Vietnamese Pork Rolls - $2.80 Roll or $3.50 with Can of Drink @ Cabramatta, NSW

1400

Vietnamese pork rolls starting from $2.80 on it's own or $3.50 with a can of drink.

Thought it should be raised to everyone's attention that there are cheap pork rolls on offer the next time you visit Cabramatta, NSW. It seems to be a bit of a price war between several local bakeries, so it's time to get out there and make the most of it!
Rolls are usually about $3.50 to $4.00 in Cabramatta; $4.50 to $5.50 in places like the CBD without a drink.

I usually go to the "Hot Bread" place on Hughes St and can vouch for the quality there. I've yet to try Vinata and the recently opened Destination Roll.

Destination Roll, Cabramatta Freedom Plaza, $3.50 pork roll with free cold drink ($3 rolls for the next 3 months promotion now in place - refer to comment below)
Hot Bread, Shop 9, 10-12 Hughes St, $2.80 pork roll or $3.50 with cold drink
Vinata’s, Shop 13-14, Cabramatta Plaza, 1 Hughes Street, $3 pork roll

I still think the best rolls are on John Street opposite to subways (the one in the narrow pathway).

    • That's the one opposite the BBQ shop in the pathway right? They're pretty good too.

I think they're far enough away from the above three bakeries that they haven't taken part in the discounting.

    • +1

Yup I reckon it's the best one in Cabra! It's $3.50, the big pieces of pickled veges is what makes the roll…

I tried destination roll, they have a big selection but thought their rolls was meh…

      • +2

Steer clear of Destination Roll. Had two pork rolls there and there was absolutely no taste both myself and gf (especially me) were pissed off for the entire day we wasted our money and tummy space.

        • Yeah being new they have the novelty factor, don't see them lasting long though.

Their $3 promotion was only meant for a month, but I think it's still going…

        • @HAL: It's still going cus they know they can't compete on taste. Had almost every one of them in Cabra. The best (but probably most expensive) is the one watty is talking about in the alley. Vinata'sp if I'm feeling cheap.

    • This is the 24 hour place. When their bread rolls are fresh, the pork rolls are really flavoursome. The pate is very strong just the way we all love it!

      • Don't think he meant Viet Hoa's 24 hour pork rolls?
Unless that alleyway one is 24 hours as well (which I didn't know if so)

        • +1

Viet Hoa is the one opposite subway (kinda opposite) on John Street and I rate it as 2nd best.

Best is Hot Bread near the BBQ shop and next to the grocery store next to the dvd store next to the yum cha restaurant on Hugh Street next to the car park opposite Super Dish and Woolies. Their bread, filling, pickled carrot and sauce is perfect!!!

Their meatball rolls are extremely juicy and their pork rolls are perfectly balanced where your lips are smudged with pate and egg spread, and the paper bag is soggy on the bottom!

The same old lady and woman who wears too much makeup and woman who wears no makeup and the son has been working there for as long as I can remember!

        • @cheapskateasian:

I think Watty is talking about the bread shop in one of those alleyways leading to the car park. It's the one with the seafood shop and BBQ shop in the same strip.

Yes, I usually go to Hot Bread for my pork rolls. Good serving of salad and the pate is very nice.

        • @dannyboi:

sock horror I have no idea!! you mean the one of the corner near pho tau bay???

otherwise I am so excited to discover a new pork roll place!! haha will have to check it out this weekend!

On John street itself I am only aware of two pork roll places. Grandpa's bakery next to the shoe repair and Pho Viet, and Viet Hoa next to Eastland Supermarket.

        • @cheapskateasian:

It's off John Street. Literally in an alleyway opposite to Subway on the other side of the pedestrian crossing. Basically you'd want to head towards the main car park. No idea what the name is.

That one near Pho Tau Bay is/was Viet Hoa's second store to my understanding.

        • @dannyboi:

cheers man! Will check it out on Saturday!!

btw where is your fave pho place? I'm still yet to find one…. used to be Pho 54 but I went there about 3 weeks ago and the broth smelled like Chinese medicine which was really weird… I've been eating there since the 90's and ever since they came back from holidays a fe weeks ago, the broth has changed… :(

        • @cheapskateasian:

Pho Ann in the Subway alley is the one I usually frequent.

