set up in about a minute and seems to work great

  • Looks pretty good for the price and easy to set up.

  • Reviews are good -

  • Good price, but I wouldn't say great reviews. Some of the reviews on Newegg are terrible.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127…

  • without antennas their performance is severely limited

id pick up a cheap wireless router and put ddwrt on it, will completely outperform

    • +9

      Great theory… setup "slightly" harder!

    • +2

Doubt you'd get it for $19 though, everyone is on the prowl for ddwrt routers.

      • there was 2 deals last year with MSY selling them for next to nothing and both were compatibe to ddwrt, i got 1 of them to set up as wireless repeater bridge and could stream videos through 4 brick walls, abit after tweaking the output power

no deals this year though :/

      • +1

Hey pimko, for just $19 you can get a DLink DIR-632 at Harvey Norman's BIG BUYS stores. I got a catalogue today. Perfect for ddwrt fans. It can even handle some USB wireless dongles.

    • +3

incase anyone wondering what ddwrt is. check lifehacker and howtogeek for more info.

    • +1

Yeah but its fiddly to get working, and as reliable as chinese car :)

  • This thing work well, performance is fine. However mine keeps taking over DHCP from my main router, waiting for a firmware fix.

    • Same here, but works well for a moderate boost. Just don't expect a big boost. Easy set up, but mine also connects before main router, although closer to main router. Easy to switch between connections though.

    • Does this cause it to "timeout"? Because that's what happens to mine. I constantly need to power cycle it which is annoying.

      • Yeah, I noticed my PS3 timing out trying to access internet and couldn't figure out what it was. In the end I noticed the IP given to the PS3 was from the extender, not router which is confusing since the PS3 is directly connected to the router by cable not wifi!

Power cycling the extender fixes it, but after a few hours goes back to hijacking DHCP!

        • -1

Extender never assign IP because it is not a router.

        • @superforever:
Okay so how do I fix it?

        • -1

          @onebutters:

You said the PS3 directly connected by cable, right? Can you disable WIFI on the PS3?

    officeworks pricematch anyone?

just researching this product …. out of stock

  • Can this increase internet speed?

    • If you are getting a weak signal ( say in a bedroom a fair distance from your main router ), and you have one of these between your signal and your device, it should increase signal strength and speed.

I read somewhere that you can only increase the speed of signal up to half of the wifi extender at maximum ( not sure on this ). If you have a wireless N150 router, and use this or another N300 extender, you will get max speed of N75 ( I think ). So to get up maximum speed of N300, you will need to use this with a router of N600+ ( as single band ). If anyone has more knowledge on this, that might help others.

Edit: Should have read comments below, someone could shed more light on it maybe.

Yes, you are correct. An extender essentially acts as a client which receives data requested by any other device on network & boost/strengthens the signal before 'relaying/retransmitting it. I believe it only has 1 antenna for both Tx/Rx, hence throughput reduced to half.

In being an 'extender' they mean widening the reach of connectivity. Does not increase speed of internet.

As others have mentioned, a cheap router + DD-WRT is a much better option, but get this if you need plug & play simplicity (for tech-phobic ppl).

edit: Smeg's answer below is worded better, but same point overall.

Look I'm not going to neg it because I haven't actually tried it, but I wouldn't expect it to be very good. Keep your receipt for a return in this case.

My reasons why I am dubious about this product:

    1. Wireless in general is not that reliable at long distances or solid construction, so if you are at the point of needing a repeater, you are likely to be dealing with this hurdles and the placement can be very hard. Even leaving doors open/shut can make a difference.

    2. Wireless Repeaters in general are pretty flaky due to usually only having 1 radio in them, it halves the throughput as it constantly switches between Sending/Receiving the signals.

    3. Small internal antenna.

    4. D-Link has the worst reputation for Wireless products

If using a CAT5e/CAT6 ethernet cable is not possible or too expensive to install, I suggest having a look at HomePlug products first before resorting to Wireless Extenders. HomePlugs are not as reliable as ethernet cables but are not far behind (occasionally they don't work at all, depending on your specific electrical wiring), but they are much more reliable than Wireless Extenders/Repeaters, that's for sure.

