKS Selected Stores @Coles

520

Yet another Coles tablet clearing. Half price at least, worth noting is the 1gb of RAM and quad core processor, the box tells me it's 1ghz but it's reading as a 1.2.

Details at Pendopads a website.
http://shop.pendo.com.au/index.php/products/tablets-1/pendop…

Phones specs gives this,
Just downloaded the "Phone Specs" app to poll the hardware. No idea how accurate this all is. Points of interest it comes back with are:

Manufacturer:INet
Board: exdroid
Hardware: Sun6i
Android Version: 4.4.2
Kernel Version: 3.3.0
Screen Resolution: 1024x552
Screen Density: 160 dpi

Clock Speed: 1.2 GHz
Cores: Quad Core (4)
Architecture: N/A
Revision: N/A

RAM: 1GB
Internal Storage: 4.38GB
Internal Free: 4.11GB

Back Camera: 1.88 Mega Pixels (1200x1600)
Front Camera: 0.3 Mega Pixels (480x640)

BatteryTechnology: LiFe

The above looks fine, screen size is a little less than the touted 1024x600 and is probably it's biggest drawback. No GPS or Bluetooth. You can use 3G via a dongle.

  • Isn't $39 last deal?

    • +2

Think that was a lower specced one could be wrong,

    • -1

this is the true cost of an iPad

  • -8

    lol 1,024 x 600

    • +6

Hey, thats pretty good, its the same resolution as my Galaxy Tab that I got from

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/42587

    • +3

Yeh, it's not so bad. It's only a 7 inch screen after all :)

    • +7

Same as ipad 2 which is 10 inch.

      • Ipad 2 is slightly higher res. 1024 x 768. 28% more pixels.

        • +1

No, ipad 2 is a 10'. This is 7. Ipad 2 ppi is horrible

  • -2

What a bargain!! Even supports latest version of android. I'd be disappointed if I bought this and it didn't get android L. And to think, you'd be lucky to find a desktop cpu with quad cores for this price. :)

    • +2

Pendopad probably won't do any updates on their tablets. You will need to root and flash if available.

      • +1

It'll be hard to find third-party developer support for an unpopular device like this. Good luck.

        • +1

For the money I dressy you could live with that

    • +2

And to think, you'd be lucky to find a desktop cpu with quad cores for this price. :)

While it's certainly a nice price for this tablet, don't confuse "quad-core" for anything actually fast. They're Cortex-A7s, which are decent for a cheap tablet, but even a Haswell i3 would likely be at least an order of magnitude more powerful in terms of work done. A desktop Haswell i7 would absolutely smoke it.

      • And to think, you'd be lucky to find a desktop cpu with quad cores for this price. :)

don't confuse "quad-core" for anything actually fast.
This statement is so true. It's just a marketing gimmick.

even a Haswell i3 would likely be at least an order of magnitude more powerful
I'd say a Celeron would be better. An Atom would be the equivalent or even higher.

      • More like even a 2 year old Celeron and AMD's would outperform this. You can't really compare a laptop running Windows with a tablet running Android. Two different designs and purposes.

  • cpu is A31s Allwinner

  • +1

Do all Coles have these ?

    • +1

Next to none, suggest you call around and you'd be surprised on how many stores don't know what your talking about

      • +11

why was he downvoted? i called few Coles stores during the last tablet clearance sale from Coles, and none of the telephone attendant had any clue about the clearance or the tablet!

        • Get up, go to Coles, talk to the person on the customer service desk where they sell the things. Every Coles I've been into has been well aware of selling them.

Getting some random on the phone isn't the best way of sussing things out.

        • +3

@mackaxx: Not here (Indooroopilly, Kenmore, Mt Ommaney etc). I went in several times and each time had to explain to them what it was and the price I was expecting.

        • +2

Not everyone has a store five minutes up the road. Personally I have one ten minutes drive, and the next closest Coles/Bilo is half an hour ( 45 Klm. ) drive.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: fair enough, Should know better given I'm from a small town originally myself. I've a couple locally and don't tend to venture any further anyway.

        • @mackaxx: Just ask for the front desk or customer service desk when you ring them silly …

        • I went to my local Coles and asked at the counter for the last tablet clearance,
they said they didn't have any tablets at all.

  • +1

viewing angle and resolution is real killer here

    • +11

like you'll be watching it sideways all the time?

      • +1

Have to say viewing angle is tighter than the super amoled I was used to. Nice enough though

  • +2

The question we all care about:

Is this a better or worse tablet than the recent Coles deals?

    • Many people could not get those. This is cheapish build ( nice and small and light ), but should be a zippy performer with 12 months local/handy warranty. Don't expect a Nexus 7 or similar, and you should get good bang for your buck. Those Asus Memo 7 HD's for $100 were the best 7" bargain in my book. I say that because I have had one for a good 10 months ( paid $180 ) and still really like it, even comparing with a Nexus 7 2012.

    • +1

I'm honestly not sure about the processor and performance, but in terms of screen quality. This has better resolution than the DGTEC DSE, and almost the same resolution as the Huawei Pad Media 7 Lite.