        • @cheapskateasian:

its basically the alleyway near the toilets, they make the best bread in cabramatta but are kinda stingy on filling.

        • +3

@cheapskateasian: I had to go brush my teeth after that description or I wouldn't have got to sleep. I could practically taste the roll…

My personal favourite is the one next to the shoe repairs in the paved area on John St, they always have hot meatballs and hot chilli. The Shoe Repair guy is a top bloke too, does a great job and actually affordable. Some other guys charge more than a new pair of shoes.

        • +1

          @dannyboi:

I'm Vietnamese and can that confirm pho ann is the best pho in Sydney

        • +1

          @michaellee117:
Yup Pho Ann, but the real Pho An in Bankstown is better than one in Cabra I think. Also Gia Hoi in Canley Heights is awesome for bun bo hue and has had a 20% off opening special for years.

        • @michaellee117: Totally agree. Prices are good, too. I find it better than the over-priced "Pho An" in Bankstown :)

        • @solar:

We used to go there often 20 years ago when they were at the old place.
I'm not too impressed with their staff and the soup that's been brought out in my recent visits has been luke warm.

Admittedly it's where you'd take your guests if you were going out.

        • +1

@solar: Pho An on a good day is the best! Price aren't though, I always feel like I am in a school cafeteria there…

        • @dannyboi: I always ask for a side bowl of soup (it's free) and is always super duper hot, pour it in and you have piping hot Pho! :)

        • @HAL: yeah, maybe it depends on the visit. We go to both fairly regular and I haven't had a bad experience in Bankstown yet but maybe I've just been lucky. Their satay is really good too.

        • @solar:
          Yes their satay is excellent.
You can buy a jar at the counter but the funny thing is, it's not the same as the one for free in their restaurant.
On the talk of Pho An in Bankstown, their prices are getting too high for pho.

  • I once got a fly in one of these from this store. Eat with caution.

    • +10

      free i hope.

    • +1

      extra protein free of charge??

    • I've been eating them for decades and have never had a problem. You must have been incredibly unlucky or maybe I just go to the right store.

I also usually go to Hot Bread on Hughes.

      • I've had been eating them once a week. Once I saw the fly I went up to the lady who normally makes the pork roll and asked her what she could do for me. She didn't really look surprised and just gave me my money back. Just my 2 cents. Although I'd argue the pork roll here are pretty darn good, hence the lines and the breads nice as well.

    $2.80? OMG!!
Must ask my local bakery for price-match. They're selling for $4.50

    • +4

Surely someone here is expecting to go to Officeworks tomorrow…

    • +1

      husrtville?

    • +1

Reminds me of the price war in the late 90's, down to $1.80. Used to eat 2.

  • -1

That shop has been 2.80 for a very long time 3-4 years +. About 10 years ago this place use to have pork roll for 1.30 i miss those days

    • +1

      inflation happened

    • +10

Sorry but you are wrong and I had to log in to correct you. I live in Cabramatta and eat pork rolls/meatball rolls religiously every weekend.

The standard price is $3.50 which only changed about a month ago. Prior it was $3.30

Since the weekend they have started to sell for $2.80 for pork roll, meatball roll, and bbq pork roll.

  • +6

In Melbourne CBD, $7 a roll. Speaking of cheap eat… meh… I rather pay for a meal at DON DON.

    • +2

$7 is the price for people who wouldn't know a pork roll if the sauce dripped all over their hipster clothing. $5 has to be the upper limit for anyone who's ever had one even in CBDs

      • +1

Where can you get banh mi for $5 in the CBD? I work near N.Lee Bakery, which sells them for $6 (just went up from $5.50). There's is the best I've tasted so far in the CBD. I've been to 4 others in my area of the CBD and they cost more and tasted average compared to N.Lee's.