    Thanks lots to the OP.

OW did a price match, and the guy at the checkout said that he was going to buy one himself.
    OW dropped from $59!

Just installed, and it works an absolute treat.
Signal strength at the other end of the house from the router rose from almost nothing to full scale.

    Love it :-)

    • +1

No problem. Thanks for letting me know. I have updated the deal.

    • Bought it 5 mins ago from OW, checkout said the same :) .. he is going to buy one …

    • Of course it's going to say that the signal strength is full. Your new AP point is right next to you instead of at the other end of the house.

The signal strength of the AP point to the router is a different story. So if you don't have any connection on your phone/tablet/wifi device, and it still says full signal - it can be the result of low signal received by extender AP point from the router.

      • +2

Download speeds on our tablets and mobiles was rubbish before I put in the range extender, and now it's fantastic.

Not a lot else to say…..

Got 2 at officeworks price match $19x2 + $5.95 delivery as no stock in stores

    No ethernet port!

Just pricematched at Officeworks @ Brisbane CBD.
    They have 2 left.

    Webpage still advertises at $19.
    So you can still pricematch.

    • out of stock = no price match @ officeworks

      • +3

The website doesnt say that unless you click add to cart or find in store, and most officeworks wont bother.

        • Thanks! 2nd time lucky at OW…had to pay shipping tho

  • +1

I just picked up one from Harvey Norman- Coffs harbour :D

  • That's cheap, but these are pretty crap.
Mine crashes at least daily and has to be power cycled.
And the orientation makes a massive difference to the signal quality so try turning it upside down, on its side e.t.c!

  • +2

I wonder if a firmware update would fix the crashing issue?

  • Great deal OP!

Just managed to clear out my local OW! After a 30 minute debate over the price match managed to get them for $18.05 per unit.

The blokes at OW were not happy taking a loss!

    • +2

Your loss really. They are pretty average, and what are you going to do with them all?

  • Awesome deal. Saved me stuffing around with a wrt. 10 left at HN City Cross (SA)

  • Office works is the best. Got one for $18.05

  • Horrible reviews:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127…

Sounds like if you actually need an extender then you just bought a paperweight if you did.

    • If you don't like the product you could probably sell it for $40-$50. That's what they are worth at other retailers.

      • Broden?

In all seriousness though, people that need an extender should steer clear of this.

        • At this price it's worth a shot, like 15 minutes worth of work for a lot of people.

        • @Davo93:

If it's so good then why didn't you give the deal a +1?

I would say that $20 is not worth a shot considering you can flash DD-WRT or other open sourced firmwares on many routers around that price range or for a little more with proper antennas, ethernet, and possibly USB sharing that will greatly surpass the functionality of this product.

Look into range extenders and you might change your tune, rather than just looking at the RRP and then the discount.

        • +3

          @c0balt:

Don't take it too personally, or should I say look at it mainly from your own point of view. Modems and especially wireless routers can be tricky to set up and get running correctly. Setting up DD-WRT is even more tricky and some people are happy to forgo some performance and features for an easy set up and quicker convenience.

To buy one or even two units and because they are not suitable for use is certainly not being a "Broden," I think most OZBargainers would agree.

Spent way too much these past 2 days on ebay. Finally got this when its back in stock. Keep telling myself it's only $19… oh well.

  • did anyone notice that the image shows an US plug…

    • I noticed.. x_x

  • I am having issue configuring it. The light keep on blinking and mobile ap is not connecting with this device on wireless network. I have already entered the correct password.

    Can someone please assist?

Factory reset and forget wifi network on mobile?

      • Sorry I am not much tech savy. Is factory reset pin needs to pressed while this device is powered?

        • Yep

  • I really needed one of these, thanks for the heads up, got it from CBD officeworks.

  • I got it for $18.05 at OW East Perth (WA)

  • Picked one up without hassles at OW Underwood. There were about 5 left on the self as of 5PM.

    Cheers.

