ACT Residents - Origin Energy Electricity & Gas Deal

100

Similar (perhaps less generous) to previous offers in other states. Not sure when the offer expires but $50 gas credit supposedly ends 31 Oct (I'm confident you could get it after that if you ask directly).

More info: Ph 1300 674 446, enter promo code 210 (will get you directly to a human being!).

I've checked prices of both Origin and ACTEWAGL and surprise, surprise they are identical (for me). We currently get no discount with ACTEWAGL and we don't have services to bundle so it's probably a no-brainer (will do some more research before signing on).

OFFER
Switch your electricity and gas to Origin Energy and get:
- 14% off Origin's electricity usage charges when you pay your bills in full and on time for 12 months.
- Take another 1% off Origin's electricity usage charges when you pay by direct debit. (Fees apply for CC payments - check details)
- 8% off Origin's natural gas usage charges when you pay your bills in full and on time for 12 months.
- Take another 1% off Origin's natural gas usage charges when you pay by direct debit.
- Bonus $50 credit available until 31 October towards your natural gas charges (after 3 months) when you switch your electricity and natural gas to Origin. (Spoke to Origin and credit remains even if no gas used in that period).
- Automatic registration for My Account, which gives you access to your account online and your bills via email.
- No exit fees on any of our at home energy plans.
- A choice of green energy options like 25% GreenPower from as little as $1 extra per week.

Terms and conditions
-These offers aren’t available everywhere.
-Discounts don't apply to any other charges such as GreenPower, Green Gas or supply charges, and the pay on time discount isn’t available to Power On customers who aren’t using direct debit.
-Refer to the direct debit terms for more details of the direct debit discount.
-A $50 (incl. GST) credit towards your natural gas charges will be applied to your bill after 3 months of energy supply, if you switch both your natural gas and electricity to Origin by 31 October 2014.
-Choose this energy plan and you will be automatically registered for My Account, if not already registered. Refer to the My Account terms of use.
-Under this energy plan, we will send your bills via email ('Online Billing') at least for the duration of the energy plan. Online Billing will automatically continue after the energy plan period unless you disable it.

  • Are there any sign-up/setup fees when you are switching from ActewAGL to Origin?

    • ACTEWAGL suggests there may be exit fees if you currently bundle with them. No OE setup fees mentioned in T&Cs so they'd be breaking the law to impose them.

More details from the link I posted:

What happens after I sign up?
Once you've signed up online, we’ll send you a confirmation email with all the important information about your agreement and energy plan. If you signed up over the phone, we’ll post or email you all the info you need.

It's easy from here. We let your current retailer know you're switching to Origin. Your switch to us normally takes place at your next scheduled meter read. Electricity and natural gas meter reads occur on a 3 month cycle with the exception of Victorian natural gas customers where this cycle is 2 months.

Once you have transferred to us we’ll send you an email or letter confirming your switch. The discount that you selected as part of this offer will start on the day you officially transfer to us.
And don't worry – none of this will interrupt your power supply.

If I make one payment late, do I lose the pay on time usage discount forever?
No, you'll only lose the discount for the bill(s) you don’t pay on time or in full.

When will I receive my first bill?

You'll generally receive your first Origin bill 3 months after you transfer and 2 months if you are a Victoria gas customer. The bill includes your discount and any credits or concessions youre eligible for. Just remember to pay your bill on time so you're eligible for the discount.

The discount will last for 12 months from the date you transferred to Origin. Once the year is up, we’ll get in touch to let you know about our range of offers.

  • I receive 11% discount with ACTEWAGL on a 24 months electricity only plan (not really binding), you just have to ask for it to the rep. And do a quick search for Origin Energy in OZB forum, plenty of bad experiences with them.

  • Please read full terms and conditions before signing a contract with origin.

    • Please elaborate.

  • Reply to bargainaus: Interesting. Last time I asked they said straight out no discounts. I'll give it another try.

    • Needs to be 24 months contract. I did my research and ACTEWAGL is best for ACT region, they won't charge you if you move and the new place do not have ACTEWAGL connection.

More info after seeing an ACTEWAGL "price match promise" ad.