Although the advantage of this tablet at least is that it comes with one of the more recent versions of Android (4.4 KitKat) so that should be (somewhat) reflective of its overall performance.

Also it seems like there is no GPS and Bluetooth (according to description at least) which the $29 Huawei did have.

  • +4

Its a $59 tab, my expectations would be low. :)

    • +5

Much better than my galaxy tab 7.7, nice and quick so far. Whirlpool has a pendopad 7" thread but it's a little confusing as it encompasses the old and the new ones. I searched for the model number in it and read the comments following,

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2193625

  • +1

What's the detail to look for to ensure what I buy has these specs and isn't a previous version ?

    • +4

      The model number…

      PNDPP44Q7GPBLK

  • How come it's $149 on the site?

    • That's from the actual Pendopad web site which is their RRP price. Pendopad is not Coles.

And i would say this deal price may be in store only and only from Coles.

      • Coles website had it listed higher too, seems to be just in store

      • +3

Looks like the Coles site to me.

    • It would be nice to see some evidence for this deal's existence.

      • You'll just have to trust me until I can be assed uploading a receipt. Down thread someone found 4 so I don't think I'll bother.

      • I have a pic on my phone from Thursday night, but they only had the display left so I didn't post it.

    • +13

      this is $59………………………

        • +18

Yeah, because you won't get a new ipad for 10 years, amirite?

        • +2

@ryang: Of course it's not like Apple's business model is to get consumers to buy a new device they don't need after a year or anything :P :D

Sorry I usually try and stay out of Apple vs. <whatever> discussions but the landfill line … BAHAHAHA. It's only the company that's done more for planned obsolescence in the past 10 years than anyone else and he reckons they ain't goin in the landfill. :p

    • +3

These things are all pretty disposable after a few years so a
10 year lifespan doesn't get me that excited. My expectations are quite good really given I'll
      Upgrade in a few years.

What's with people here wanting verve for the price of Spumante all the time and passing that off as wisdom.

        • +2

          I said Spumante price….

    • +10

      Poor excuse for a neg.

  • +8

I have one of these and it's quite good for the price. I bought it last time coles had it on sale. The screen is much more responsive than the cheaper ones and it's also fairly fast. Another good thing about this deal is that if something does go wrong, you can deal with coles - not an overseas company.

    • +5

Yeah, I dealt with Coles a while back over an LCD telly I returned for a replacement and they were great. Even posted out a letter after the fact to make sure I was happy.

    • +1

I just bought 1 at casula Coles still got heaps of stocks cheers!

  • +3

No mention of micro sd card slot? Is 8gb enough?
Edit: there is according to the pendo website.

    • +2

Also includes a USB host cable, so you can use thumb drive or hard drive.

Great tablet, not like previous Pendos. Only caveat is the limited battery life. But with the A31 chip, it is still better than many.

    • +1

      Takes 64gb micro sd

      • Probably compatible with 128GB sdxc cards as well if the past is any guide (not that I imagine people will buying this will spend twice as much on additional storage).

        • Give it six months, and 128GB cards should be had for under $80 I hoop, close to the price of this tab.

  • Anyone able to buy it yet? Please upload a receipt if you did

  • +3

Had to return my one. Battery life is so Shit I can't even use it. I would of kept it if it had a battery that lasted longer than 30mins of use.

    • +1

You must have a faulty battery, my 10.1 which I purchased last week lasted 4.5 hrs playing video games. You have to charge it overnight prior to first use.

    • +1

Had to return mine also. After 3 months of sporadic use, battery lasted just over an hour browsing web pages, less watching a video. Pendo support asked me to ship it back to their hardware department with the promise of a replacement, though haven't seen it yet…

Apart from battery issues I found the device to be very responsive and useful however it's let down by an easily scratched, grainy, plastic screen with limited viewing angles.

  • OP what's been your experience with the battery life so far?

    • +2

Seems fine but I haven't the time this weekend to give you a proper value. Read the above whirlpool threads latter part and you'll see some of them have had battery issues.

      • +3

Plus I'd give it a solid overnight charge before casting aspersions.

  • +1

I bought the pendo 10.1" tablets for $49 each for the family + mates.

We've had a ton of drama getting them rooted, i've only found one method that roots them and it only seems to do it until its rebooted (then reinstalls 1market which SUCKS) so hopefully ill get around that, but even unrooted i've found it fantastic.

The 10.1 is only dual core 1.2ghz but its got usb host port which im reading a 128gb flash drive through full of 720p movies and tv shows its playing no drama and looking ok on the screen, usb micro port it can charge through (can actually dual charge off that and the 5v adapter) and takes sd cards, have a 32gb one full of emulation roms.

So i pretty much have this thing running as a portable entertainment device having snes, 64, psx and psp games playing on it using an xbox controllor its amazing.

These are also powerful enough to run GTA vice city flawlessly and they are also running Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi knight academy great.

A lot of people are bashing them but for $49 for the 10.1 and $59 for the 7 which should also be able to do all this, its freaking hard to beat what this thing can do for the price point.