        • There's plenty in and around Chinatown in Syd

        • +1

@Jackson: We get ripped off here in Melbourne

        • @JLai: That's interesting to hear, I wonder why? It's not like Vic Asians or Asian shops are any different from Syd Asians or shops (in my experience anyway) . Maybe in Vic people are more open minded about mildly "exotic" food? I still know a few (non-asian) people who won't touch a pork roll because they don't recognise the meat.

Out of curiosity how cheap does a lunchtime Asian fresh cooked meal get over there? I can get a sit down Thai stir fry for as low as 9 bucks, making a 7 buck roll impossible to justify.

        • @Jackson: Yeah, it's not just Asians eating in these Asian style eateries… all these damn non-Asian people who have acquired a taste for Asian foods are driving up the cheap Asian food prices!
$9 for a Thai stir fry would probably be about $12 here in Melbourne CBD. $10-$13 is usually my lunch budget. Of course, there are some cheap places that are located near the Uni/Tafe city campuses which caters for students, but that's on the other side of the CBD to where I work.

the suburb of Inala in Brisbane sell the best pork rolls! :)

    • Sorry but you are incorrect. Inala pork rolls lack filling and the bread roll is approximately 3/4 the size of a standard bread roll in Sydney.

I guess you have never had a Cabramatta pork roll before….

      • +2

        come Springvale boyyyyyy

        • +1

Had bahn mis in Cabra and Springvale before I moved to QLD. Inala bakery in the shopping centre has the best rolls in Aust

  • Nice! Closest place to me has it for $5 :(

  • Used to have the ones from Vinata before I moved from Cabra and they were good. Mmmmm…missing my pork rolls.

  • The rest of the country makes hugh price hikes. The Asians keep price low.

  • +1

holy shiet, $3.50 for pork roll + drink

  • +1

I love how the free drink costs extra.

    • +1

Corrected the copy paste. It's free at Destination Rolls but extra at "Hot Bread".

  • That is so cheap it is criminal.

  • +5

In Vietnam they cost $10,000 Dong (around 50 cents Aud) for the standard one… I miss Cabra food though!

    • They are also about half the size in Vietnam… I always have to have 2!

    • Wait! Does that mean… if I move to Vietnam…

      … I'll be a Dongllionaire!?

  • +3

Best Bahn Mi in Melbourne has to be Bun Bun Bakery in Springvale, and at $4 it's a bargain!

  • Need to go to Cabra! Sad it's not chicken rolls though.

    • +1

Best chicken rolls according to white people are at Steve and Rose's store opposite the train station and next to the bakery.

Their bread rolls look as though they are on steroids! size of a football almost!

      • Why are you saying according to white people? Where are the best chicken rolls in Cabra, full stop? :)

        • Because white people have bad taste.

When I go cannibal I prefer Azn.

    • At Hot Bread, it's $5 chicken rolls with drink.

  • I miss Banh Mi :-( Can't wait to be back in Vietnam in February!

I also curse living in this backward wasteland devoid of any ethnic food that is the Sunshine Coast.

  • Check the soft drink, I've gotten expired ones a couple times

  • Went to Destination Roll today, can tell you that the promotion has changed.

New promotion that started today $3 for all rolls (pork rolls, chicken rolls, steak rolls, meatball rolls etc). Which starts today and ends in 3 months time. So $3 rolls for 3 months. You may want to update the post OP.

    • Hi, the $3 is ongoing and always has been since they opened.

OP is correct where you buy a pork roll and you get a free drink. I walked past yesterday at 4pm. Unless they have changed today ?

      • When I went today there was a new sign which stated that it starts 20 October 2014 which is today. $3 for all rolls for 3 months one side in English other side of sign in Vietnamese.

Most likely they just changed it today, as I purchased one today at midday. Other days it's been a free drink with a roll purchase.

    • That's news to me. They had the $3 promotion when they first opened and had the drink offer yesterday.

I'll update the OP unless someone else can suggest otherwise.

After the salmonella incident years ago in Springvale (Victoria), they were nicknamed death rolls; cheap, yummy and to die for! =p

LOL I was actually a victim in that event, I don't remember much, but the court money did pay for my first car.

      • Wow.. That is a bargain! =p

      • +1

        What was your first car?