ActewAGL Price Promise terms and conditions
    Effective: 16 October 2014
These terms and conditions set out the eligibility criteria for our Price Promise. You only qualify for our Price Promise if you meet these terms and conditions.
    Eligibility terms
    1. Our Price Promise is to match or beat a competitor’s current market retail contract offer (“offer” means the overall price offered, that is, the tariff rate as adjusted by any discount or rebate) for electricity or electricity and gas at a premises in the ACT, where the offer:
    • is generally available in the ACT and currently published on the Australian Energy Regulator’s website – energymadeeasy.gov.au; and
    • has a plan/s that is the same as one of our published electricity and natural gas plans as per our current ACT schedules of charges, available at actewagl.com.au/prices, apart from the discount or rebate offered.
    2. “Match or beat” means that we will at least match the qualifying competitor’s offer under our Price Promise and will make an offer that is the same as, or cheaper than the competitor’s offer.
    3. We make no guarantee that your total bill will be less than anyone else’s, as that depends on your electricity and/or natural gas consumption, your electricity plan or electricity and natural gas plans, and the offer you accepted.
    4. To apply for our Price Promise you must call us on 13 12 93.
    5. Our Price Promise terms that are in effect at the time that you first contact us will determine your eligibility.
    6. To be eligible for our Price Promise you must be an ACT residential or small business customer (<100MWh electricity consumption per annum and <1TJ gas consumption per annum) and:
    • have your electricity or electricity and gas account/s with us at your premises in the ACT; or
    • have your electricity or electricity and gas account/s at your current premises in the ACT with another energy retailer and intend to set up an account with us.
    7. We are not required to make more than one Price Promise offer to you.
    8. Any Price Promise offer we make to you is for at least the same term as our competitor’s offer, up to a maximum period of 24 months.
    9. If you are currently on a Market Retail contract with ActewAGL and choose to sign up to a new offer, early cancellation fees may apply.
    10. We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify or discontinue our Price Promise or to restrict its availability to any person, at any time, for any or no reason, and without prior notice or liability to you.
    11. These terms and conditions do not constitute an offer for the supply of electricity or gas. If you wish to take up our Price Promise, we will make you an offer in accordance with relevant energy laws.
When our Price Promise does not apply
    12. Gas only services are not eligible for our Price Promise.
    13. Our Price Promise does not apply to solar products, renewable energy generation schemes, green power, or miscellaneous fees and charges (including any applicable contract termination fees).
    14. If you have an overdue electricity or gas account with us you may not be eligible for our Price Promise.
    15. Our Price Promise does not apply where a competitor’s price is lower because of a discount through a coupon, loyalty reward or other offer or incentive, or if the lower price is not displayed on http://energymadeeasy.gov.au. It does not apply where a competitor offers other free (or discounted) goods or services.
    16. Notwithstanding any other term or condition in these terms and conditions, you will not be eligible for our Price Promise if, in our opinion, you have acted fraudulently or in bad faith.
    ActewAGL’s decision is final
    17. In the event of any dispute as to the interpretation

  • thanks for info. it's time to do some research

  • +1

Rang ACTEWAGL this am and they have offered -15%E and -10%G (off usage charges), 12 month contract. OE is same for electricity and -9%+$50 credit on gas. These figs include a 1% bonus for direct debit.

As I wrote above, the unit consumption charges were EXACTLY the same for both providers in my case so this is a guaranteed saving. YEMV.

    • Thanks! I called them and got the same discounts.

  • I called ACTEW and they offered 10% regardless, and another 5% if pay on time, so total 15%. BUT, there was a $50 fee to change from my current plan which they wouldn't waive. They claim that Origin has a couple hidden charges eg setup, connection/disconnection and they charge a meter read fee (couldn't find this on Origin website or terms to verify ). In any case they send full document and offer in the mail and there is a 10 days cooling off so will hopefully have better handle by then of other charges and which one is better overall.

    • The guy I spoke to didn't mention any $50 fee…
He said however, that the discount is capped at $500 per year.

      • Interesting. Thanks guys. The woman I spoke to didn't mention any cap.

There was no fee when I switched plans 18 months ago but times change. There is no such thing as "hidden fees" afaik, like insurance it has to be all in the detail even if it's just a mention of fees apply or something similar. Best to ask about specifics which might occur nevertheless. Meter read fees for example were already bundled into the price previously, assuming it even happens regularly. Always worth an occasional check to make sure they're not estimating usage beyond reality as happened interstate.

  • Yep I just got 15% off electricity and 10% off gas with one call with actew. No other charges but they did mention the $500 cap. I won't reach the cap. Thanks guys!

  • I also got 15% off Electricity and 10% off Gas with $500 capped discount. No mention of $50 fee.
I also got Origin offer in post yesterday.