Now to see if I can root this thing permanently and get rid of the damn 1 market…

    • You sure it's the same one? Someone above mentioned this is the PNDPP44Q7GPBLK. I believe the ones with "GP" are Google Play rather than 1market.

  • +1

One thing I've noticed is that the manual states it ships with a plastic screen protector over the glass screen. Mines either stuck down really hard or not there. Any other buyers noticed it's absence or presence?

    • There does not seem to be a screen protector on mine either which is a pity because I was hoping that removing it would improve the appearance of the screen.

      • +1

It has a screen protector it is just difficult to take off (peel it back from the corner using your fingernail) once removed the screen is much more responsive and screen looks better.

        • +1

None on mine and definitely not a glass screen. A persistent attempt to remove the non existent screen protector resulted in bending the screen in the corner. No damage done but clearly not glass , there's your issue re clarity .

Interesting, manual states it is a glass screen

        • +1

Weird, I can kind of get a feel for some plastic stuck down but I cannot for the life of me get it off!

        • +1

Sorry, both my 10.1s had screen protectors as was stated in the manual the 7" must be different.

        • +1

          @smoke87:
The plastic you can feel is the screen,

  • Anyone in sydney got it?

  • +1

I bought one last week from one store for $39, but it didnt turn on, so i swapped it at a different store where is was $59.

    • ? So diff stores diff prices?

      • Different model and/or barcode?

  • +1

    None left in broadmeadows vic

  • +1

Would these things run Skype ok?

    • If you have a good internet connection @ both ends, can't see why not. The other party will get a basic view of your end due to the low end camera. But you get this problem on most low end phones/tablets/laptops with cameras under 2MP +-.

  • +2

at least 4 of these at vaucluse coles fyi.

  • +1

I went to Coles in Rockhampton to see if they had the one from the previous deal but there only had one of these with a $159 price tag on it. I asked if that was the current price and we said that it was. I asked if we could scan it for me. She seemed annoyed and said she would but the price would be $159. She scanned it and it came up as $59. She said something about that she was expecting the price to come down.

Anyway, being used to an iPad and Samsung phone the screen is terrible. Crappy colors, resolution and viewing angles.

I also found no plastic protection on the screen unless it is really difficult to see.

    • +1

see my post above you have to remove the screen protector

  • Typing on it seems to be average as well, as evident in my previous post.

    • +1

see my post above you have to remove the screen protector

  • +3

Coles Gungahlin has 8 left, three however had their external packaging removed.

Very happy with it. I won an iPad 2 recently and ditched it as I hate the OS and the responsiveness was poor.

By comparison, this device is much more responsive to touch input and the screens don't seem to lag as they change. As a quick test I fired up Commsec, which is the site I'll be using primarily. The device loads it very quickly.

Only con I can think of is that touch input seems off by perhaps 1mm or 2mm.

  • I've purchased one from Wattle Grove coles. They still have stock.

  • On typing, I have to disagree. 7 inches is the perfect size for thumb-based typing, which is about as fast for versus my mobile (ATIV S). Responsiveness is perfect, there doesn't seem to be any failure to pick up my touch typing unlike the ipad 2.

  • +1

Agree with regard to the typing. I've got and iPad Air, phone 5s and an ipad 2. Better for typing than the ipad 2 but not quite on par with the iPad Air , you can really fly typing on that one.

With regard to the screen, yep, not as good as those, maybe similar to the ipad 2, what do you expect though .

    • +1

I'm surprised its better than the iPad 2. Shows how far these cheap android tabs have come. My iPad air sucks in comparison to my nvidia shield tab and HTC One M8 when it comes to typing. Its really unfair to compare $300 android tabs against $500 apple tabs. :)

      • Didn't say better, just similar. Side angle view was better with the iPad 2.

That sure is handy for when I want to look at it from a weirdagle……..

        • +1

Are you using swype typing or just tapping? The reason I prefer android because of swype typing, but ios 8 is supposedly getting swype too. So I might actually prefer the iPad then. :)

        • @Ronnnie:
          Bit of both

  • +1

1 more at green valley plaza, confirmed google play version, leaps and bounds over the dse dgtec. Still at shops testing so dont know about battery life but performance is pretty good, smooth without any lag when switching back and forth home screen.

Screen ripples as if the electronic at the back is pushing up against it, view angle when viewed in portrait mode is terrible, landscape is fine.

  • My front facing camera doesn't appear to work, don't think I can be bothered chasing up another but might send pendo an email. From what I could tell it was pretty rubbish anyway and I've better devices to Skype with.

Might even open it up for a look, bet it's not plugged in.

Also not a lot of options in the os for screen colour and power settings, wondering if there are any third party apps that can fiddle with it. Don't think this dials the processor back during idle, either on or off from what I've read. Any of these would probably need root access anyway.

  • Hope someone makes a tablet with huge battery, no cameras, 1080p IPS screen, decent front facing speakers, bare stock Android or Cynogen and replaceable back panel at around $70 dollar mark.

    • Probably when 4k screens are the norm. :)
