wait what? picasa is "real software" too. the picasa web albums are cloud based, but picasa is standalone software for mac and PC

Wouldn't trust any SaaS for various reasons. Not just the privacy like the celeb Apple iCloud hack leaks. Internet isn't 100% uptime.
As for 'real software' for pic viewer Picasa can't do metadata, so it's useless to George Brandis and that guy knows his pics. And image formats. Picasa: 8. ACDSee: 61. 'Nuf said.
i still am unsure what you are talking about. picasa can be used entirely offline and by default - unless you stick in your google credentials, stays entirely offline.
it scans your photo library and keeps it catalogued. SaaS implies that the main service is online and the app is a front end. and from what i can see, you can tag and search images based on metadata.

It's now about 4:30pm in LA (PDT), so it may be worth checking back in a couple of hours. The offer was supposed to last 48 hours.
I use to use ACDSee for about 10 years years before going to Lightroom (and their Mac version was seriously lacking back then when I switched).
Reason they are giving this away is Pro 7 is out, so they'll bug you at least weekly with upgrade deals, at least those deals are like $50-$70 upgrades compared to normal price.