  • I've had 2 of these and they're TERRIBLE. You'd get good connection at first then you'd lose it after a few hours. To fix it you'd have to reset it. Now it's freaking hard to get a connection, mine keeps saying "configuring IP" until a handful of tries it'd then connect. The biggest head fk extender ever. My friend also has one and they've got the same problem too.

    • Dont use WPS period, use manual config and it runs like a champ.

      • I've been using the gateway site with the wizard for setting up. Along with the mobile app. However I'd still get the connection problems. I can connect to the extender fine but no internet goes through.

  • I've always found with these things, when I get to the point where my router wifi is there, and this still has signal, it doesn't move to the router wifi. Anyone else have this problem?

  • +3

went to Officeworks in Melbourne CBD near Collins st. this morning and the sales guy was so angry that he came up with literally 4 lame excuses in under 3 minutes for price match will never get honoured and quickly went away from further discussion.. just another episode of life as ozbargainers :)

    • +8

      Angry salesman?
You should report the bastard. Price matching is supposed to garner goodwill like advertising, not give customers an uncomfortable experience. They advertise it everywhere!
Dont take it. Report the bastard. Put him in.

      • please advise how to report this? thx heaps

        • -1

Write an email to head office describing your exact experience. Tell them the time and the store. If you did not get the salesman's name, describe him. Tell them how you felt. IE humiliated for asking, uncomfortable due to anger etc.Ask them if that is the expected customer experience with price matching?
Oh and the clincher, which should make them notice…tell them you posted the experience on Ozbargain.
You might just help the next person.

  • Got mine from OW Subiaco (WA) last night without any drama. Thanks OP!

  • can anyone confirm if this is AU plug or US plug? Thanks

      AU plug

Harvey Norman used photo of US model that's all.

Just saw a few at Belrose opened before. I have no use for anyone interest.

  • I just picked up the second last one in Townsville at 10am

Price matched at Officeworks Mandurah (WA) and they had plenty of stock there this morning. $18.05 is a bargain and now I'm getting 10Mbps+ in my bedroom where I previously struggled to get wifi signal. Love your work OP!

  • anyone successfully pricematched OW in ACT?

  • Thanks OP. I think I just bought the last one in HN online. There is no "add to cart" button in the HN page now. Several minutes ago, I failed to price match in both OW (due to no stock in store) and JBHiFi (found one but store manager refused to match).

  • +1

As might be expected, these appear to be a clearance of old stock with HW Version A1.
I ordered mine online to be picked up from HN Bridge Rd Richmond VIC and they handed me a version A1. I asked if I could swap for the latest A2 and they pointed me to the stock on the shelf. They had about 30 units in stock. Went through them and most were A1, but managed to find a couple of A2 units and swapped mine over. Interestingly, most of the boxes had stickers on them stating "Not for resale". They must have been part of a previous give away with other hardware.

I dropped by OW in Richmond and their 3 units on the shelf were all version A2. No wonder they aren't happy selling at this price. Wonder how much HN paid for the container load of old stock.

Anyway, thought this might be helpful.

    • Didn't even know anything about revisions. Just checked bottom label of my boxes for 2 units from Officeworks and both say HW Ver: A2. Must have just been lucky haha. What's the difference?

      • Not really sure what the difference is, but I assume some hardware improvements. This occurs with a lot of tech hardware, and not everyone may be aware to look.
I only knew to check this because the Dlink Support site shows the two verions. Even two different manuals.
        http://support.dlink.com.au/download/download.aspx?product=D…

        • Interesting, my HN one is H/W Ver: A2

      • Can't notice any difference in tech specs from the manual

  • Picked up two & price matched at OW Chadstone (Vic), nice deal OP!

  • Picked one up from OW thanks OP

  • Price-matched and got additional 5% off at Officeworks Alexandria. $18.05 total - niiice!

  • Horrible experience at OW today basically they got the manager and looked at every excuse possible, saying why is there two prices on they're site. What's a hot deal, and after going into it saw it said limited time only.. And the manager is like nah I don't want to lose my job coz I'm gonna have to answer to my boss why I dropped from 59 to 19