        • +1

2002 Integra DC5 Type R, it paid for most of it. It was also pretty good that money was earning interest, when the court was holding it.

        • @Kamui:

Nice! Court rates are indeed quite generous.

Was it easy to join the class action?

I was too young to know exactly what happened. All I know was that I was on the news or ACA. Not sure what happened in court. Pretty much Mum got one roll, me and my brother took a bite and the family ended up in hospital.

        • @Kamui:

Oh nasty. Glad you're OK now. :)

Best pork rolls in my opinion are from the bakery in canley vale. A wider selection of cold meats (cha) and BBQ chicken is good too.

But the best bread will have to go the bakery that watty and dannyboi mentioned.

I have in the past bought components from each of the places and built the pork rolls at home.

I sort of have an emotional attachment to different shops in cabra because I frequented a different one at different stage of life. Reminisce some times when I go back to the various bakeries.

    • They've got those crackling rolls out there, which is why pretty unique.

    • Agree with Nguyen's beside Richard on the Park in Canley Vale. Possibly not the cleanest as multiple times I've seen money drop into the food, but great selection and awesome bread. They have opened a second just a few meters away which seems just as good. Also Xcel Roll in Parramatta for a nontraditional one where you can mess with the fillings Subway-style.

  • We call it bread lol. Have no idea why they say it a roll. Any Vietnamese here guys? I'm from Vietnam :)

Thanks, now im hungry and its 1am

the next time you visit Cabramatta

    Ha! Good one.

    • Well, it's not something out of this ordinary if you live in Sydney and enjoy Asian shops and restaurant?

      • I live in Sydney and enjoy Asian stuffs, but I have never been to Cabra.

I can get to City or Chatswood without problem.

        • Then you're missing out ;)

        • Definitely worthwhile giving it a visit, especially on a weekend.

        • Make sure have patience as Cabramatta Parking will definitely test your patience on the road.

  • thanks..

  • +1

I still think Bankstown has better rolls, although i've eaten at literally nearly every asian bakery store possible..

  • I think hongha in mascot (next to the luggage shop) has the best rolls in sydney …so far from all the places I tried

  • Never thought a pork roll deal would pop up on here! :) making me hungry haha. Still admit Hong Ha is one of the best. Rolls are just something else.

  • +1

I have tasted Pho at most of the Cabramatta joints and this is my own honest opinion by value and how generous they can be. approxmately $10 for a small size which is more than enough for an average person.

Pho Ann (broth is very savourt, probably due to MSG, cheap and generous)
Pho Thanh Long (More natural, less MSG, not as generous but cheap)
Pho Phung (Used to be my favorite place, broth is awesome, very very generous fillings, very cheapwith pork leg fillings, until i found a used toothpick when i ordered sprintsprouts dipped in broth, i am sure every shop recycles their used beansprouts but at least make sure you clean properly)
Pho Tau bay (Very oily, they cook the broth for very long time which has more intense flavour but also more oil)
Pho 54 (Seems like they lost their touch, taste bland now)
Pho Viet (Tastes bland, less generous fillings and their small bowls cost $11)
Pho Huong Xua (Havent tried the new shop but old shop wasnt that great)

Most other restaurants specialize on all sorts of food so their pho isnt as great.

For Pork rolls, i always go to the Hughes street next to the carpark which is now $2.80. They were always generous and cheaper than most.
There is only one 24 hours on John st (Viet Hoa), and unfortuantley used to be the most famous one too, yet due to their fame and 24 hrs they rip u off and stingy on the fillings.

    • Which one in cabra has the crispiest bread? They all seem a bit too soft for my liking. The one on john st in the ally way seems the most crunchy.

The 24hr one is a bit average .

The one on Hughes st next to the small car park I find bread isn't crunchy.

      • It doesn't really matter about which one, it's more about WHEN you get there. You need to buy early in the mornings because that's when they bake the bread. Or if they're busy sometimes a new batch gets baked at about noon. Hope that helps!

        • OK thanks man, I suppose the one in mascot is always baking new bread then. Can't beat that place for crunch. But is too far for me.
