[VIC Only] Penfolds St Henri 2009 $49.95, RRP$95 at DM's

280

St Henri is an 'Icon and Luxury' wine at Penfolds. 2009 is a good vintage in Barossa, and St Henri is well made.

For a St Henri, this is the best price in recent years.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 St Henri Shiraz is slated for release on May 1, 2013. It is a little closed at the moment though reveals earthy aromas of warm berries, some mulberries and Chinese dried plums over notes of meat, black olive, coffee and tree bark. Richly concentrated and complex with layered, savory flavors, it is structured by firm, grainy tannins and is finishing long. It needs time to develop further. Drink from 2015 to 2025+.

2009 is an impressive St Henri, more a sleeper than a blockbuster, with a very long future before it. Impressively focused crunchy red berries, plums, blueberries and liquorice define a palate with an undercurrent of gentle dark chocolate. The finish rises to a black fruit and liquorice crescendo, with the savoury tannin definition that defines 2009 carrying its fruit with exceptional persistence and a calm yet confident refinement.

    Website shows it as $84.95.

    Wrong!

    • $49.95 in Vic

    • +1

that price is for a pack of 6. so you have to spend $300 to get it at that price.
Op please change the title is misleading.

      • Not working for NSW.

        Rough, wanted a few bottles.

      • You can buy five bottles of two buck chuck to make up the six…

  • +1

    $80 in Brisbane :(

$49.95 in any 6 bottles…. so if you don't plan on getting six of them, can always get (for example) 5 bottles of Dan's own cab merlot (https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_908425/cleanskins-w…) for $2.85 a bottle (or maybe spend a little more on https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_908423/gossips-cabe…) to make up the six…. ;-)

  • Working in VIC but not in NSW

    • +1

Must be price matching someone in Vic….

  • Shows no stock in NSW

  • Can't seem to find away around it.
Tried setting home store as VIC then shipping to NSW, but no go.

Awesome! My Vintec fridge is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow from Penfold's previous deal (in which I bought cheap plonk). I will have something good to cellar in it now, at least once I've trotted down to Uncle Dan's on Bridge Rd…

  • +1

Not as good a year as 2010 apparently which sold out within a week of release this year at ~$70 a bottle and came back at $80+.

    • +2

      True, but you won't find the 2010 at $50 a bottle anywhere I'm guessing…

    • This, except it isn't sold out - that was just TWE's drip marketing strategy to attempt to impose an artificial inflation on their wine portfolio.

You can buy the 2010 at $80… having tasted both, the '09 isn't bad but even at $80 the 2010 is better VFM, it's a stunning wine… And if you are a points hound, 2010 scored 97-100 with various tasters, better points than the '09 Grange in some cases.

      • The 2010 at $80 is fine buying indeed, and would absolutely kill the 2009 at that price, but I think that a St Henri at $50 needs to be compared with stablemates and competitors at ~$50 (the 2010 is 60% more than the 2009) such as the cellar release 2009 Bin 128 on Uncle Dan's site.

At any rate, I won't be touching mine (other than a possible sacrificial bottle) for another 3 years or more…

        • No doubt not as good as 2010, but it is still great wine. You are comparing Diamonds to Rubies. AT $50 it is a steal and you could flip them and sell them now for $70. Just ordered 2 dozen, and will be keeping mine in the cellar.

  • almost every store near my area has sold out…

Still stock in Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca, Geelong, Berwick, Coburg, Essendon Fields, Ringwood, Malvern, South Melbourne, Prahran and Preston…

Anyone for a quick lazy dozen, or two six packs :-). I used to get this for under $30 a bottle not that many years ago, showing my age there. I used to work at the Liquorland in Chapel Street Prahran many moons ago, and part of my job was to go in to the Original Dan Murphy ( well before Woolies bought them all ) and be like a spy to check prices, in order to price match them in our store ( company policy ). That was good training to become an Ozbargainer.

    • Ahh the original Dan Murphy. First bottle-o that was so cheap and so massive it had friggin' shopping trolleys; it was like we'd been plonked down in the middle of Duff Gardens.

      • My dad took me in there when I was a wee young tacker. In hindsight, I think my dad may have been a bad influence…

I have a subscription to James Halliday and this is only a 93 rated wine. By comparison I can buy 97/98 rated wines for under $20. Save your money.

Give us suggestions Robbo :) Shiraz please

      I'm all ears. :)

      • Yes, some suggestions for decent red plonk would be welcome, thanks.

        • I use these and they haven't disappointed me yet with decent wine selections.

The new Wineosphere app is free until end of October. Seems to work very well. (One of the chaps involved was James Halliday's publication editor)

          Wineosphere

For a small annual subscription the Huon Hooke website and app are also excellent value. I've wasted more money on a bad bottle of wine:

          Huon Hooke

Just select your price range (i.e. $15 to $20 etc) in both apps and they'll give their best suggestions for the selected price range.

    • Is that you Tony from Get Wines Direct? :-)

  • Just bought 6 bottles 'Click and Collect' from Essendon Fields. Hopefully the order comes through :)

slated for release on May 1, 2013

but I can't wait that long!

  • Yes, it is a price match. Someone I know just bought at same price somewhere else, 12 bottles limited per day per person.

    • where? NSW or VIC?

  • We are currently doing some planned site maintenance.

As such, we are sorry that Dan Murphy's website is temporarily unavailable.

Please come back shortly or if you'd like to place an order, call us on 1300 72 33 88.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Thats all i get after clicking into the website….

  • …And that's all folks. Back to $80.75 a bottle now. I now have 6 bottles waiting for me at Prahran - someone beat me to Richmond's stocks.
